Monrogue's Wingman/Sidekick mod
on: February 07, 2014, 05:53:27 AM
Hey all,
I am excited to say I have performed my first multitool tool swap :D  I swapped the saw from my Sidekick with the scissors from my Wingman.  Nothing major I know, especially in comparison to the considerable modding skills I've seen by many others here.  I was surprised how easy it was for me to make the swap actually.  I'm by no means bragging, it's just that I'm not sure why, but I thought there would be more to it for some reason.  The tricky part for me was getting the right tightness/tension when putting the screw back in on each one.

I used my Charge TTi's bit driver and the bit extender.  I had two bits that fit the screws, so I used the bit extender to hold the back screw in place, and the TTi's driver to unscrew the front one.

I also swapped the washers as they seemed to be very slightly different in thickness.  I used the Explorer's can opener to pop them out and guide them into place.  Sorry, didn't get a pic of that...

Here is the end result with the tools involved in the job:

I am pleased with the result.  I now have the best combo of tools for my preference between the Wingman and Sidekick :tu:  I actually rather enjoyed the process, and can see how modding could be an addictive hobby if I had the equipment/knowledge to explore it more in depth.  Thanks for looking, and I can honestly say that I never would have thought of this or attempted it if it wasn't for this great forum :salute:

The Wingman has a combo edge blade, scissors and a package opener tool inside one of the handles.  The Sidekick has a plain edge blade, saw and a serrated blade inside one of the handles.  The other tools are the same between both models.  I preferred the Sidekick's setup overall except I wanted scissors instead of the saw.  So for me, the plain edge blade, scissors and serrated blade is the combo I find best for my use :tu:

Good work, sir!  :tu:  This will be a handy reference for anyone considering the same mod.

Thanks Spatha :salute: :D

Nice work. I like more of plain edge myself.
Does Leatherman use locktite on those screws?
Do you know if package opener would fit in place of can opener?

Thanks :salute:  They may have used locktite as there seemed to be some residue or something there, but I'm not familiar with it enough to know for sure.  The package opener appears to be the same thickness as the can opener, so I think it would work.  I actually thought about doing that as well, but changed my mind.  I figured have the main knife and a small serrated blade would be sufficient for anything I'd use the package opener on.  Not that I ever really use the can/bottle opener tool on my multitools, but I'd rather have it just in case.  Although now you have me thinking about doing it anyway just because...perhaps tomorrow night...I'll have to think about this

Ah, how I would love to get into that.  Unfortunately that requires equipment, space and more extensive knowledge.  This mod was far simpler than any of that, at least from what I gather from detailed modding experiences I've read here.  That is definitely a hobby I could see myself really enjoying though :tu:  Maybe someday :dd:

Thanks Derek :salute:  I'm not really sure what to call it.  I was trying to think of that earlier.  I don't want to just keep calling it my modded Sidekick, but I don't feel that I can simply call it a Sidekick due to swapping out a major feature of the MT.  Since it's the body of the Sidekick and says "Sidekick" on it, I don't think I can change that name really.  How about, "Sidekick-X"?  I kinda like that actually :tu:  Like how there's a Swisstool X.

That has a nice ring to it also :tu:  Perhaps if I were to mod a multitool more extensively....but I think the Wingman/Sidekick models are about my level at this point ;)

I do, but only a sidekick. I would love to replace the file with one that can actually, you know file things.

I know what you mean.  I was thinking about replacing the file with the package opener from the Wingman, but as I stated in another post, it would just seem redundant to have both the package opener and small serrated blade.  However, I would probably get more use out of that setup than keeping that file.  I just like that it has a screwdriver tip and could be used for some light prying I suppose   I don't know though.

I would love to have a file, even the size is okay by me but the fact that it is only cut one way(not sure of the actual term) and quite aggressively it tends to just push stuff off to the side instead of taking any material off.

Yeah, it's not a very effective file from what I can tell, and the ruler on the other side isn't much either.  A regular file with diamond coating on one side would be much better, even if it had to be the same smaller size.  This makes me wish I had a spare Wave/Charge file to try to shape to fit in there

Great mod there Monrogue!  :D  What's the point of having tools if you can't have them do what you need them to do.  :tu:

Thanks buddy :salute:  I know, the more I think about it, the more I'm considering swapping that file out for the package opener.  It just would make it seem like almost the entire tool is devoted to cutting various things in various ways.  Might not be a bad thing though

I've gotten so much use out of the clamshell opener. My wife even comes to me to borrow it on occasion. If I were you, I'd definitely swap that out.

Maybe we could get a regular hand file and cut that down and shape it to fit? If you decide to do anything about it make sure you keep us informed :salute:

It's tempting man....I almost want to do it just for the fun of it.  I rather enjoyed the process of swapping the saw/scissors out.

Possibly.  I lack any equipment for cutting/shaping metal, so I wouldn't be able to do much of anything like that.

the screwdriver tip is the only part of that file that's even moderately useful. :-\

Thanks Breezy :salute:  That's what I'm really thinking, so I'm considering swapping it out with the package opener even more now.  I just don't want it to seem like overkill with the cutting implements, but I would likely still get more use out of that setup instead of the file.
