Automatic Knife Thread
on: March 03, 2014, 03:27:16 AM
We have so many threads about different types of knives.  Slip joints, folders, etc.  I thought it was time for an Automatic Knife thread.  Where I live I can own an auto knife, but I can only carry one when hunting or fishing.

I would love to tell you that I used it hard.

But I picked it up that way I've been meaning to send it in and buy a new blade but it's a bit of a pain in the butt since I need to have a dealer send it in for me.

Which model is that? How's it treating you? I've had lackluster experiences with most of my Gerber knives

The first one is a gerber emerson alliance. The other is a propel downrange. I have benchmade and microtech autos also. Honestly i like my gerber autos better. I have several 06 autos that was used in iraq and they still work perfectly!

Not sure if this fits here or not...but I was a bit surprised to have found this in a local store in Canada.

This little knife cost me only 12 dollars, and is a Gerber Vallotton. It features a 2.6" blade with a F.A.S.T system incorporated in the blade. Basically, move the slider switch and with the gentlest of a nudge, the blade opens swiftly. The slider has a locking position which is activated imediately after the blade deploys. To close it, simply move the switch back to disengage and close the knife. This assisted opening knife may not fit here, but it is about as auto as one can get and still be probably street legal in Canada.

Ya that gerber by the sounds of it qualifies as an auto which are prohibited weapons in Canada.  Unless its by a technicality since its a slider and not a button?  I doubt anyone really cares who sells them though.

I never understood why ballisongs were prohibited here as well.  They take much longer to open than any flick open benchmade like the griptilian, and fixes blades which are legal can do much more damage.

I have a Gerber f.a.s.t 3in that I use for my work knife. So far as I know it is classed as an assisted opening. And I wonder about the ballisongs too, wish we could.get them. Got a buddy living the and I want him to bring me one so badly.

That is true. The one I posted, you couldn't flick open or gravity open...so I guess by Canadian laws, it is legal.

I know other knifemakers in Cananda who have been sent balisongs as gifts from US members who didnt know they were banned here.  Some arrived fine, others confiscated.  One guy in my town (he may have already had a record dont know) ordered brass knuckles online and when he got them here, got a visit by the cops who confiscated them.  That was weird one to me as how would then have known.

WHen I was a kid I bought some blowguns from a hunting catalog.  They came from the US no problem.  My dad found them though and got rid of them since yep they are prohibited too.  I had no idea or way of knowing that, they just just looked cool and I was 12.

Assisted opener knives are fine, I have a couple of those. I think I still prefer easy flick open knives for one hand use though.  The griptilian is my favorite and flicks open no problem.

I know that when it comes to anything relating to the cbsa it is kinda bit and miss, it depends on the mood of whoever is running the scanner. As far as my buddy goes, I don't want to get my buddy in any crap so I'll just forgo the ballisong for now.

I've been wanting one of those orange paratrooper switchblades for a while. I really like the looks of it. One was even listed here cheaply. Problem is, one place I read says both carry and possession in Virginia is illegal, the other says only carry is.

Sometimes, I wish I lived in West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, or North Carolina.  Those states have less stringent switchblade laws,
