Currently I'm experimenting a bit with the anodize of original alox scales. Here are a few of my recent work.

First four knives with old cross scales in different blue. At last, the blue from one side to the other darker but that is difficult to photograph.

And all four together:

And first try anodizing two color:

With a little color roll the black applied, then dipped into red color tank.

Red and blue:

And this has the Kingfisher colors:

The multicolored together:

And all together:

Wow, Peter! :o

Those look very good. :tu:

I think they deserve a separate thread so you can tell us in more detail how you made them. :pok:

Wow neat stuff for sure, thanks for posting!

Did you already have anodizing gear for other purpose or just set it up for SAK work?  Today is my day to get my Ti anodizing gear setup, but doing Al anodizing seems more involved with nastier chemicals.  You need sulfuric acid I think?

No, I fear that large postings with lots of information drown in the flood of comments and babblings. I anodized according to the usual procedures.

1 sodium hydroxide bath to remove the old anodized layer
2 aluminum cleaning bath.
3 annodize bath (in sulfuric acid and under current)
4 dyebath
5 sealing bath (cooking)

Who wants to anodize should inform themselves properly. There are many sources of information on the web. The process is complex, you have to consider many things.

Thank you!  :) I learned specially for my passion of alox-SAK aluminum to anodized. Yes the anodizing bath works with sulfuric acid.

I wish you good results with your Ti anodizing work.  :tu:

Ya Ti anodizing is easy compared to Al anodizing.  I dont have to calculate current and surface area etc.  Im happy letting the professionals do the hard anodize for me on Al, but Ti anodize is very easy to do at home.

Looking forward to your future mods.

And I like that you're doing it on the Solo platform. I feel it's a very unjustly unappreciated model that I personally like very much. The strongest snap, very low profile but you get that great 93mm blade.

Some time ago I decided to do a custom alox knife for me!

Starting point was a used sailor:

I extended it with an opener layer, a metal saw and a scissor (I used an old scissor backspring for this mod).

I was to lazy for special liners. So you might see one original brass liner and several original alu ones. I heard a lot about the heavy work needed for custom liners. I avoided this. (Maybe in the future)

The scales are very used. As this knife will be a user, I don't care about this. (Seeing the custom anodizing above maked me think, though)

However, I talked too much. ;-)

The Result is my 'Sea Ranger'

:tu:  Good to see more Wenger scissors making their way into 84mm knives.

Also, great job on the Phillips. It looks like it is meant to be there, and that's as good as it gets.

So many awesome mods here... Congrats, folks.

I'm actually tempted to do my first mod soon... Vic Recruit with the saw layer added (taken from "My First Vic Plus"), with the white scales. 84mm, three layers without any backside tools... Unique SAK

Yes, Glofindel, very nice incorporation of back tools into the ALOX frame. I see you added liners, for the hidden rivet, right? And to help compensate the thickness of the phillips.

Excellent looking mod, Henry. And I'm a big fan of the Ranger in general. :tu:

Absolutely, I flat the top portion of Phillip to reduce the thickness and roundness of it so it has nice and look to Alox scale.

I just noticed you did that and it looks very nice.  The thin cadet scales are tough to work with for backtools.

Yep, drilled the tails off the rivets, removed the saw layer and had enough length left in the rivets to peen it up again as a Pioneer.

The saw layer went into a spare Electrician I had along with swapping the elec blade for a pruner blade I had in my spares box to make a Harvester

I have used a piece of thin leather or plastic with a hole in it to protect the scales usually. Silver Alox you can get away with a few light hits without it showing but Vic's colour anodizing it fairly delicate.
