Have you tried sparking the rod yet? It wouldn't be my first or even second choice of firelighter but in an emergency it'll do the job.
So I need to wait until Autumn, throw it out the window and see if I can find it again? OK.

If the knife has the metal saw/file you could strike the end of the rod on it like a match...I've tried that with welding striker flints.
There's a plan I've not tried it on the metal file. Didn't work on a Classic nail file though.
