My contribution - the Leatherman Bantam.

I like the look and feel of this mod, but I don't love the drivers, package opener, etc.  Besides, I encounter more beer bottles than loose screws.

I like it.  :tu:

Silly wingmen and sidekicks. How about a surge???

I'll drill out the pivot holes on the Phillips and small flathead after I get some sleep.  >:D
I like this one. I don't need pliers, but would very much like to have a folder with blade exchanger.

So here is my question:
Is there enough room to have the bit-holder with bit-extender in there?
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

The end of the bit extender is too wide.

Thats what I thought after looking at images again and realizing that its probably not wider than a Wave. Thanks for the info though.

I think I will have to slaughter my unloved Wave for some experimenting... >:D

Going of this picture by Kampfer it looks like the Sidekick tang for the outside tool is pretty similar to the one from the Wave.

Can someone tell me if they are the same size? Outside diameter like in the image below.

(Image removed from quote.)

They are pretty much identical width. However, the tool 'stop' cutout at the top is deeper on Wave/Charge blades. This means that when you open the blade/tool completely, it will extend past the straight line and will point a little upwards. I tested this on my S-Wingman with the spare Wave PE blade and while it fitted width and thickness wise, it didn't work for me as my OCD prevented me from having blade opened in upward facing direction, rather than straight line. Oh and there's the issue with the shim/spacer as the Wave/Charge blades come with 7/32" (5.5mm) hole and the Wingman pivots are all 3/16" (4.75mm).

OCD is a bitch...Wave blade mod will work for some but for us affected with the disorder, it wont  :(

Thanks, I also noticed that the flat at the back is slightly at an angle with the Wingman...

Anyways, I intended to add a unrelated tool (scalpel), but it doesn't have enough metal, so I was hoping that the Wingman/Sidekick would be smaller and it would therefore be a better fit...

I must confess, that yes, it does. It doesn't give me what I'd want from a tool (the wrong things lock), but seeing as I bought a Wingman ages ago just for the scissors, I suppose it gives me a project to build and trade away to get some value back rather than just chucking it in a drawer

SO need a $18 Sidekick so I can make one of these when I get home. Or make Kampfer do it.

Could not wait till the end of the thread to reply so there will be more to add I bet.

Well done everyone.

Edit: Good news I got through the thread.

Bad news is they are still on sale at Home Depot.

I bought another wingman just for this, one question, will the wingman scissors work with this mod or does it have to be the sidekick scissors.

No, Wingman scissors won't work, sorry. Not without some great re-arrangement at the loss of other tools, plus you will have to deal with the pivot hole diameter differences.

Kick, Wave & Charge scissors are a great fit for this mod.

You could use the wingman scissors with their handle, outside opening scissors vs knife and pocket clip.

You'll loose a knife as you pointed out...not sure if this was Jymkym's intention, though.

The pivot holes on Wingman scissors are OK as both top and bottom pivots are of same diameter. I wrote that first reply while playing with a pair of Surge's scissors in my hands  ;)

Could a regular blade off a fuse/kick mount up on the inside? If he really wanted to have outside scissors

I've never tore apart a wingman.

But I do want to try this with a Wave....

I'm not sure the scales will allow it though

The Wingman and Sidekick have the same sized fastener at both ends.
The Wave has a larger fastener at the plier end.
You'll have to enlarge the pivot holes for the tools for them to fit at the plier end.

keep in mind that the pivot on the plier end of a Wave handle is larger than the pivot at the other end, so you'll be limited on your tool selection. I'm not sure if there's enough metal around the pivot of the Wave's internal tools to enlarge the pivot hole to accommodate the larger pivot of the plier end.

EDIT: zoidberg beat me to it, and said it more eloquently than I did.

Yeah I'm ready for that. I'm not sure how many tools I would add though to the larger pin amyway?

Either way, I'll make a thread when I disassemble it and we can brainstorm. Any leftover parts can be sent out, for example; I'm definetly not keeping scissors.

And you will need to find a way to have tools on the pliers end of handle to click in; on WM/SK there is a spring to retain the pliers head, which I used to secure the tools, But on Wave it is different.

Hmm, not sure who's silly here...I'd never do that to a Surge   :twak:

The idea was to create a small and affordable $25-30 multitool folder, not the $100 franken. But be my guest.  8)

That surge has been in pieces for a few years already. And I'm sure I'm not the only one here with donor surges and waves laying around.

Ask this guy how he did it with his Surge

After reading this thread some, i realized that this thread is proof that custom multis could be a goldmine for companies if they did it. The single wing wingman seems to be a very popular mod, but yet very personal. Different configurations and personalities all done with roughly the same tools. Imagine being able to order it factory that way "Hey Leatherman :pok: " but it really is amazing to see the creativity you all have done with  these tools. great job  :salute:

I haven't had time to read the entire thread so apologies if already mentioned.

I think it should be called "little wing" like the beautiful Jimi Hendrix song (also well covered by Stevie Ray Vaughn)

So here's my version. I did it slightly different. In order to make the drivers "click" into place, I simply modified the handle to accept the stop clip thing that the bits fit into. This doesn't leave room for scissors, but since I don't have any anyway, it doesn't matter to me.

You can see one of the slots I had to cut for the catch to fit in place. There is another on the other side.

Also had to cut a section out here for the spring part of the clip to move into.

I tried fitting the Wingman scissors in as well, and while I got them to fit, they didn't really work properly and made the tools on that end very difficult to open. They also wouldn't fit with the clip piece in like I finished it with. Overall I'm very happy with it though.
