Silly wingmen and sidekicks. How about a surge???

Hmm, not sure who's silly here...I'd never do that to a Surge   :twak:

The idea was to create a small and affordable $25-30 multitool folder, not the $100 franken. But be my guest.  8)

That surge has been in pieces for a few years already. And I'm sure I'm not the only one here with donor surges and waves laying around.

I know my OCD is going to go off the scale with this thing, arghh.
How mission impossible would it be getting the tools clicking in at both ends?

Don't go OCD mad with this one matey, this was supposed to be fun and simple mod. Wingman/Sidekick handle design doesn't allow click on both ends and you loose a bit of integhrity by removing the pliers head stop but it all works and fits well. My bottom tools lock and top ones don't but having used this tool for close to a month on a daily basis I can attest the non-clicky tools don't bother me at all as they extend fully and I'm usually careful when operating those two drivers anyway.

Nice one jaffer man.  :tu:
I might be up your way in a few weeks, we should get a beer.

Cool, we will be most likely gone camping somewhere up Tongariro but let me know when you're up in Auckland, who knows.

Lanyard ring is stock from sidekick (wingman lacks it), I ended up replacing it with a washer.
In my current configuration, three out of four tools clicks, except the can opener.

Why does the file click but not the opener?
Good question, maybe because the file is placed directly next to the handle wall?
It clicks but not a strong click like the other drivers. Good enough for me using it as fine flat driver. Can opener doesn't click but works fine, tried it, passed.

Yes, you can make it sort of a quasi-click by using thinner washer on the side of a driver facing the handle wall, so when you open/extend the driver the bent top edge of the side wall will 'hug' over the bottom of the driver, but that only results in a half-arsed solution as although there's the 'click' there's still quite a bit of a play and driver moves about 10-15 degrees.
That's why I called it quasi, it kind of works but it won't satisfy those OCD fellas among us ;)

Buying a $20 MT and spent all night modding it, it is like playing with Lego but cheaper and more fun.

Thanks mate, they should have stuck to it and produce the actual retail version, IMO.
From that photo it appears to be a bit top-heavy but I'm sure those tools could be re-arranged for a more balanced load.

Interesting... so "they" have had thoughts along this line.

But frankly I think the Wingman version both looks better and is a more practical size.

Very nice mods, folks! Leatherman really, REALLY needs to produce these. Using the WM/SK platform would make so much sense, also. It's an existing platform so their would be very little development related costs. It has a pocket clip. The shape of the handle makes it ergo-friendly.

So much potential. Somebody needs to post this to Leatherman's Facebook page. I tried earlier but the restrictions on Government computers will not allow it.

It looks surprisingly nice. I prefer the Surge versin but with 2 different AAKs made from these, to keep the serrated blade and scissors on the second mod.
