Anybody ever heard of this?

http://bushcraftusa.com/forum/threads/anyone-ever-got-a-bad-mora.177961/

Personally never had any probs like this but then,#1, I'm not really a power user and #2,  I always, as a matter of course, put a nice microbevel on mine right out of the pkg.  Years later I read that many wood workers do this as well because an RC60 zero grind edge can chip pretty easily.

The soft steel thing is separate issue and is new to me.

Thoughts?

Considering that the edge angle on a Mora is really acute it could also mean that the steel was burned or the HT went during the sharpening. Quite frankly it would have been interesting to test that knife and see how far up the issue goes

I have never had those problems with any of my Moras.

Mora do have a warranty service, but I have never used it.

It was really surprising that the Bushcraft Black was mentioned so many times!  That was their flagship model in carbon!  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

Actually Mora has a harder time with the HT on their carbon knives than on stainless steel knives, that's why the Garberg is in stainless. Something about tampering the tang and warping from what I recall.

As far as should it happen, Moras aren't that expensive and they offer a very good product. Sadly it's easier to poopoo on them because inexpensive and cheap have become synonyms. I remember some very prominent companies having issues with the edge as well and their fans jumped like rabid raccoons. Hell I've personally had an issue with one carbon steel knife that has a price tag of around $120 from a beloved company and according to some people I'm an idiot for using the knife to cut things (to be fair, I've already pissed them off by not drooling over a representative that was old enough to be my mother while I was engaged)

I find it interesting that it seems like none of the complainers have tried to contact Mora about it.
I can understand that its not worth the hassle if it was a $6 knife. But the Bushcraft Black cost enough to be worth contacting them.
Also I dont get this whole throw it in the thrash mentality. I have chipped and ruined edges on cheap moras, but then it was because I abused it. I still would not throw it away. It can get a quick and dirty new edge on a grinder, or be used as a scrape or to cut  roots and so on.
But then again my wife thinks I collect to many things that should have been thrown away. :D

I've got a test knife that could be pictured for the definition of abuse. At some point the edge on it had broken like a piece on tin due to my voodoo with edge angles. Took a while to fix it with a plain ol' sharpening stone but it's still here and still doing quite well for all the dumbass things I'm willing to test out, even after I've had a few too many.

Yeah, I don't understand any of it either.   I remember my B Blk came with a tiny micro bevel on it to begin with.  It was sharp right out of the pkg but just a few freehand licks on my DC-4 ceramic side and it would shave!  I will try to use it to cut some curls on my std test stick...it's Pecan and it's hard as hell. I'll report back.

You guys are batting a thousand!! :2tu:  I peeled off lots of bark and thin curls before I cut deeper...the wind was blowing and blew most of the shavings off the bench.

The wood:

Pecan
"Comments: Pecan has slightly lower strength values than some of the other species of Hickory, but it is still among the hardest and strongest of woods native to the United States. The wood is commonly used where strength or shock-resistance is important. As the common name implies, Carya illinoinensis is the tree responsible for producing Pecan nuts commonly used in snacks and cooking recipes, and is the state tree of Texas."
http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-identification/hardwoods/pecan/

Through the knot.

This Pecan stick is dry and hard. I had to really put my weight behind the knife to cut the deeper curls.....I couldn't see or feel any edge damage, even after pushing through the knot.  It would still slice the skin on my thumb which is one way I test sharpness. Not a razor like the rest of the blade but still sharp.

Just a short test to see if my blade had any of the problems mentioned elsewhere. It passed easily.

My faith in Mora quality is unfazed!

Ok thanks.

Although I don't really have a huge use for one, that I know of yet  ;) but they look cool, and I don't have a neck knife. I'd like to get my hands on one first in a shop probably. Looks like a cool little guy to just keep in a pack(s).
