New CRKT tool - the Bivy!
on: July 30, 2015, 12:50:03 AM
Just got this in my email a little bit ago - http://www.crkt.com/bivy-rigging-multitool-9250

Looks like a Sog Switchplier, but there's something else about it too. Can't wait to see one in person..

The clip is on the wrong side

That and they ruined it with a Tanto blade.

Pertaining to the clip. It makes you wonder what the designers where thinking or lack of thought went into it.

After looking it appears it had to be on that side since there is a button for the pliers on the other side. I'm willing to bet everything could of been arranged to have the button on the one side and the clip in relation to the blade oriented correctly though.

Looks decent...but kind of cheap. Hopefully they release a video of actual usage.

Looks cool. I just hope they don't skimp on the quality control. The way they execute will be what makes or breaks it - just like anything, really. This could be terrible like the PowerDuo or awesome like the SwitchPlier2. I like that it has a tanto blade - something different.

It looks to me very much like the old Meyerco Paradox designed by Blackie Collins.

I'm looking forward to playing with this one.

It's a shame they didn't go with all one hand open tools like the old buck xtract.

Yes it reminds me of the X-TRACT too. I would be curious how the pliers compare to the X-Tract. I prefer the screw driver set up on the X-Tract.

Quite a few confusing aspects here....

The lanyard hole is next to the pliers, and could interfere with them

Open or closed, the button on the side is in the central position

The scales are cut away for a thumb stud on front and rear, but only one thumb stud to worry about

Clip is in a weird place

The open part of the pliers handle looks very uncomfortable, and where the plat part is, it's cut away so deeply as to be almost three pieces

Serrations appear to be ground both sides (no flat side)

Based on how CRKT don't tend to let images loose until the item has hit production, I feel fairly confident this isn't just a work in progress, and there's a few rather odd things about this tool

Woah, did I get this right, its heavier than a Spirit? And almost the same length... Can't wait for a side-by-side comparison :pok: :pok: :pok:
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Thanks for that clip, it answers several of my queries:

The lanyard hole is at the same end as the pliers, but no risk of interference. That said, it still might be in the way for use.

Central button makes more sense now  :tu:

Knife seems conventionally ground for a combo edge (one side only)

Would I get one? No! The thing I like abot the Switchplier is ease of modification, and more specifically, I can make it knifeless. I do like carrying a seperate knife to my multitool.

The pliers look less comfortable than a switchplier, and the supporting tools will be rather limited for some, especially considering the size and weight of the tool. I don't see the Switchplier has anything to fear. I think the Switchplier is more comfortable, more versatile, and lighter.

Once again, CRKT have shown that multitool design isn't their greatest strength. They make some excellent value knives, of which I own several (they're one of the first companies I look to if I want a new pocket knife), but I'm still yet to be fully convinced by any of their multitools. They do have some nice ideas, but somehow those ideas transpire as gadgetty novelties rather than a trustworthy tool you'd want as EDC.

Yep, repost, I called it.

Thank you, MTo moderator for merching with the relevant thread!  :tu:

I expect the same. Nonetheless, seeing an auto-pliers from another company seems to validate the overall design. And the use of one button for several tasks is quite ingenious, imo.

But it seems rather heavy for a climbing tool, compared to the other Hans Florine offerings. As you said, more gadgetry than practical.

It is very heavy for a MT with only knife pliers and drivers.

The clip is on the wrong side! Unforgivable.

Thanks for the info zoidberg I had not noticed that when I first viewed the link. I too think the tool is not as efficient as I would like. And the Tanto is a negative for me.

An article the truth about knives did on the designer of the multitool in question as well as 2 knives. I should point out he designed these tools to be light and small which this on is most assuredly not.

I'd missed this thread earlier.  It looks....errr....ummm....interesting.  I suspect that within the confines of what the designer does, i.e. rope work, then it mostly makes sense.  However as a more general MT then it definitely feels somewhat lacking.
