It does set the scene for a serine winter time story!

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

I really like this one but am ever so slightly worried that if I were to actually carry it the paint would rub off very quickly... I'm not sure if anyone here's had any experience with that but I'd be curious to know.

They're characterful scales @Tuisto. I think with EDC the paint would wear and I generally carry a SAK in a cloth sleeve to prevent pocket rash because the scales are relatively soft and liable to scratching whether painted or not.

But every now and then even a Shelf Queen can get a careful outing

Hey Fast Bill, is there any way I could request a photo of your cloth sleeve, please? I use a type of cloth sleeve for my Swisschamp; it's really just an old iPod sock. It goes into the sleeve, into my left pocket, affixed to my belt by the Victorinox belt hanger. Here's a photo of it (with a Spartan, to keep in line with Spartan Saturday, haha).

Here's a few I have made. Hand sewn and cut from any old T-shirt cloth handy.

I try make them a little longer so that they don't slide out too easily. Also good for wiping gunk off the tools if you need.

L-R: 111mm, Spartan and Climber. For comparison a commercially bought sleeve with my Silvertech Spartan. It has a cord closure which doesn't actually make a diference.

One day I'll learn to machine sew them but for now it amuses me to hand sew.

Thanks guys, I do think they also save the tools from collecting too much pocket lint and debris. Neat and tidy

Awesome pouches and a great idea to reuse shirts. I honestly think yours are more functional than the pull-string ones because it takes too much time to open those and (for me) the strings get caught on the ~8,000 other things in my pocket...

I used the finger from a leather glove for my Mini Champ for awhile.  I agree with you Phil.  It keeps lint and dirt out of the works and saves the scales.

Maybe I'll make one from scratch a take a few pics to post.

Note that for the mouth of the pouch I tend to use a hemmed seam which gives the opening a bit of long term strength. I have made them from thin cotton but I think T-shirt material is kindest on scales and holds a SAK fairly well. Thinner cotton tends to slip off too easily.

I tend to add about an inch of material length to each pouch so that it can be rolled over but in practice it just allows the SAK to site deeper in the pouch.

Just a meat and potatoes type of Spartan. Economy nylon scales. Former owner only knew how to pry things with all the blades. Best wishes. G

Spartan Saturday here in plain old northern Indiana.   I appreciate simple meat and potatoes as well.
Unfortunately the price of meat, puts the emphasis more on the potatoes now a days! 🥺

Nothing much really beats a simple SPARTAN in your pocket, whether old or new!

Strange how the older ones have so much more character, even with tools bent from being misused.

Like these falls in the background, the SPARTAN is just a thing of beauty😘

If those guys are meat and potatoes, perhaps this one's meat and sweet potatoes? Something like that?

Since we have been doing scale swaps lately, I might mention that I intended doing a scale swap on the Eco Spartan.  It was filthy dirty and I gave it the hot water and Dawn bath.  Then I took a Vic can opener blade and did a test pry on the nylon scales.  Couldn't get a single opening.  I decided that the scales were likely securely glued to the frame.  I have taken off nylon scales before, but these felt like they would C-R-A-A-A-A-C-K if I applied sufficient horsepower to lift them.  They are in good condition actually.  Just missing the stamped on cross and shield (which always wears off).
Why would someone buy the cheap Spartans when the top shelf ones with nice Cellidor and inlaid emblem are inexpensive.  I remember reading where someone decided to buy the Eco model because it only cost 60% of the asking price of the standard item.  I think these things appealed to someone who wanted a good knife, but didn't want to waste his coin.  Mostly they were tourist impulse buy items, or so I heard.  Bob and Gertie go to Switzerland.  See the knives at a gift shop.  The dull red ones are cheap, so they buy them for the friends, neighbors, and in laws.  Some of them went as advertiser items, or company gifts.  Lower cost if you intend to give them away.  9-11 ended the buying a knife at the airport idea and Wenger and Victorinox both felt the strain.  Greatly.  It caused a big shake-up at both companies and added a big rusty nail in the Wenger coffin.
Best wishes,
Gary

I agree with you Gary.  Some parent not wanting to spend the full boat on Tommy's new knife so viola!  Evo scales!

My Dad picked up my Huntsman at the Wichita airport.  After 9-11, both companies took a big hit sales wise.

Honestly, Vic made more money off me as a result. I kept getting knives taken away at airport security because I have them stuffed into every nook and cranny of any bag I'm currently using. And I'd just get so upset I'd buy two of whatever model was just taken from me. I've had no fewer than 20 taken at airport security over the years. I once told Julia I feel like the hydra — airport security takes one, and two more sprout up...
