My new to me Opinel
on: September 27, 2015, 10:08:17 PM
I sent my only Opinel to a member and have been wanting one again.  I picked this No 8 up today which was sitting at the bottom of a box.  I'll give it a light cleaning and then sharpen the heck out of it.  Pretty stoked I have an Opinel again.

Cleaned up nice.  Didn't do too much other than lightly sand some rust and give the handle a good scrub.  I did make a modification to the locking collar tho.  The knife didn't lock in the closed position so I had to grind a bit on the lower end of the collar.  I'll grind just a tad bit more but it does lock close now.

Sharpened to 20 degree on both sides which produced a wicked edge.  I used my Lansky which made short work of the blade.  You can see the edge picking up the light in the pic.

Lightly scrubbed the handle with 0000 steel wool and warm soapy water.  I was careful to not overly wet the wood.  Blade got cleaned the same way however I used 1000 grit sand paper to take some rust off.  I'm not doing anything else to it as it's a simple knife which looks great as is.

Nice one Aloha - are you gonna put a lanyard hole in yours?

They are such a great knife, and the virobloc is a brilliant locking system IMO.

Good job polishing it up. Don't give this one away!

You'd be hard pressed to find a better knife for the money than an Opinel.  I have been a big fan of theirs for years.  In fact, here's a little known MTO fact for you, one of the ideas I had when I was trying to decide what my next project would be was to recreate a SOSAKOnline (predecessor to Swiss Army Knights for those who don't know!) type organization dedicated to Opinels.

In the end I wasn't sure how much interest there would be in a singular brand and I decided to go with the much broader marketability of multitools.

Nothing cuts like the high carbon Opinel blade.

I've always wondered about Opinels. They seem well loved and appear in lots of EDCs...but I always thought they would be way to lumpy in the pocket (keeping in mind that I've never put hands on one). Have you guys found that to be the case? Like the old schoolness of them and seem like they would be a pleasure to use.

And for some reason I'd prefer a well used one to a shiny new one...not really sure why. Nice job!

Get a No.7 and a waistcoat. Mine fits perfectly in m'waistcoat pocket and it makes me look spiffy.

@Boss, now that is some very interesting MTO info about this site possibly being a whole different thing.

@magentus, I dont know if I'll add a lanyard hole.  I carried my last opinel next to my wallet ( left front pocket ) so it stood up as a result.  Carrying it that way made it easy to retrieve.

I agree the locking system is brilliantly simple and effective.  Heck the knifes design in general is brilliant.

@tommywp, I had a #6 prior to this and for me the round shape actually lent itself to a comfortable carry.  I dont wear fitted pants so its great in my pocket.  The #8 I have is about a thick as an Explorer but longer.  The round shape however feels better in pocket IMO.

Great find man. Nice work on the clean up too, would not have though that was the same knife.

Been meaning to pick up a Opie for a long time but never got around to it. Could by 20 or so Opie's for the cost of one of my good Mollies but still have not, weird.

Thanks, It's a neat knife no question.  I used my previous one just as I would a pairing knife.  Certainly not a hard use knife but will put in a hard days work.

Today, I impulse bought my first Opinel knife, the No. 6 for $10 at a local department store chain that just so happens to have a great knife selection. It was originally going straight into the collection, but with the light weight, razor sharp blade and ambidextrous locking mechanism, it's going into my carry rotation.   Like Mora, they're a great knife for not a whole lot of money.   I may be buying another No. 6 for the reason I intended to buy the knife in the first place, and probably more for gifts.

Great find! Is there a place that shows the variation of tang stamps and handle prints over the years?

@cody  I looked briefly but didn't immediately find any info for blade/tang stamp history.
