Finally got the chance to have a hands on look at one of these in a shop.  First impressions were good (ish).  I liked the size and weight, the blade and saw were also good.  Still not a fan of modern Leatherman ergonomic on the handle spread when in pliers mode, but it's not as bad as some.  The diamond stone is....fine, I guess.  At least it's easy enough to remove and use, unlike the whistle.

I'm sorry to say but my thoughts on the whistle haven't changed; it's not even slightly practical and there's no way it's a substitute for a proper whistle and fire starter.  First off it's far too fiddly to remove, tricky enough in a nice warm shop, I'd hate to have to try and access it when I'm cold, wet and in trouble.  I'm not inspired by the feel of the plastic either.  As a ferro rod it's also definitely on the small side, you'd still need to remove it from the main tool as you need to get the rod right down into your tinder so having it sitting half way up on the side of the Signal isn't ideal.  I'd never carry this alone and think myself prepared for an emergency.  I'd genuinely worry about the safety of someone who did.

The whistle is only one aspect of this tool though and, much as I don't like it, it doesn't make the rest of the tool bad.  I can't see myself buying one, but I understand you folks who like it enough to own it. :)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Thanks for your thoughts Gareth :salute:  It's always interesting to hear others' views on a tool.  I agree about the plastic bits.  However, I don't have it as an emergency survival tool myself.  Much like you, I would likely carry another MT with it if I were going out in the woods or some area where survival would be in question (not likely for me at least).

It would have been neat to see a ferro rod attached like the MUT punch tool ( screwed in ).  That would have been much better IMO.  "Survival tool"  naw, I still don't see it either.  A whistle, ferro rod, and saw are all great items to have when outdoors but I think we all know on the Signal its salesmanship.

I think the tool is a lot neater than I probably originally thought it would be.  Glad you got to handle one.

What are your initial thoughts on the tool? I think it is a cool tool and pretty underrated.

Thanks all, Ive actually had it for about a month or so and just have not posted it here. Overall I would say it is pretty good. Not worth 100 dollars to me, but I got it NIB for 75. When I first got it it was covered in dust (probably sitting in the cardboard box on the shelves for so long), so I cleaned it up and oiled it and it was still a little rough, but it has broken in somewhat now and is much better. The sharpener and fire steel/whistle aren't the best at all, but better than nothing if you weren't planning on being stranded. I would have liked to see a pair of scissors somewhere but its no big deal to carry a classic. The fact that you cant close the tool all the way to use the bit driver kind of sucks, but it would be OK in a pinch or if you prefer to screw with the tool open. I would have honestly liked to have seen either a fully serrated blade or a fully plain blade, but some people only carry one knife/tool, so again, both sides of the combination edge work when you need them to. Pliers and saw are great of course. Tool is very carry able, surprisingly so actually. It has an awl, which is awlsome! And one way to get around the bit driver issues is to just use the hex head if you carry standard bits. I think the hammer was a nice edition. Yeah you could just use a rock, but if you are going to put a carabiner why not put the extra space to use?

Overall, I like it more than I thought I would and would and do carry it outdoors, but there are a lot of compromises that might just be deal-breakers for some folks.

Thanks for the thoughts on it gdoolittle  I am seeing a pattern of similar likes and dislikes throughout most of what people say about this tool and I guess for what it is (technically a scaled up Skeletool) then it probably excels but if you look at it as a scaled down Wave then it may not shine as much  I do  :like: the idea of this tool and will probably get one, especially if I can get one in my price range ;)  :like:

Looked back at that and wow my grammar was rough  thats what happens when you use your phone's keyboard so much. Poncho you've been talking about wanting one for a while. My plan if I didn't like the tool when I got it was to offer to sell it to you! Turns out I like it a lot more than I expected. I will keep my eye out for good prices around here though and let you know if I see one on sale!

G'Day Mate,

You touch on some good points here. I have been carrying it now for two weeks as part of my Signal challenge. It has surprised me too in how good a tool it is. I have to agree, it needs to be at a cheaper price point - but that is not a discussion for this thread. The hex hole has surprised me the most. Initially I could see some usefulness, but not as a camper or a hiking situation. I have used it quite a bit and you can put a surprising amount of torque through it.

On the scissors, a Wave scissors will fit inside, but you need to do some modification to get the bit driver to close properly. There is a small metal tab that must be filed away before it will close properly. Some folks have added a Wingman scissors where the saw goes too. The blade is quite good, but I prefer a PE blade. Once the challenge is finished, I will add a Wave blade to it to see it it will be better for MY needs.

I like it a lot too.

Cheers,

Pete

The Wave scissors was just a test. I have not finished it yet.

And yes, SAK scissors will be superior to the Wave one, but I prefer to keep to one marque when I do the mods.  ;)

could the wave scissors fit where the spare washer next to the awl and bottom of knife is? was thinking of doing this myself.
