What's your dream Truck/4x4?
on: January 08, 2016, 01:28:05 PM
So what's your dream 4x4 rig?  Is it a Jeep, stock or modified?  A big truck, or luxury SUV?

My dream truck might seem odd to some, but it's a vehicle that I've always wanted, but they are next to impossible to find in Canada.  If you find one, it's either WAYYYY overpriced, or there's more rust than actual metal.

A buddy I work with is always looking at different vehicles that you can import from Japan.  He sent me the link, and I just happened to find my dream rig there. :dd:  I don't like the color, but it's just what I want.

Ok, you're probably wondering what it is eh?  It's a 1991 Toyota Hilux, 4 door diesel. :dd:  http://autorec.co.jp/car-detail.php?refno=19564A1N7&country=CANADA&port=HALIFAX

Most normal people would probably think I'm a bit loopy for wanting something so old, but to me, it's an awesome rig!!  While I sit here drooling over it, tell me what you guys love.

There are plenty here  :D :D

Would a diesel be OK with the cold Canadian winter?  And for the same reason, wouldn't you prefer a closed bed?

The problem with most pick-up trucks is the limited sitting space at the back. Having spend many years sitting at the back, I have grown to dislike that.

I have an Isuzu 4wd pick up truck as well, but now I get to sit at the front   :D

I do not desire a specific 4wd vehicle. The bigger ones have more space but do not fit into smaller trails, bigger engines, more consumption... Army 4wd vehicles are also nice to drive..

I would like to get a 4wd van, sort of like the a-team van but raised and in 4wd.  Mitsubishi has some..

That's a good one D Mac! The older Toys are great, but the running boards would have to go...  :)

I have a few, but the grail would be an unmodified Willys MB.

Diesel vehicles sold here generally have block heaters.  Not sure if they would coming from Japan or not?  But yes, it could cause problems in very cold weather.  My old 88 diesel Jetta didn't like to start in the cold.  Our 02 diesel Jetta would start no problem even down below -15.  At the really cold temps, we'd cycle the glow plugs a few times, and it would fire right up.

A Hilux Surf would be more ideal, but then you lose the solid front axle. :(  I could always get a truck cap, or a truck bed tool box.

If our dollar was on par, or close to the US, I could seriously consider getting something.  The truck I linked to would be close to $17,000 to get here because of how bad the Canadian dollar is right now. :(

Haha, the running boards would be the first thing to go!! :D  Mmmm, the old Willys are nice!

Something big enough for my stuff but still fast.

Maybe a Hemi Ram  with 4.11 gears, ram air, magnaflow mufflers, tuner. Oh wait that is my truck.

I'm gonna sound crazy.

And old Chevy Apache, with a 6.6 LB7 Duramax in it. Probably an automatic 6spd with Suncoast internals.

Has to be red too.

Now that's nice! Close to my #2 pick (former grail rig ;)), '64 K20 with 327, SM420, Rockwell T/C, with locking diffs and 38" Swampers. Good choice NK.

Hmm  I had one of my dream trucks. One day while driving to work I saw this truck sitting on a hill I just thought it was sooo amazing, but I didn't know what it was. So a few years later I exsplaned it to my father in law and he drove me by something and he said is that it? Omg that's it(not the same one I saw but same make) a 53 Willys jeepster! We spoke to the mother of the owner, and she needed a new water heater, so she spoke to her son and we made a deal. The inline 4was shot, and we had another motor that we made a trade, a 79 corvette 350! Talk about a tight fit, I can keep going with details but I'd be here all day, but we had to sell it, she was a beauty!
As for trucks now a day, I like that one that "the Rock" had in the fast and furious movie, especially the second one he was in, that was a pickup, that thing looked nasty! >:D

A k20 is my second choice!!!!! :D we have very similar tastes.

Either truck would have full Rockwell axle swaps or go ahead and do 5 ton.
38s for Daily Driving ;)

I hate to say it but the interior would be modernized. Atleast bucket seats. (I'm not a Ford guy at all but their king ranch Leather is awesome)

Mine is all old school, no radio or power anything, bare bones work rig. 5 ton axles sound good, but the tired old 327 would struggle with those.  :)

No good photos...

Been pretty lucky with my 4x4s over the years and have had a wide variety.  I'm currently on my third Jeep Cherokee (XJ) though.  My last two were more off-roader than on-roader so I got myself a more civilized version for family use.  It's a 1998 and sits about stock height for now.  Added a 12k winch, recovery points, spare tire carrier, rack, etc.  Setting it up more as an expedition rig than a crawler.  This is my current dream 4x4 and I spent a long time looking for this specific color/options/mileage in the right condition.  Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but I'm digging it.

Harley, based on your username, I always thought you might have been an XJ guy or is that for something else?

I'd would take a 2016 Ford F-150 extended cab 4x4.  Aluminum body.

My restored 1969 Chevy CST-10.  I'm planning on selling it this spring.

Daily driver:  2009 Chevy Suburban 4x4.  I pretty much love everything about it, except the mpg.

I'd like a VW Syncro Bus 85-92 :D.  Prices are way too high for pretty much any VW Bus now a days.  I don't have the money to invest in fixing up what I could afford either.

I drive a Tundra 2wd which is decent for work but for play I'd like a Tacoma 4x4 and for a brief time I was looking at the Montero SR 93-96.  I'd love to build an overlander vehicle.

Really digging that Chevy.  :tu:  When I was growing up, we had one with a blue body and white top.  Not nearly in such nice shape but I'm still fond of them, particularly in stepside form.  Stepsides are inefficient uses of space, but boy, they can look sexy.

Really digging that Chevy [1969].

They strike a chord with a certain age group who either were growing up in the 70's or getting into adulthood and driving them.  Everyone had a Chevy truck back then, and now you don't see very many in good shape.  Driving it is like going back in time.

I didn't grow up in the 70's (born in '81) but we weren't very well off and we got one as a work truck for $500 or so.  Thing ran forever until my dad gave it to my younger brother one day who turned around and sold it.  My brother still wishes he hadn't done that and sometimes goes through spells of looking to buy another.  Of course, my bother's vehicle history is pretty checkered and he has a fair number of regrets from that time in his life.  Eventually he grew out of that phase, but there are lots of stories.

Good one 67! I miss my (ex wife's) XJ, it was a red '87 Wagoneer with fake woodgrain sides, wished I still had it. The EFI 4 liters are good engines. :)

Agree with the mileage, my '12 2500HD 6 liter is worse than my old beater, by about 7mpg. You would think they could figure this one out in 50 years...  :-\

Did you say '87 Wagoneer?  That was the second XJ I owned.  Used to be a farm truck and the lady hauled her minature pony around in the back.  It was NOT a pretty sight to see when we were cleaning it out.  The pony had knocked out the rear window and the grains she fed the pony had started to sprout.  Put a 4.5" lift and 33x12.50 craigslist tires under it.

My first XJ was a 1990 bought stock for $800 and had it lifted 4.5" on 33x13.50 Swampers in about a week and a half after purchase.
