Might just be me, but I can get a Carbon steel Mora much sharper that the SS blade, but both are easy to sharpen.

Might be because I actually use my Mora, but the carbon Bushcraft seems to rust quite easy.....simply touched it up with cold blue.

Also don't think chips should be a problem with the SS blades, just a guess but probably they got the heat treatment just right so its not too hard...

Another difference is that a carbon blade will leave a metallic taste on any food you prepare with it. Less so if you force a patina on it (with something acidic like vinegar etc).

Personally I prefer a carbon blade as they seem to have a life of their own and you have to take care of them (not much more than drying them). After prolonged use they take on a patina and it's like a map of it's travels.

I have a carbon Mora and my wife has a stainless one as she isn't at all interested in keeping it maintained.

Here's mine;

And my carbon Opinel (you HAVE to get one of these too )

i have an opinel no8 which says (i think, its a bit worn) "au carbone" on the handle but just "opinel france" on the blade itself, i'll do some pics tonight if i get a chance. assume it's carbon ??

I'll see what I can do :)

I suppose I could cut to the chase and get one of each - my youngest has demanded a blue one to match her leap and flashlight. But then that would ruin the fun. Who knew procrastination could be so much fun ?

so, stainless steel or carbon ? (for all practical purposes i doubt i'd know the difference) from my reading/youtubing this is what i understand -

stainless more rust resistant
harder to sharpen (and my skill there isn't great, but improving)
harder so more likely to chip if i do something stupid

carbon
more prone to rust so needs better care
easier to sharpen
less likely to chip if i do something stupid so easier to fix

thoughts ?

My thoughts:

Carbon is more forgiving, and will take a keener edge. It will also develop a patina over time and build "character" more than a stainless knife will. Carbon steels also tend to be more impact resistant at lower temperatures.

All great aspects, but all irrelevant I you're a lazy smurf like me and can't be bothered to maintain stuff. I don't want to be worried about using a knife in the rain, or being careful how it's dried, or checking on things in storage, or getting oxidised particles in food, or having to oil it and then having the additional worry about that oil getting on stuff I don't want oil on......

As you can tell, I'm veering away from carbon steels for my own use  :D

The stainlesses used are durable, easy to look after, cheap, and won't affect the taste of your lunch. I don't see any reason to not buy stainless personally  :)

Gave my daughter my Companion for her gear. I still have the heavy duty version and several of the old style Frost Companions that the army issued. All very capable....

whats your take on the regular vs the HD ?

I have huge hands, the HD's handle might even be better than the Bushcraft.
A buddy of mine swears he's going to buy a Bushcraft every time he uses mine.......then the realities of wife, kids and bills hit...
I've told him more than once, if you get the HD and sharpen the spine, you save money and you might arguably have a better knife....

i hear you on the bills ! thats why i'm not even considering the bushcraft - my hands are quite small, was thinking the handle might be uncomfortable for me.
why sharpen the spine ? for firesteel ?

The HD is just bigger all way round but based on your uses not necessarily better. I have XL hands and the HD is a better fit for me. Really liked the clip sheath on the HD too.

Yes, but very substantial!! The HD actually fits my hand better than my Bushcraft Blk.

This is the best feeling one in the hand...wish they still made them. The KJ Eriksson 1701 (middle)

Thanks Eamo!

The reg Companion was very nice. I only gave it to my daughter because she didn't have a camping knife and I had the old Frost's versions.  I think a Companion in SS is an excellent combination.

nice collection, but especially the moras ! been following your knife making thread, lovely work you've done. I imagine there's more satisfaction in making your own then in anything shop bought, no matter how nice ??

Very true, for exchange rate reasons I won't be buying any Tops knives, rather make my own version.
Next is a cross between a DART and the TFK.
This won't help you, but my Bushcraft Black is going with me no matter what I make myself........at this very moment waiting with all my camping stuff and the BB Bowie 1m from where I'm sitting.

I got it at a good price on sale, if I hadn't the HD would've worked just as well for all the same reasons.

ok, can't decide between the orange HD version which is carbon or the SS version - both isn't an option before someone says it.

will be getting a blue SS version for her ladyship regardless so . . .  what to do . . what to do . .

does the wider blade make a big differenve ? 3.5mm v 2.5mm ? i don't plan on batoning or abusing the knife i have a new hatchet for that  :viking: but then you never know . . . .

Given you are already planning on getting the blue SS one for your daughter I'd be inclined to get the HD carbon for yourself, if for no other reason than you can then compare and contrast the steels and thicknesses.

I definitely love my companion heavy duty mg.
I chose the the heavy duty because i use it a lot for wood splitting and the slightly larger handle fits my large hands better.

I have abused this knife a lot in a year or so and it has not failed yet. The sheath also works great. It still has good retention after a year of use and because of the belt clip you can easily mount it on belt less shorts or underwear etc..
