Let's say US.  Right now the Canadian dollar is doing so poorly that this is not too far off a $100 EDC....

I see! Still a useful bit of EDC, at least.

Outside of my phone, my EDC is already under $100 US.

El cheapo bill fold from Kohls was $12
Walmart bandana was $2
Three pack of Field Notes pocket notebooks was $11
Felix E01 was $10
Burt's Bees is $2.50 each
SAK Classic is $10
Uniball Jetstream is $2
Spyderco Pingo was$40

I have $10 more. Could probably find a Recruit on clearance, just for kicks.

I am a great fan of buying second hand stuff, saves a lot of money, saves materials and the enviorement and you dont have to baby it because most of the time they are already scratched.

100 dollar is 90 euros

I would buy:
Used Swisstool X (about 50 euros used)
Used Zippo ( about 5 euros used)
New fenix E01 ( costs 10 euros new)
65 euro total
Only problem, my current Bellroy slim wallet costed 70 euros  :o so that would make a total of 135 euros. I would probably buy a cheaper wallet although i really like the slim fit of the bellroy slim wallet because i hate to carry around a large bulge of leather, plastic passes and money. ( a waste of space for other edc items :D )

So I looked at old Takealot purchases and revised my R1500 carry;
Two good items on clearance allows me to upgrade the knife materials a little.
Gerber Octane - R369
Fenix PD22 - R359
Byrd Meadowlark G10 - R750 from small knife shop in St Lucia.
For EDC I only need basic drivers and bottle opening capability. Cutting and light are well done on this combo.

Hmm. In euros? So about 91 euros.

Vic Rambler (€20)
Swisscard lite(€15 second-hand)
Thrunite ti3 (€17 amazon)
Casio F-91W (€10-15 amazon, ideal watch for baddies!  :P)

That leaves about €20 for odds and ends, like pen and notepad, paperclips,  basic first aid equipment (plasters,  special wipes(?), etc), cheap paracord and other odd stuff.

This is fairly close to my actual edc, minus the vic rambler (don't have it) and the ti3 (getting it)

P.S. Wow. Got ninja-ed by Grathr, who listed a F-91W too!

After this challenge i realized just how expensive my current edc is.
60 for the Swisstool x
70 for bellroy slim wallet
45 for Suunto core all black
8 for my used Zippo
13 for my Fenix e01

That's a total of 196 Euros :o

100 USD = 134 AUD. Might get me a LM Wave, on Father's Day.

(I did some wacky-math, and I know your finances over there are different to ours, class/education gaps, gender weirdness, and whatever else you go going on, but with some wild assumptions, came up with 100 USD = 136 AUD in income terms, which was so close to the exchange rate it was weird, but for the most part unrelated)

For the sake of argument, and imagining I don't have ANYTHING that can do a job, I'd probably get a Bear Jaws or Supertool style multi (various tool brands make a version, reasonable bang-for-buck, and carry the brand's warranty), an Eveready/Duracell/Energizer torch of some description, a lighter.

Multi - $30
Torch - $30
Lighter - $3

So I have some cash still? I probably wouldn't pick up a cheap knife, if I'm "making do", I'll survive with the knife on the multi.

I guess I'd see what kind of watch I can get for my remaining 30-odd bucks.

Spirit here too, paired with a mini Maglite would be under $100, but honestly could make due with a Climber for a lot less, or a Pioneer.  :)

There are a lot of great options mentioned here.  $100US or adjusted for else where is a decent sum to get situated with EDC stuff.

Put aside the pocket jewelry and the wish list items.  Looking at utility and actual carry time and you could end up with nice robust stuff.   For those who don't currently EDC a plier based tool or like some of our awesome minimalist members, man that money would really go far.

I'd imagine a Tinker, AAA light, Watch, and who knows what else could be purchased.

Great topic! My $.02  :D All prices from Ebay, new items with shipping.

Fenix E12. Three level, dim enough low for runtime, smooth beam, bright enough for seeing a good ways on high. Reliability/reviews have been good. $25.00

Vic Explorer. Two blades, opener layer, scissors, magnifier, screwdrivers, awl. Covers MOST of my multitool needs, and a few others. Scissors are a must edc item for me. $45.00

Vise-Grip WR4. Covers my Plier needs and then some. Small enough to carry, big enough to take care of a lot of tasks. I've never broken a pair.  $12.00

Mini Bic- I don't smoke, but I carry one everywhere. You never know...  $2.00

That leaves me at $89.00. Plenty for a pack of batteries for the Fenix, a small first aid kit, a hank of 550 cord at Wally World, etc. +/- a dollar or two.

If I were limited to $100, I think I could be okay with this setup. It's pretty close to my normal preferences, but my selection would likely be up around $200 I guess since I like the Vic multitool, Peak light, and a Minichamp. But this is about the same, just downsized a bit. :)

Amazon prices:

Vic Alox Electrician - $31.60
Leatherman Fuse - $31.99
Fenix E05 - $19.95
Vic Classic - $11.59

Total = $95.13

Good lists.  Here's my shot with ballpark figures.  Everything can be had cheaper if looking.

Leatherman Rebar - $50
Victorinox Tinker Small - $20
Fenix E01 - $10
Fox 40 Micro Whistle - $8
*Handkerchief - $2
BSA Hot Spark ferro rod - $4
Free pen - $0
**Bic mini electric lighter - $5
***2 Pair PPE gloves < $1

* - Handkerchiefs have an untold number of uses.  I carry a red one so it can be used as a brighter signal if need be.  Be mindful of local gang colors.
** - When you're cold and have lost dexterity in your fingers, push button fire is the way to go.  This is a neat-o Search And Rescue trick.
*** - You do carry gloves, right?  We all like to help out if need be but what if the person you are helping is bleeding everywhere?  Use the gloves when applying your handkerchief bandage.  Remember to check and replace your gloves frequently or they won't be suitable when you need them.

Total is $100 but you could shop around or save and squeeze in some more.  Like if you got the Rebar on sale or used, you could upgrade to a Victorinox Farmer + Victorinox Manager instead of the Tinker Small and have a more compact pen solution and then some.  I do not carry a bag and these items are all very pocketable.

Interesting discussion!  :tu:

$100 = £72

Victorinox Spirit = £68.50 on Amazon

And look!  A 2000 lumen torch for just £3.50. :D

I carry an Ultrafire 502B which is nearly identical to the 501B, and it's a great torch for the price.  However, at that price it says the battery and charger are not included, so it's not going to help much.  You might want to look for a light that comes with the battery or batteries and maybe one that uses AAs instead of an 18650 that requires a charger.

1) Victorinox Explorer Plus - $50 (weekend/outing carry)
2) Victorinox Manager - $24 (office carry)
3) Victorinox Jetsetter3 - $20 (travel carry)

I'd skip the dedicated knife; I can make do with one of the above.

I'd skip the dedicated flashlight; I can make do with my cell phone's LED light. I've tried carrying a flashlight, but realistically, it just doesn't happen.

Some very interesting responses thus far. I am interpreting EDC quite literally as it's what I would carry every day under typical, routine circumstances, and not what I'd grab to head for the wilderness to escape the Zombie Apocalypse.
  • $60 - used Victorinox Woodsman in excellent condition; ePrey. Some new 2014 Mexico reissue were sold on ePrey for $70 a few months ago
  • $11 - new Maglite LED Solitaire (Amazon)
  • $17 - used MiniChamp II in excellent condition without the LED, just the pen; ePrey.
  • $08 - new small sharpening steel (Amazon)
I've got a $4 dollars left over for Burger King, including coffee, or I could swap out the Solitaire for the two AAA cell LED model that goes new for $15 but doesn't fit as well in the pocket on a key ring. The Woodsman has just about everything I'd ever use in a typical day. I've never had a need for hundreds of lumens, other than when I've been illuminating knives for photos  ;)  and the LED lights are much more power efficient compared to the older incandescent Maglites.
