Why I hate kayakers
on: August 06, 2016, 04:40:16 PM
This post should probably actually be called "why I hate enthusiasts of anything" and why I try to keep all of the language here on the forum normal, and without jargon.

I was looking for reviews on a whitewater boat and this is what I came up with.

https://boatertalk.com/review/review.php?reviewid=468

Quote
...Easier then the ultrafuge and a little bit easier then the XXX. When double pumping the stern tends to get pulled down quite far but as long as you don't throw your weight to far back this is not a problem. Bow stalls and Stern stalls were easy and this is the first Riot I've paddled that has alowed for lower angle cartwheels.

On a wave

Three words... This is loose! This is one of the loosest boats I've ever paddled! The wave I was on was too shallow to do verticle moves accept for low angled blunts which were very easy.

River Running

I would be comfortable up to IV in this boat, bow tends to pearl a bit when you eddy out but slightly tilting the boat and leaning back should correct this.
Resonable amount of speed for it's length, boofed quite well, Stable in holes.

I've been kayaking for years and I have no idea what this guy is talking about.  Boofed?  Pearl?  Loose?  Blunts?

This review is, IMHO virtually worthless.  It reminds me of this guy:

Hobby idioms are a way to augment the feeling that one belongs in a special group, much as professional idioms.

I guess relevant terminology will always be tricky (even more so for those of us here who don't have English as our first language). I know there is a topic trying to explain some of the abbreviations commonly used on the forum but it's hardly the first thing one's going to look for.

There are some forums that have a mouse over function for common abbreviations, might be worth looking into?

Maybe I don't realize just how many specific terms we use, but I actively try not to, and keep my posts as straight up as I can.

I hope that, for the most part at least, we aren't that bad.

I know your pain - not the broken bone bit, fortunately, but the long suffering toy budget bit . . . .

See the question I keep asking myself is new blank or just wait for the day I have the money for a new boat.

I know what a boof is, but yeah that is not helpful unless you are into whitewater already.

There's a lot of whitewater around here and I want to give it a shot.  I'd done some whitewater as it has come up on trips, but I've never been out on a dedicated whitewater trip.  I hope to fix that, maybe next year, but I'm sort of hoping to get a boat cheaply towards the end of the season this year.  As whitewater boats are significantly smaller (6-8 feet is usual, while my boats are 13 and 17 feet) they should be a breeze to store over the winter.

Where I used to live there was a very small amount of whitewater going on, and most of what whitewater boats were used for there is surfing.

I'm not 100% persuaded he is talking about kayaking.... :-\

I've spent more than a few moments trying to decipher people's acronyms (actual words are not so bad)

Don't take it personally though, it's rife everywhere.
I've got a reference chart in my desk so I can go back to my office after meetings to work out what the hell the meeting was about and if any decisions were made.

The trick is can you get them to explain something without using Jargon?

The "local language" is relatively easy to pick up if you hang around those types, or read the appropriate magazines, but knowing what it all means is somewhat different.
