The Little SAKs
Reply #960 on: October 14, 2022, 02:45:14 PM
Was it the blade?

I’ll admit that if I have any doubts about the durability of any of the 58mm tools it’s the actual blade itself.  I’ve used and abused the other tools on my 58mm SAKs, especially the scissors, and they have always performed wonderfully and hardly shown much wear and tear at all.

But for some reason that little blade always makes me hesitate. Has anyone really pushed it with the blade on a 58mm? Really tested it under pressure?
Years ago I got a used Classic off of EBay.  I thought the little knife looked weak and since I had paid next to nothing for it I figured I’d abuse the blade and see if it would break.  Basically I did a lot of prying with it on things that were not pry able .   Did this just to see if the blade would bend or break easily as it looked so fragile.  I would bend the blade so much that I was nervous the thing was going to snap and go flying.  The blade held up just fine and the knife was no worse for the wear.  Made a believer out of me and I never questioned the little 58mm SAKs again.

Rescued an abused one from the bay, it's in my 'just in case' pack.
The new one is on my keys and I use it daily, no problem!
Quasi-destructive testing? No.

I’m considering trying to organize a Rambler/Manager challenge in a few months. The Rambler is still my favorite 58mm SAK.

I don’t know, once you have the 58mm combo tool, it’s tough to go back to the Classic!

There is a challenge for <75mm SAKs. If it'll be in a few months, I'll keep my schedule clear.

Can't go wrong with them, though I'd love to see them available with factory Alox scales.

The 58mm line is the most under estimated line of SAK's. About 25 years ago, my wife came home from work, and proudly showed me the Chinese made SAK knock  off classic that her boss had bought to put the company logo on as giveaways for clients. It was so bad, the scissors would fold the paper instead of cutting it. The next day I bought a real classic

She was blown away by the difference. So was her boss when she showed him. He promptly returned the Chinese classics and bought real ones to put the logo on. I had never had a classic because I thought they were so small they were a joke. No way they would hold up to real world use day after day.

The joke was on me.

For the next few months I watched as Karen put that tiny SAK through use and abuse. I kept expecting to hear the tinkle of small parts hitting the ground as it fell apart. It didn't. So I bought a classic and did my experiment, making it a point to reach for the classic first for any little job came up. Cutting open packages, dealing with screws, snipping scissors jobs, whatever. I didn't bad it.

I became a die hard convert to the classic. Now, that I am over the knife nut thing, and sold off/gave away most my knives, the classic is one of my most carried pocket knives. It either teamed up with a bantam, or just carried by itself if I'm just knocking mourned town. It breaks down boxes, cuts jute twine for the garden out back, opens plastic blister packages with ease, trims a broken nail, snips coupons, plucks stickers out from between our dogs paw pads and much more.

For a urban or suburban dweller, the 58mm SAK's really can do the EDC thing by themselves, as long as we don't get into fantasy trips. If I need a self protection weapon, thats why I carry a gun.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

If anything, my knife related fantasies involve Macgyverisms, not self defense. IMHO a knife of any kind makes a pretty poor self defense weapon.

If you're down to using a knife for self defense, you better be looking for a way out of that fight.  It's doable but only as an absolute last resort.

Nah, not even then. If my gun, then pepper spray, then blackthorn walking stick then bar stool, beer mug, beer pitcher, fireplace poker,  adjustable wrench, ball peen hammer, jack handle, Maglite flashlight, chair, padlock and bandana, doesn't work, then I'll run like the dickens. No knives for this guy, I've seen one real knife fight in my life, and I ain't going there.

But my little Vic classic is death on plastic blister packages!

Your pockets must be pretty full, what with fireplace poker, ball peen hammer, bar stool, etc!

It all depends on what you are defending against, doesn't it?  If someone is threatening you with fists, a knife can prevent a large muscular opponent from grappling and overpowering a smaller or weaker person.

That's true... I just haven't been able to bond with the Minichamp for some reason. Plus, I'm doing the Executive challenge in December and don't think I want to do back to back challenges. I was thinking that a hypothetical Ramber/Manager challenge could happen in the spring maybe?

But maybe a more generalized 58mm challenge would be better?
