Lockable S biner
on: September 12, 2016, 11:30:42 AM
Are the lockable Nite Ize S-Biner any good?

I almost lost my work ID today when it unclipped from my work keys in my pocket. I though the new clip I was using would prevent it but I guess not.

These are the ones I was going to buy if they do actually lock and stay locked

I use one of these S Biners SlideLock models for my keys. They work great.

I've got the same ones Chako has and they work great. I can't comment on the other version as I've never tried it.

I got a pair a couple months ago. That's not a very long test but they lock tight enough I think they'll be safe.

Had the standard one (not the S-type) and I can't add to Chakos and Grants praise... It unlocked in my pocket and stuff fell off.

As a result I'm currently looking for a better, small sized, solution :P

Btw, I'm putting my money on a tried and tested principle from rock climbing like this (just smaller):

I had the same trouble with the regular S-biners :-\ Glad to hear the locking model holds up better and I may get a few of those myself :like:

I have a smallish sized locking biner similar to the Eth is talking about and it has been good on what I have used it on as well :tu:

Those are fine, but a little more work to lock and unlock them, after a while you maybe start to forget locking them then ....  :bnghd:

I use a German G3 rifle sling attachment to hold my keys, which I am 100% confident about it.

Oh, G3! It takes me 20 years in the past.

I'm looking for the same thing. But the G3 is small, a climbing carabiner would be good. The one I use now opened many times in the past. I lost nothing but I won't always be so lucky.

Kevin

I have had the smallest locking s biner (the same as shown in your photo) on a set of keys for a couple of months and have had no problems.  They lock up quite stiffly although I imagine if you were locking and unlocking them regularly they may loosen up.  I doubt you will have a problem with them.

John.

Thanks guys  :tu:

I think I'll but a couple of them and see how they fair.  It won't need to be detached very often so they will stay locked most of the time. It's more to prevent the twist action unlocking it and allowing it to slip off in my pocket which I think the lock on these will do.

Time will tell.

That is quite the selection of keys and other stuff!  And here I thought my keychain was bulky!   :ahhh

The set with the carabiner is my regular carry set, the other set is the keys to my house.  I used to carry them all together, but since I moved I have separated the house keys from the rest, and as you can imagine, that makes a HUGE difference!  :D

After some failures with S-biners I decided to carry my most valuous and irreplaceable stuff (i.e. keys) with a reliable, tough system that also allowed easy and quick detachment.

I found this Aitor, Spanish made thing in a flea market...an old product from years gone by

It strongly retains two independent metal rods via a metal disc that locks them in, and can be pressed to slide up the rods through the rail and get them out and free, detached from the belt-attachment. Sorry for my very poor english and lame description

I've been using the smallest ones to hold stuff on my keyring for about a year and, as long as I remember to lock them I've not had any issues.  Left unlocked they can open in my pocket though.

I've been happy with the Slide Lock version (size #2).  Nothing has fallen off, and I like that I could use it as a pocket hook/hanger that wasn't too hard to slide off the edge of my pocket (most biners have edges or corners that catch when using them this way).  I actually took one off my keys to give to my father in law when he noted how much he liked it.  And then I came home and couldn't find my spare one   So I've been trying to find if there's a better replacement option out there, but I think I'll end up with more of these.

That looks like a serious piece of hardware.  If you lose keys off that I doubt you can claim faulty equipment as the issue!   :ahhh

This one will allow you to quickly detach what you need when you need, but will hold everything locked when you need it. I like taking my car key off so that I do not have everything hanging off of it when it is in the ignition.  This set up is highly convenient. Prior to this, I did EDC a Nite Ize S carabiner that didn't lock, and I often found my car key would drop to the ground. I never lost it, but it was just a matter of time. The locking model did the trick.

You just add some plastic ring and that's it? It works?
What kind of plastic is that?

No. They have a cutout for the plastic to slide into. As for as the plastic, I am not sure. But it is tough and hard as hell.

I think I am gonna track down some of the locking S-biners and see how they do :tu: That was the only fault I had with the regular ones and this seems to have remedied that :like:

There shouldn't be any shortage of those in any climbing/outdoors store.

They may not be cheap though!

I have a small selection of both the older, nonlocking S-biners, and a couple of the slide-lock S-biners.  Whereas I would only use the non-locking ones if I'm suspending something within a bag, I am currently using a locking one to keep my car key and house keys together, in an experiment to see if keeping them together like that works better than my older setup.  I'm still not sure I'm happy with it, so I may still need to experiment more.
