Day 12 I have with me another Case knife today and this one belonged to my other great grandfather that Iknew  There is so stuff on the blade if you look close because he used this knife the day he died :) He was a feisty old man as well and lived into his late 70s he used the knife that morning to cut some corn stalk down in his garden and went to rest on the couch and when my great grandmother went to get him up that was it  He died a very peaceful death and the way many of us would wish to go  I carried but won't use the knife as it is like a moment of his life preserved in time but it is a great reminder of him as I was over 8 years old when he died and remember him very well  My Granny his daughter gave me this knife a while later as her mother gave it to her :tu: I am very blessed to have so many different peoples knives in my family  The blades of this knife you can tell have been used quite a bit as well and was carried quite a bit :tu:

I thought the Vietnam knife was a Randall #1 or 14, or a Kbar etc.

Yes, that would be more accurate.  The label "Vietnam Knife" is just a term used by some collectors for the #49 since so many were bought in PXs at the time.  This is according to Case's website--I've never heard anyone call it that in person.

I don't know much about what was issued during the war, but I assumed that some folding knife was issued.  Is that not correct?
I might be way off here but back in the early 90s in NC you could go into a local milsurp and get hold of a "SA type" folder, Camper like thing that had a big **US ** stamped on the main blade.

I just remembered that. I'm not military or LEO, but a slew of my friends over the years have been.

Now I wish I'd've bought one of those. I don't want to hijack this but I have the same questions.
I think you're talking about the MIL-K-818 it was issued starting in 1944 if I remember right. Up until the late 80's maybe when it was replaced by the MP 600. They weren't always issued but you could ask your supply Sargent for one.

On a side note I also have his pocket watch that my Granny also gave me and had it repaired back into working condition over 15 years ago and it still runs today if you wind it up  I have more than some people that is passed down but less than others as well and what I do have is very cherished as I am very sentimental :D

Me too Ponch...Dem Pappaw knives brought a tear to my eye...and yeah, I'm a big enough man to say dat!

I still have the last knife my Pappaw bought before he passed, AFAIK. It was my Christmas present the year before, a BUCK 110 FG circa 1987.

He hated stainless...thought BUCK was a fly by nite that would never last, and taught me how to sharpen and HONE...I still have a scar from his old CASE CV TRAPPER.

He's the reason I love Case, Tabasco, Zippo, a good pipe, a good fire, and a good 22 LR.

Life is GOOD...Hickock45

Hey guys...I know this may be anathema to some of you, but those RUST ERASER BLOX work great to VERY slowly remove any over zealous pitting in carbon steel without ruining the surrounding polish if done right.

Wait...
What am I thinking??

You guys know more than I ever will about metal finishing...Y'all rebuild and mod this stuff...oh well...

Day 13 Little late but when I got home last night the internet was off and I didn't get on so here is the pic I took of my 3 blade Stockman green pick bone Hen and Rooster :tu: As you can see in the first pic they put the year on this shield and I thought they were going to continue to do this but think that may have been the only year that they did this  So this puts thus knife at 15 years old and that is how long I have had it

Day 14 So to get a jump on today I went and took some pics for this lovely tiny knife :tu: It is an Imperial Schrade USA 1 blade knife with possibly fake MOP handles and a bail :tu: This knife use to have The Progressive Farmer written on it but much of that has faded over the years, this knife was my Granny's (my mothers mother) knife and as the knife nut and only boy grandchild I got this after her passing. She always told me that everyone should have a knife and even as small as this knife is she had it and used it when needed  She was a very special woman to me and one of those people that always helped any and everyone that she could and I do miss her often but this knife and a few other things I have of hers help keep her memory fresh :tu: Her father's knife was also the knife from day 12 :like:

A very special knife for sure. :tu: :tu: :tu:
I had it pictured in my mind as a 3 1/4 inch knife until you put it next to the SAK.

Thankfully, I have a good memory and that is why I can tell you so much about them and I am thinking now that it is a great idea to have this written down somewhere all in one place, that way when I am gone the person that gets these knives will know a bit about them  My little girl is sentimental as I am or more and whether she or her child ends up with these I want them to know about them as I do :tu: I am gonna point her to this thread if I never get around to writing this down though ;)
