Mail call!

My first thought was "Holy crap this thing is big!"  Then I pulled out my trusty Victorinox Compact to cut it free from the package and realized just how big this knife is.

 :ahhh

I realize that being non locking, under 3" and non OH opening this knife is supposedly legal in all jurisdictions, but I have to wonder how thrilled most police officers would be to see someone pulling a gigantic knife like this out in public!

Even folded it is huge, and weighs quite a bit as well, so I guess at least you will know when you lose it as you can stop pulling your pants up constantly.

On the up side, the World Legal Knife has a pocket clip that can be changed to right or left handed carry as well as tip up or tip down carry, which is a nice feature to find on a knife.  Everyone has a different preference and it doesn't seem difficult to me to drill a few extra holes, but many manufacturers and designers are unwilling to do it.

Opening and closing of this knife is a bit of a chore too- it has one hell of a powerful backspring and a half stop for "safety."  I almost cut off my little finger once because of the added safety of a half stop, and while it was also due to me doing something stupid, I have mistrusted half stops ever since.

I like the blade shape, at least where it pitches forward at the end.  This gives you a nice tip for smaller, more precise cuts, but overall the blade seems large for the sake of being large.

In a lot of ways this knife seems like the wet dream of an overly tactical mall ninja type trying to develop a knife that would be "sheeple friendly" and yet still be cool enough to show your colleagues at the next League Of The Unspeakable luncheon.

All in all though, the bottom line is that this knife is (supposedly) legal in every jurisdiction, and I actually do like the knife, despite it being oversized.  I'll update this after a little bit of use to see whether it's actually neat or just seems that way.

The usefulness of the downturned, hooked point, as mentioned, is why I like the pruner blade of the 93mm Alox models

It reminds me a lot of this giant folding karambit from MTech I got a while ago.  So much so that I wonder if they were made in the same factory.  While the World Legal Knife doesn't have a country of origin stamped into it, I would assume it is a Chinese or possibly Taiwan made knife judging by the price.  I dropped all of $30 on this knife, but then I also got this with it:

I have been a fan of Lansky sharpeners for years, and I greatly loved my old Lansky sharpening kit- the one with the clamp.  So, since Lansky is such a good name in sharpeners and this bit looked convenient, I'd have paid close to $30 for this alone.

I've yet to use it, but my Compact is getting pretty dull so I imagine it will get some use shortly.  I like how this has pretty much any knife covered- serrated, plain edge, super steel, guthook, you name it, this doodad should clean it right up, and it's pretty conveniently sized too, so it should fit well in any EDC bag.

While the knife may not be perfect, I have high hopes for this sharpener.

I touched up the blade on my Compact with the ceramic rods and it was razor sharp after just a few strokes.  I think I'll give it a shot with a few different blades and see what happens.

The big bottom line to me is, what will this monstrosity do that a Victorinox recruit or tinker not do? And it will NOT have the under the radar innocent appearance of the SAK. It's a overly large one trick pony when you get right down to it. At least if I'm in some country where knives are restricted, my Vic recruit can open bottles, open cans, screw or unscrew both flat and phiilps screws, and has two blades. In dire emergency the tweezers can be used for a dent roach clip or splinters.

I know from traveling to the U.K. and Europe, nobody gives a SAK a second glance. I don't think this thing will slide under the radar as easy. It's a bid by Lansky to simply get some money out of the tactical knife craze. Greed, pure and simply.  It's for wannabe ninjas living in knife restricted places.

Exactly!

And not to mention less expensive to buy. I've picked up basic two layer SAK's at second hand shops and TSA sales for 5 dollars. And your pants pockets will thank you for it. I haven't been to Europe for a long time, but last time I was there, there was a definite anti knife feeling. I can't imagine that it's gotten any better since then. With easy open packages, pre-cut food items, they have done a great deal to make sure theres less need of a knife these days in any urban or suburban area.
