I don't have any "quality" folders. About the closest I have are the 2 for the price of 1 Byrd knives I picked up earlier in the month. But in all honesty, they're good enough for my occasional use. I've found that I can't put the Meadowlark Rescue Blade down, it just feels "nice".

I wouldn't mind picking up a quality folder sometime, but probably only if there;s a bargain or such, or a gift :D

Dave, what do you consider a quality folder? If I have one that fits your needs it's yours!

You know, that's a good question!

I would say, something that feels solid in the hand, not heavy, but you know it's there. A blade that opens and closes smoothly but with a reassuring snap as the lock engages. A blade made from decent steel that you know is strong and will retain it sharpness for when you need it.

Does that make sense?

I used to come here a lot.

Would you want to go for a non-locker so you could carry it or one for doing specific stuff?

I EDC all sorts of stuff that lock, but this would probably be for around the house stuff rather than EDC.

As it happens, the debate is at an end, and a certain helpful gent has arranged for me to get my hands on a decent knife ;)

Will report more later!

However there are 2 great buys out there. Spyderco Native S30v, And th Bm Griptillian in D2.

However there is also a Kbar folder in D2 for like 20 bucks but I forget teh model.

I think I may have posted some of these on other parts of the site, but this seems to be the relevant place for it... here's some pics of what used to be my EDC for quite a few years (and the wear on it shows a bit) a Benchmade Sentinel...

The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Here's just about all I have left.  There may be something else hidden away here and there, but this is pretty well all I found, except of course for single bladed SAKs (which I consider SAKs, not tactical knives) and LM knives, which for the most part I don't consider tactical knives either.

There's the group....

I believe this is the blue one that Ben was referring to- at least I hope so as it's the only blue one I have!

I shouldn't have to tell anyone that it's a rare Blue Native from Spyderco.  The scales are blue g-10 and the blade is CPM 440, which was basically the first CPM knife steel.  The lock is so smooth you can open and/or close the blade just by cycling it.

Up next we have an original CRKT M-16:

This knife is now designated the M16-12 and also has a flipper.  This one was produced before the flippers came out, and before there were ten thousand and six different variants.  How do I know?  I bought it when it was released...

Next up is the CRKT KISS knife, designed by Ed Halligan:

Another great design, and one that's been beaten to death with a thousand variants.  This one has seen better days- a "friend" tried to sharpen it for me once and i haven't been able to bring myself to carry or use it since.  Again, another one I have owned since they first came out.

Then there's my Ladybug, which you've all seen recently:

And the Mini Dyad you've also seen recently:

My CRKT Fulcrum Flame, also described at length in a recent thread:

This one is a knife kit from Linville Knife and Tool.  It's a nice knife and for a mere $35, it is a good kit, but there were some problems with additional kits from Linville and so I never bothered to make any more.

If you look real close you may be able to see some vague squiggly lines on the blade near the spine that is where I had "DEFENDER" engraved on it.  It doesn't show up very well in pictures unfortunately as the blade steel refused to be engraved easily.

And last but certainly not least, my Benchmade Panther.  I really didn't care for this one when it was current, but I had to buy it when I heard it was discontinued.

After carrying and using it for a while I fell madly in love with the subtle recurve and large cutout for the liner lock.  This knife also has the type of sound associated with a no nonsense blade, which was amazing for what was effectively an entry level Benchmade.  My first one was "borrowed" by another "friend" and I never saw it again.  My second was the wrong blade style and so I got rid of it shortly after I got it, and this is my third, and it isn't going anywhere!

I think that's it for folders... if I find any more I'll add to the list!

CRKT makes some really nice stuff- I have had a number of their knives over the years and I can't fault any of them.  Also, CRKT listens to the silly people that buy their products, which is also nice.  The thumb stud on the M-16 is too close to the pivot and tucks nicely into the handle when closed, giving it a very clean and tight look and feel.  Unfortunately, it makes it difficult to open since it's hard to get at the stud, and when you do, there's little to no leverage since you are so close to the pivot.  The wunnerful folks at CRKT then introduced the flipper to fix the problem while retaining the lines and feel.

And the best part?  It's all affordable!

I was looking at the DDR Button lock one. Very nice blade steel, and can take the spring kit easy.

What is the problem with Linvill.

It took forever for the kits to arrive (supposedly three kits, all ordered at the same time and sent to three different places all got lost in the mail), then two of them were missing parts and the third one was missing the instructions.  The kit I got arrived quickly and with no problems, so I ordered more kits for friends for Christmas.  I still don't know if everyone got the parts they needed to finish the knives.

Of course Tim Britton (a different Tim!) was going through some problems at that time, so it's possible that was a rare occurrence and it's probably quite safe to deal with them.  For the low cost, it's worth a shot and BHC might have some fun helping you put it together!
