I realy have no idea what the record is, but looking at the pics... I think the old coin is still legal tender.

What a nice thread this is! Never saw it before. Stupid me missed it completely!

Thanks Aloha  :hatsoff:

Exactly, EMZ,  it's about age.  :tu:

This coin from 1879 is the oldest common legal tender in the world that is still being produced today.

Awesome!

I love elongated pennies as souvenirs. Cheap and a good way to remember an event.

Me and my oldest daughters have been getting them when we go places.
My wife and I have a few of these from different places we have gone.  They are really nice for a cheap way to remember a place.

I picked up the 1907 coin off the ground while walking at the flea market.  I added the others coins just for fun.  Made sense to add my Explorer since it does have the mag glass  :tu:

I should have guessed a thread like this exists... A while back I posted this - a Ranger 55 Onyx, a JFK Half Dollar from 1968 (my year of birth) and a Swedish 1 öre copper piece, my lucky coins that I keep on my nightstand to fondle whenever I have to brood in deep thought.

Thanks to the €uro, I have a box full of disused coins from my pre-€uro travels, ranging from the USA to UAE to South Africa to Estonia, Rubles, Shekels, Baht, Dirham, Shillings, Guilders, Francs, etc. And a big bowl of Finnish copper 5 penni coins that we use as poker chips.

Cool find.

Been soo long since I remembered what a penny looked like. We got rid of them decades ago.

BTW It's Nova Scotia, which is basically New Scotland.

When I get back to my place as it being renovated.  Im sure I can contribute.  Did collect some coins on my tour. Also got not traditional coins but were used as coin value.

Anyone been overseas would know pog currency. Yes it was legal currancy on base as USD change.

In honor of the last US penny being struck recently (40+ years later than it should’ve been, IMO), here’s a $0.01 piece from 1801. Well worn, with a counter stamp and some environmental damage, but still fun.

Here's a coin I've carried around for a few years now; it's 99 years older than I am. I was looking for my exact birth year but couldn't find one. I don't know much about numismatics but I thought it was a cool coin. I don't think the photos are very clear, though, unfortunately.

The photos are very clear. I can make out that it was minted in 1891, but I think the obverse shows an alphabet I can't read.

I think it's a bit difficult to tell because the letters have been worn a bit from being carried around in my pocket with a bunch of other metal items and the photos are still not very clear, but the text is Russian, albeit with certain archaic (from our point of view) features, like the retention of word-final -ъ in masculine nominative singular nouns like Aleksander III's name. It's funny, actually, in the mid-9th century (AD) when Cyril and Methodius were creating the Cyrillic alphabet for translating scripture and writing homilies, the Pope got wind of it and decided that the (original) alphabet — which we now call Glagolitic — was too 'demonic'. As a result the brothers were forced to create an entirely different alphabet, which is the Cyrillic still used today, which was based off Greek; since the New Testament was written in Greek, the Pope could have no quarrel there. But here's the funny bit: the brothers sneaked in some characters from their original (Glagolitic) alphabet, like ж (in English it would be the sound of the s in the word Asia). So the brothers got the last laugh!
