Day: 19

Yeah.....you knew it was coming..... Chicken Day!

For me no challenge is complete without using the challenge tool to break down a chicken.  Lyndax had her chance today.

I used Lyndax like an Ulu, which allowed for some fairly nifty cuts. Here she has made a curving slice to liberate the 'oyster' and leave it attached to the thigh. Well done!

She's not much of slicer. Can slice, yes, but better at cutting and chopping (in a slow controlled manner, in this case).  Regardless, Lyndax pieced out the chicken nicely.

The chicken got dressed with salt, pepper, and za'atar. Then it was onto the grill......

The chicken was great. I was a bit surprised that Lyndax lost her edge during the process. Beforehand, I tested the edge and she was slicing paper like a proper knife. Afterward, slicing paper was not consistent and there was some tearing. During the chicken breakdown, I did press the edge through skin and meat and into the cutting board. Perhaps this little bit of pressure was enough to roll the egde.  :dunno:

A brief stropping (after cleaning) brought the edge back, but not to pre-chicken cutting sharpness. So, tomorrow will see a bit more sharpening.   :tu:

Day19
Today we get to see my first tacticool axe this one is an unbranded (most likely United Cutlery) copy of the LaGana Vietnam tomahawk. About 10years ago I used a rotary tool to lengthen out the eye little bit so that it will accept standard hammer handles instead of the round ball peen type. It is currently fitted with a 14-inch Vaughan framing handle which still. took a little bit of shaving to fit. I jokingly say this thing is more of a weird shaped club as the steel is too soft to actually hold an edge and the grind on it is too chunky to be made into a cutter without major work.

Sitting next to it is technically another type of knife/axe this is an Aranyk Etoh made in Thailand. This particular blade falls somewhere between a extra heavy cleaver and a Froe (aka shake axe/ paling knife) with an intended uses of universal heavy chopper but a focus on wood cutting and splitting. If falls in that weird "is it a knife or an axe" category that a lot of kindleing froes, heavy cleavers and two handed hog splitters wind up in.
This blade was my preferred fireplace splitter last I had one. The Etoh is no light blade either; it is a full 1/4in thick the whole way, convex ground, and weighs around 2 1/2 pounds. I have also seen people mount these on longer 2-hand handles. In the end I guess it's classification just ends up on being who's using it and for what.

Surprised that the cutting board would roll your blade edge.

Neat you used it as you did, just catching this thread and apologize if I overlooked, what steel is your axe forged from?  No metallic taste transferred?   Curious, that’s all.

I'm not sure what the Rinaldi is made from.  I think most axes are left soft to be able to handle impact shock and avoid chipping. So a little edge deformation isn't too surprising, although.... it didn't take me more than a couple of minutes work.

WHe I was carving wood the other day, the edge seemed to hold up just fine. But, of course, my observations are fairly subjective.  :dunno:

Thanks comis  :tu:

Thought i would give all you axe men a health and safety refresher, taken from a 1965 Forestry Commission safety book i found many years ago, not much about axes in it but i thought these two pages would be worth a pic, it's a nice little book done with humour, and lots of blood in the cartoons..pretty grim really but fun with it, i guess the object was to scare them into doing things safely and make them laugh at the same time :tu:

That's must be a cool read, love these two pages.  Pretty good illustration, especially the detail like the bee.  A picture is worth a thousand words indeed.  :tu:

Now that's a chopper!  I bet that tool is like a multi-garden-tool, where you could do everything what you are not supposed to do with a knife!  >:D :D

Kinda curious about this too, I would think most kitchen knife aren't that high on Rc, but I could be wrong.  I know Axe edge usually is much lower in the scale, but I'd think it should still be sufficiently ok otherwise it won't hold its edge with all the wood work.  Is the Rinaldi made of some kind fiberglass?

Day 20

Used Chip Chop for the food prep, but I was hungry and didn't even remember to take photo.  Nonetheless, this is one of my favorite noodle dish from our family receipt.  Consists of minced pork, shiitake mushroom, dried scallop, green onion, parsley and deep friend onion.
