Inspired by Tazzie Rob, I pulled out the draw knife and spoke shave. It's a warm, but nice day here, so I rigged up a little carving bench outside:






The draw knife was great at hogging off the wood, but I did run into some bigger chunks of tear-out. This was most likely due to operator error, I believe. A well sharpened draw knife can be something of a finesse tool in skilled hands; I wish I had a set of those hands around here somewhere......






Once things threatened to get out of control, I switched over to a spoke shave. The wood kept flying off and the head now snugs on to the start of the handle.  (yes, this means I have my head where my knob should be.)
