My latest knife and a question!
on: June 23, 2019, 01:21:17 AM
Just picked up a Buck Inertia at Walmart. I really like the knife, but what tool do I use to adjust the pivot? It sort of looks like a spanner bit would do the job, but I do not have one that is wide enough! Thanks in advance to any assistance you can give me!

Why do you need to adjust pivot? Is it sloppy? Or, to tight and does not deploy automatically or completely?

Sorry,  do not have one to help determine what bit.  I have a Quickfire and it works as described with a lock back mech.

Specialized spanner. Kinda silly Buck didn't supply it with the knife.  Eickhorn always does, as does Skedco with their versions of the Eickhorns.     Your best bet might be to send it off to Buck, or at least contact them--they might now what size you'll need to buy.

I just tried the tips of my Wave pliers and they fit snug into two opposing notches. I was able to loosen and tighten like that. Good leverage being a Wave too. :)

Specialized spanner.

 :iagree:

If you can get approximate measurements (size of holes and diameter of fastener), you can get an adjustable spanner that covers a range around your measurement.

Tough to tell without having the knife in my hand, but you might be able to make a pair of needle-nose pliers work for this?  EDIT:  Gerleatherberman beat me to it.

Strike the Wave pliers.

It takes a standard sight adjustment 4-point bit. Perfect fit and not proprietary.

That looks like what I need! Now to find somebody that sells it. It also looks like Gerber makes a military variant of the MP600 multitool that has this implement on it. I have several MP600's, but not that one. I may be able to get the sight tool and add a multitool to my collection at the same time!  >:D.

I think that is the only possible way to get the bit you need. >:D

MP600ST. ST for Sight Tool. It is one hell of a multi tool. Wait till you see the blade and phillips driver on one. :o

I forgot I had a Leatherman MUT, and it came with some odd looking tool. One end of it looks like a wide spanner bit and I was able to adjust my knife. It did not fully accomplish what I wanted it to do. The blade is slightly off center and I was hoping adjusting the pivot would help. No luck there! Anybody know a trick to center a blade on a folding knife??

It may not be able to be perfectly centered. As long as it isn't rubbing and has little or no blade play, it should operate as it should. I've got a lot of knives in the <$50 price bracket(several brands) and don't see perfect centering on a lot of them. :)

This knife is a bit of a disappointment. I loosened the pivot a little bit, heard a bit of a snap, and now the blade does not flip open automatically unless I flick it a little  bit with my wrist . There is still a spring in the blade, it is just not as strong. Something  inside of the thing must have disconnected. I will be returning it tomorrow.  :twak: ???

Can I ask, why on earth did you loosen the pivot?

Many assisted opening knifes are off-center due to the torsion spring and torque as well as a blade lock if present.

Why did I loosen the pivot? I was trying to tweak it to make it open a bit easier with my thumb. I now see that was not a great idea!  :dunno: I was also trying to center the blade a bit, which actually worked.  It actually still opens by itself, the spring action is just not as strong. I was going to hang on to it because for a little while, I thought I may have inadvertantly improved it. However, the scales where the pivot screw is seem to have separated a bit from the lining, and even tightening the screw back does not fix it.  I am going to exchange it for another one and give it another shot. To be honest, I could actually do without the assisted opening, but I like the knifes design.
