Stripping advice
on: October 14, 2019, 09:10:47 AM
Sorry, folks, can't help it  :D ...but now that we are here, just wondering what is your favorite way to strip the coating from your knives?

I have a BK16 drop point, it's a decent knife but probably will perform and look that much better without the coating.  I have seen quite a few youtube videos about using Klean strip paint stripper to do the work, but that's nasty stuff and I've read there are numerous death each year due to the methylene chloride in the paint stripper.  I've also read a few horror story on BF about how people got 'burn' by that stuff, and a viable alternative could be "citristrip", which seems to be a little safer to use.

Unfortunately, I can't find Citristrip locally, so do anyone has other safe way to strip the powder coating besides sanding it down? :pok:

Buy paint stripper, don't eat it, don't drink it, don't sniff it, don't use it for sun block

Gloves and safety glasses should be the maximum you need  :salute:

Just trying to find the right kind is the problem.  There's paint stripper, and then there's paint stripper.  The strong stuff killed couple folks a year, and I think US EPA is trying to regulate it.  If I could find the Citristrip, I think I would be set...the only thing I could find locally is this stuff here:

https://www.dulux.com.hk/en/products/polycell-maximum-strength-paint-stripper

It didn't say it would do metal, so I am not entirely sure it will work.  Powder coat on BK is pretty heavy stuff, don't just come off too easily.

I used Nitromors to strip the coating from my Izula - worked pretty well.

For my day job as a stripper, the best advice came from Grandpa Mags. All you need is 3 tassles and a tube of glitter to win over even the toughest crowd.
