Day 10

Postie has dropped a package through the letterbox- some M2 torx machine screws for a distant future project.... a Victorinox classic does the opening honours, this one is part of the first of 2 series of wildlife tracks (orme in Italian) produced by Victorinox for Italy - the one that appealed to me was the Ghiro (an edible dormouse, now called glis glis, formerly glis edibilis) though the picture on the box looks more like an extra-terrestrial!

I really like that  :tu: i see what you mean about the ET  :D

Cheers Borgy
I had it built up  just before the rain started  ::)

Love that #3  :like:

The Siegle Chopper weighs in at 2.5 pounds or 1.15Kg, in it's kydex sheath.

Hatchet vs chopper..... Hmmm....I think both have their place, depending perhaps on the terrain and vegetation. The chopper has a more acute edge than most hatchets and might be more useful for some tasks. As usual, the skill and ingenuity of the operator probably makes the most difference to efficacy and utility.   :tu:

Day 10
The Resilience is my first Spydie.
I like the size and it feels good in hand.
Nice black Spydie

Fuzzbucket Day 10

Found an old Maxpedition (America smurf Yeah!) molle belt clip this morning and fitted it to my Hazard 4 pouch - it's brilliant clip on, clip off... I didn't rate at all years ago when fitted to its original holster, I just found it bulky, clumsy and generally just a pain in the arse to use, but on this pouch it's superb. Even with the Surge I hardly notice it.  :2tu:

...clip on, clip off, clip on clip off, clip on, clip off, clip on clip off, clip on, clip off, clip on clip off, clip on, clip off, clip on clip off, clip on, clip off, clip on clip off, clip on, clip off, clip on clip off,  clip on, clip off, clip on clip off, clip on, clip off, clip on clip off...

Nice BO Surge and repurposing of the clip.

Day 10, package opening duty

(Image removed from quote.)
Nice looking knife

Day 10:

Here is one of my oldest and most carried knives:

(Image removed from quote.)

It might just be one of my most used knives, too. This Vic Classic is over 30 years old and has been around the world. The Classic is one of those knives everyone should have with them at awl times.

In the photo above, the oft carried Classic is resting on one of my least used knives, a Siegle Chopper:

(Image removed from quote.)

Bill makes a rugged and simple knife, but one that is executed really well. This beast is a bit heavy for practical carry, but make a fine car-camping knife to use in managing big camp-tasks. It could also be pressed into to service as a wrecking bar or to 'field dress a Buick' as the saying goes. I'd get rid of it....but it's too much fun to let go and you never know when you might need to cut your way out of a burning building.....

Very nice classic, bit as far as 54mm SAKs I prefer the Rambler.

That is one vicious looking chopper.

:like:, not often you see those with wear, new picnic bench implies you have the good weather to use it, summer has begun here ::)

Cool!  I gonna get mine out and post on day 11!  :tu:

:tu:  If you like those, have you seen their Mini Archbishop?

DAY 10

I got this one fore more than 30 years  :hatsoff:
Nice knife.

Day 10

Moki Blakiston´s Fish Owl LE

The standard version of this knife has plain black micarta handles. This LE (200 pieces) adds abalone inlays. It was Moki´s knife of the year 2007. As always with Moki, fit and finish are as perfect as can be. Lightweight (44g) and only slightly larger than a SAK alox Soldier, it is an excellent knife for my Sunday carry.

I´ll have more high end Japanese folders in this challenge, all made in Seki city (like many Spyderco knives).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blakiston%27s_fish_owl

Those are some sweet handles

Day 10: My little collection of Bassett Trim-Trio tools. These were popular on the 60's and 70's, and many of them were advertising knives.  Two of these are just that, the third silver one is branded Trim-Trio and the gold colored one looks to be commemorative/presentation and came with a leather slip case.

Those are some nice looking tools.

This one's got some extra scissors though...

Interesting mod

Powernoodle Day 10

(Image removed from quote.)
Cold Steel Broken Skull.  At a mere 3.1 oz., the super thin Broken Skull sports a 4" Carpenter CTS XHP blade with DLC coating, and disappears in the pocket.  Available in 6 colors.  Eggs not included.  The Broken Skull is Powernoodle-Approved for daily carry.

Nice orange and interesting name

Great day 10 selections so far.  :tu:

Day 10.
F/S 3rd pattern.
Glock field knife #78 (modded)

Nice pair of fixies

Day 10: Another not very often (never?) seen around MTo. True Utility SmartKnife. The screw driver tip is not very user friendly, but it can be used to help open the blade, like a flipper. Frame lock, no blade play. Never really used it (what a surprise!), but I think the bottle opener and carabiner would be the most used tools.

Notice how everything is labelled, to let everyone know what tool does what...

Interesting knife tool

DAY 10

This is a knife I have long thought does not get the accolades it deserves.  TOPS Dawn Warrior.  This knife is just very comfortable doing a variety of tasks.  The jimping for two different hand positions along with the finger choil and the handle that feels great in the hand.  I still need to mod this sheath to make it a dangler, but other than that it is one of my favorites for camping.  I think I've put at least three patinas on this since I've bought it as it is one of my most used fixed blades.

I'm a bit surprised that I don't have a TOPS knife yet. I think their designs are often a bit whacky, and they don't come cheap, but they seem like a stellar company and a big addition to the knife world.

Very nice classic, bit as far as 54mm SAKs I prefer the Rambler.

The Rambler [picture needed] is just an outstanding SAK.   :tu:  I suspect that if I had acquired a Rambler first, I wouldn't have ventured into Classic territory. However, I got a Classic early on. At first I dismissed the Classic as a 'toy knife'. But with time and experience I came to really appreciate the small but potent tool set.

Often, when out fishing, I find that I don't need anything else and the Classic performs as well as anything. Given awl the options, I'd choose the Ambassador or the Executive over the Classic, however, I have several Classics, and one of them always seems to find a place in my pocket. (In a deployment setting, I had a Classic in my pocket and another in my E&E kit.)

The Executive 81 or Wenger Esquire is really a better choice. However! The Vic Classic can still do most of what "needs done" on a day-to-day basis.

Chuck Yeager made a nice choice with the Executive...bizarre as that knife is. Hey...guess what tomorrow's post will be.... :dunno:

Day 10. Felt I needed pretty much the same toolset as yesterday, but that's my only Tinker. Enter one of the half a dozen (and another on the way!) Spartans I own.

Victorinox Spartan Ruby Translucent; ASEA Brown-Boveri. It was picked up because ABB has a transformer plant in a neighboring county that I've toured (and in fact, I was going to buy one of these before we went there to carry for the trip) and part of that work (winding the cores) is outsourced to a manufacturing firm here in town.   After seeing all the ugly faded knives, I said I would never buy a translucent scaled SAK. My opinion started to change when I got my Silvertech Huntsman back when we did the Huntsman challenge last year. Not long after, I got an emerald Classic SD in a lot.  But, this is my first true translucent 91mm in my arsenal.

I can date this one too--the arrow is pointing to "11" inside the scale--so 2011?  And kudos to ABB for putting their logo on the back scale; and not the front. I guess being Swiss; they have respect to the SAK.  The thing on the left is a "soil knife" which I use for digging up thistles. I thought it would hold a good edge--but I cannot for the life of me sharpen the thing due to a steel that appears to be harder and tougher than D2. It is boron steel; which I view as only being good for structural applications.  But very tough.  Also note how little rust it got from being accidentally left outside (I lost it) for three days. Something tells me low in carbon.

I bought one here at a local pharmacy. I think I paid around $15? I think it was. Honestly, this is probably the biggest waste of money that I've had. Every knife I buy, or am given as a gift, I try to use at least one week before putting it away. I wasn't impressed. The steel is soft, not heat treated very well, the wrenches strip (and I did them on a very light job), the cutter sucks, and well, nothing works quite right.  My original plans were to give it my great-aunt as a cheap beater knife. I gave her a Victorinox Classic SD instead. At least that works and I know it does as I use them daily.

It started with some of the old store brands, like Sharp (who actually had Hattori and Sakai made knives).

Day 6: SOG Switchplier

Here is the SOG Switchplier that I bought yesterday, and immediately broke 20 minutes later. Cutting 12ga copper wire. House wiring. The stuff that normal multitools make short work of.... killed this SOG.

In the first pic, you can see that the switchplier is jammed closed. It is spring-loaded, it should not be sticking.

The second pic shows the problem, but it's hard to see. The pin is not long enough, and has popped out of the handle on the left side, stretching the frame apart. The plier head is slightly canted to the right.

The third pic shows the galling damage to the handle. This damage, plus damage to the pin itself, means the pin now pops out even under light pressure. D'oh.

Finally, here's a video that shows the problem in action:
