The Rambler [picture needed] is just an outstanding SAK.   :tu:  I suspect that if I had acquired a Rambler first, I wouldn't have ventured into Classic territory. However, I got a Classic early on. At first I dismissed the Classic as a 'toy knife'. But with time and experience I came to really appreciate the small but potent tool set.

Often, when out fishing, I find that I don't need anything else and the Classic performs as well as anything. Given awl the options, I'd choose the Ambassador or the Executive over the Classic, however, I have several Classics, and one of them always seems to find a place in my pocket. (In a deployment setting, I had a Classic in my pocket and another in my E&E kit.)

The Executive 81 or Wenger Esquire is really a better choice. However! The Vic Classic can still do most of what "needs done" on a day-to-day basis.

Chuck Yeager made a nice choice with the Executive...bizarre as that knife is. Hey...guess what tomorrow's post will be.... :dunno:

Back in NROTC, I started carrying  a classic for dress uniform pre-inspections.  I lost it at some point and replaced with a LM Micra.  The Micra was bumped when I discovered the Rambler and has been riding keychain duty every since.

You can have a picture of my Navy scale Rambler and modded (bladeless) Rambler, but to see the current one you will jave to wait until at least tomorrow.

Day 11

Inspired by Sos24, here are two of mine from Ferrum Forge.   Smaller one above is the Ferrum Forge x Massdrop(Made by WE) Falcon Winged edition, while the bigger one is the Ferrum Forge Pro Series Fortis 2.0 Flipper, I really like what they did to reduce the weight of the handle, making it a perfectly balance folder.

Day 10. Felt I needed pretty much the same toolset as yesterday, but that's my only Tinker. Enter one of the half a dozen (and another on the way!) Spartans I own.

Victorinox Spartan Ruby Translucent; ASEA Brown-Boveri. It was picked up because ABB has a transformer plant in a neighboring county that I've toured (and in fact, I was going to buy one of these before we went there to carry for the trip) and part of that work (winding the cores) is outsourced to a manufacturing firm here in town.   After seeing all the ugly faded knives, I said I would never buy a translucent scaled SAK. My opinion started to change when I got my Silvertech Huntsman back when we did the Huntsman challenge last year. Not long after, I got an emerald Classic SD in a lot.  But, this is my first true translucent 91mm in my arsenal.

I can date this one too--the arrow is pointing to "11" inside the scale--so 2011?  And kudos to ABB for putting their logo on the back scale; and not the front. I guess being Swiss; they have respect to the SAK.  The thing on the left is a "soil knife" which I use for digging up thistles. I thought it would hold a good edge--but I cannot for the life of me sharpen the thing due to a steel that appears to be harder and tougher than D2. It is boron steel; which I view as only being good for structural applications.  But very tough.  Also note how little rust it got from being accidentally left outside (I lost it) for three days. Something tells me low in carbon.

(Image removed from quote.)
I think that's one of the selling point of SAK, is its stainless-ness.  Not every knife I'd trust to be fine in my pants pocket during the hot humid summers, but SAK I can always trust to be fine.

Day 6: SOG Switchplier

Here is the SOG Switchplier that I bought yesterday, and immediately broke 20 minutes later. Cutting 12ga copper wire. House wiring. The stuff that normal multitools make short work of.... killed this SOG.

In the first pic, you can see that the switchplier is jammed closed. It is spring-loaded, it should not be sticking.
(Image removed from quote.)

The second pic shows the problem, but it's hard to see. The pin is not long enough, and has popped out of the handle on the left side, stretching the frame apart. The plier head is slightly canted to the right.
(Image removed from quote.)

The third pic shows the galling damage to the handle. This damage, plus damage to the pin itself, means the pin now pops out even under light pressure. D'oh.
(Image removed from quote.)

Finally, here's a video that shows the problem in action:

Charles.
Sorry to hear about this, I hope it could be returned or at least warranty would cover this.  Make no sense a multitool fail under light use.

Cell phone!

All my pics so far were phone pics.
It's a Motorola One Action with triple back lens. It can mimic the depth of an actual camera.
At only €180, it's a super budget phone!!

Nice knives and pics everyone!

Day 11

When filling watering cans on Monday, I noticed that the outside tap handle had worked loose, then promptly forgot about it! We’ve had rain since then, so I haven’t had cause to look at it since then, but whilst checking window seals just now, I remembered it needed tightening up, so SwissTool Spirit in hand, I used the in-line Philips to tighten the screw up. This is the shiny silver one I was “encouraged” to get during the March Madness challenge intending it to be my take to work SwissTool Spirit, but then lockdown, so it only gets an occasional outing on my belt.

I bet you enjoy Sharpening that  :D

I have a sweet spirit, and find joy in the mundane.

Actually, its not that fun.  Gotta use rat tail file to get in between the serrations.  At least that's how I do it.  Fortunately, a serrated knife stays "sharp" longer than a plain edge.  I don't think its really possible to sharpen those micro serrations.

I would not mind trying out a $30 PowerPlay or something, but the Switchplierno, just no.

I have the PowerPlay and PowerAccess, and love them both. The PowerAccess is great for pocket carry EDC. Even though it's a little rough around the edges, it's my new favorite for daily carry.

The PowerPlay I've been consistently impressed with. The file sucks, but everything else just works, and works well. I was so impressed with both of these that I snagged the Switchplier, hoping for an even lighter weight, fun, and one-handed tool for EDC... and was disappointed. SOG makes some good stuff, but this one is a stinker. And even as I say that, I want to play with it and carry it and use it. The design is just so cool, but the implementation of the pliers is a huge let down.

Fortunately SOG's warranty support has been pretty good, and they're going to let me either get a replacement, swap it for a different tool, or get credit in their store. So... I may end up with a PowerPint or PowerLitre instead. I havent' decided yet.

Charles.
