Day 14. Did very little. Rained a lot, and it was well, just a lazy day.  Thus, I chose a light, and slim knife. Only thing I did with it is crack open a new color ink cartridge.

Sears Craftsman 95228 (badge engineered Schrade USA Firebird). 3 3/4" long, 3" blade, slim, and less than two ounces. 3 3/4" closed is my sweet spot for folding knives. Not too big, not too small. Multiple cutlery companies have made lightweight folders at this size. This one is so slim, I can't tell I'm carrying it--to the point I've left it in my pants once when they got washed, and have gone to bed with it by accident multiple times.

Day 10: Paul Chen (Hanwei) Multitasker

Today I used this tool to cut some siding to patch what used to be a dog door into my garage. I put a piece of wood over the hole and then some siding to cover it, for protection against the elements. I couldn't find the actual same siding used on my garage, so I just got one piece from Lowe's and used it. Even though it's the wrong color, it will still protect my garage well enough until I can get someone out there to fix it right. (I have other siding damage from a recent tree fall, so I may just have the whole garage redone)

Here's the tool in action!

Here's the tool all opened up. Note the detachable file. This is neat, because it's diamond coated and can be used to clean up any burrs on the scissors. (Not that I've ever gotten a burr, even when cutting sheet metal)

Here is the file locked into the handle, so it can be used normally.

And finally, here are the dinky little pliers that are attached to one handle. They're only somewhat useful.

I really do like this tool. I paid like $27 last year, and it's closer to $20 now. It's made by Gerber in China, and MP600 pliers will swap in (or the scissors will swap into an MP600). That said, the OHO blade is sharp and strong, the saw is fine-toothed and narrow, which makes it remarkably good for plastic. It's a little slow in green wood, but works in dry wood fine. The phillips driver is really short and pretty soft, with a poor shape. The other internal tools are nothing to write home about. But the blade and scissors are exceptional, and worth the cost. I use this tool ALL the time, especially when doing drywall. Scissors cut the metal corner strips easily, the saw works for cutting out rectangles in drywall for outlets and switches, and the pocket clip keeps it handy on my person. I do even use the pliers occasionally, but they're very light-duty. (Even more so than Victorinox 91mm pliers).

Overall this is one of my favorite cheap tools, and I use it far more than I ever thought I would. These scissors cut damn near anything.

Charles.

One of my friends' last names is Turley, so I'm gonna have to get that TOPS for him. I've been persuing my local knife store's selection of small TOPS fixed blades online as of late. I like a small, slim fixed blade. While small, they are quite strong and capable. And, much easier to clean, especially with the TOPS stock Kydex sheath.

How's that money clip? To me, they look quite sturdy for being cheap knives; and I've seen them pretty cheaply through some promo places that have no minimums, and they can be ordered blank. I am still thinking about getting one that I will use as a money clip. I seemed to have misplaced the old Sharp Japan "Golfer" money clip knife I had, and I use the Victorinox Money Clip Ambassador as a pocket clip.
Thanks. I seem to remember that the TOPS came in one of those altoid sized survival tins though I could be wrong.
I don’t use the clip for money, I have only used it as a pocket clip or to slip itwb and for that it’s fine.
It’s a no name knife that came as a gift with another knife purchase years ago.
Really like the Sears.  :tu:

Day14
Since today is the 245th birthday of the United States Army and I didn't do an army knife photo for Memorial Day I present to you the Plumb 1917 Bolo.

I bought this knife in the early 90s, even took it camping a few times when I was young, stupid and didn't realize the collectability of old military knives.

And yes that is the 1980s Army cold weather sleeping bag it is sitting on...Simple Story I was at the Houston Airshow in 2014. We needed chairs, picnic blanket or something and there was everybody was sold out and I saw this at the Junior ROTC fundraiser surplus booth
Very nice, and a good story to go with it too!

This knife has a stout 3in blade with a couple of interesting features that are not normally found on many modern single blade folders
- The knife will also open using a blade notch designed to work like an Emerson Wave, thumb stud, as forward flipper, or flick of wrist
- blade notch doubles as bottle opener
- 1/4” bit driver built into handle.  It actually holds the bit well and works pretty good
- Glass breaker. The screw that holds the reversible pocket clip is a tungsten carbide glass breaker, a potential life saving tool in the event of an auto accident or fire.
- The blade jimping is sized to also be used as wire stripper
I think USAMB really does know how to add value as a retailer, all these cool anodization and engraving work do have great appeal.

Agree and most of the time they sell the knives for the same price as other places making the custom anodization free.

DAY 14
Took this pic on my way out of work today after getting everything off my belt I was wearing from previous jobs in the day.  Whenever I have to hike into a utility right of way that has gone from one mountain to the next (especially when I'm the only one in the area working on the weekend), I take one of two knives which are setup similar in use (ESEE 5 and 6), and I throw a pack on my back with the basics of first aid/food/water just in case something happens and it takes a while to find me.  (These are areas where cellphone coverage just doesn't reach).  So I thought I'd take a picture of one of these setups on my way out of work.  Today I was carrying my ESEE 6 while following a line down through a valley between mountain tops, way off the beaten path.   I added TKC sheaths to both of my ESEE knives and love 'em.  Also, I keep a smaller RAT II folder made of D2 steel in this setup.
Cool setup!
If you do have to work or go regularly off grid, would you consider getting one of those PLB?  I know a lot of thru hikers would carry one and it has proven to be useful number of times.

Day 15.
What do you think of this TOPS?  I have the same knife, but felt it is more for very light chore carried in-pocket or neck.

$20 for a scissors tool that could cut thru most anything, a detachable file, somewhat decent saw and a usable knife--Charles, you do have an eye for picking this gems.  :D

The knife is actually really good too. I'd really like to see it on an MP600.  I mean, it's a simple addition, add the blade on one side and the pocket clip on the other. Yes it increases the thickness, but it's totally worth it for the clip and OHO. Of course, the liner lock would mess up Gerber's normal MP600 locking mechanism.

Hrm, I might have to buy another one of these and sneak into the community college to use the milling machines...

Charles.

I agree. It’s only supposed to be for an emergency. It’s plenty sturdy enough given the size, and that’s the weakness, it’s not big enough to be much more than a sharp edge. I have never used it seriously. I think you’re supposed to be able to craft a make do handle which would probably increase the usability.

Happy B-day to Poncho's little one!  May you always see rainbow on a rainy day, and know that pot of gold has always been in your heart.

Strider SMF.   No doubt it is a robust knife with a very thick stock (3/16 or 4.7mm) and a very large generous choil and handle.  However, the fit and finish left something to be desired for.

DAY 15

This will be the last Ka-Bar I post as I havnt got any more

This ones pretty special to me as I wanted it for so long and it took a while to save up for it. It’s a Commemorative Ka-Bar that pays tribute to Eugene Sledge and his book With the Old Breed , which is regarded as one of the finest accounts of combat ever written. A large part of HBO’s The Pacific  Mini series was based on this book.

The box artwork depicts the landings on Peleliu by Matt Hall which I have a full size print of as well.

The sheath is signed by two veterans who served with Sledge , R V Burgin and T I Miller both of which have sadly passed away.

The knife is No. 377 of 1945. They have been sold out for sometime now

The Ganzo Firebird FH61 is high-end daily carry knife masquerading as a Chinese budget folder.  With a street price of only $32 shipped, the FH61 combines tanto and clip point stylistic elements with D2 blade steel, carbon fiber scales, a ball bearing pivot with effortless flipper deployment, and a deep carry clip.

Day 15: A small multitool, seems to be a few decades old. Bought it for €1 at a flea market. Never used it, just like the scales and tool set. The scissors are decent and the little awl is cute. The logo in the blade looks like a sword with a banner hanging from the pommel. Anyone knows this brand?

Day 15
My 2 Bucks, one the 110 I carried for about a year before realising it was way too much knife for my day to day needs. Dad always had a knock off version of this for cutting baling twine, alkathene pipe etc,  so an emotional attachment there for sure.  The 371 was bought as it was a clearance item online , nice enough but just doesn't light me on fire the way the Remington Stockman does

I think this surely is YMMV thing.  If we go back 10-15 years ago, I can see how the 'trinity' represent some of the best tolerance/design/execution in US folder market, and demand a high premium, but given we are now in this golden era of knife hobby, whether these brands can continue to demand the same premium as it once did may need some rethinking.
