Day 14 (ice cream Sunday)

Ruike is owned by Fenix flashlight, and like its flashlight counterpart, I think it aims to bring value to customers.  I pick this knife up when I was travelling to Miami last year, and think it's a solid tool fairly priced at $50.  The whole body is stainless steel, but internally milled out to lighten the knife and balance perfectly at index finger.  The lines are thoughtfully designed, and with an innovative frame lock with additional lock to secure it.  Detent is decent so the knife stored in chassis securely, but will flip open authoritatively.  The drop shut is smooth and blade center perfectly.

What knives in your stash would you consider a value buy?

That is a nice looking knife.  When it comes to Ruike, I more commonly think of their multifunctional knives.  I recently learned of their connection to Fenix Flashlights, which I do like.

Day 13:

A somewhat eventful day here. We were hit by strong, sustained winds starting around noon. One of the bamboo canes that supports the anti-bird netting over my vegetable patch got snapped. I used this Breeden to make a few cuts into a fresh cane and snap it to length.

(Image removed from quote.)

So, I'm standing there, feeling pleased to have had the Breeden on my belt and put to good use. A great knife made for hard use.

The wind is gusting up over 40mph. (Reports of over 60mph up at higher altitudes.)

I'm standing there thinking, "with these winds it would be a terrible time for a wildfire." Sure enough...in the next 15 minutes...the sky begins to fill with smoke...... Maybe I smelled the smoke at some subconscious level?  :dunno:

Anyway, with strong winds coming out of the South, and a wildfire now raging...directly to my South...there is a chance that I may have to evacuate. The house is filled with the smell of smoke and visibility outside is really low. The fire went from about 10 acres to 400 acres in a matter of 2.5 hours.

If I do have to evacuate, I probably won't be able to continue the challenge. If my house burns down, I definitely won't be able to continue!

I'll let you guys know how it goes.  :tu:

Those are bad news  :-(
I'm wishing you and your beloved, and all fellow citizens, all the best to stay unaffected by this.
I'm sure you're well prepared for such a situation. Stay safe buddy  :salute:

Btw... solid little fixie that  :tu:

Day 14
Today's knife is one of my oldest and longest owner, bought it 24 odd years ago from local farm supplies store. No idea of brand , carried for 4 or so years,  then on my webbing in the army . One handed opening  before  I knew that was  a thing,
sculpted finger grips are comfortable and keep the knife secure even when wet. Aluminum body with stainless blade, taken a flogging and keeps on keeping on, a well spent $20

This is a stainless damascus made by Damasteel. The pattern is called Heimskringla. IIRC this is the same damascus that Victorinox use.

I like the piggyback arrangement, definitely different.  I always meant to ask is the little piece of leather at the bottom help to draw the knife out?(instead holding the sheath which could be slashed thru?)

I don't know whether it is accurate, but I have a feelling many American fixed blade during those era are all heavily influenced by Marble's Ideal, and many knives would adopt a fuller one way or another as a feature.  Though I wonder how practical given some of them are vastly different from the original fuller design.

True, it was a common feature, there are quite a few knives with full flat and sabre grinds too. Wherever  the influence came from it has certainly lasted, Buck still use it to this day.

Thanks, SOS.

The winds have calmed down a bit and shifted direction a few points (if I can read the lean of the trees correctly.). I'm feeling slightly more optimistic; however, I suspect we'll be sleeping very lightly this evening.

Hope things get better soon! Stay strong, stay safe! Good luck, bro!

Day 14: A very small knife, good for office duty or some light cutting tasks. Browning Minnow. Comes in different handle colours. Liner lock, OHO left or right. The jimping and handle shape give a very strong grip. Don't like the blade cuttout. It looks good, granted, but can easily get filled with dirt.

Fuzz Day 14

A simple unfussy Spanish knife I picked up years ago. Missing presumed dead until recently. I really like this knife, it's a working knife that you're not afraid to use and abuse, the ergonomics are superd especially if working with gloves and the olive wood scales have darkened and aged beautifully.

Day 14:

The wind shifted to the West and the smoke cleared out. I'm not sure what is going on with the fire--there is a shocking lack of updated information--but we were able to remain at home last night. (Other people down wind were evacuated.) So, no need to 'bug out' at the moment. If we do, this Dan Stucky folder will be stuck in my pocket. It has proven itself on a few adventures already....

Today I'm carrying a Cold Steel original tanto Voyager in VG-1 steel.  Though not nearly as robust as the current Voyager models, I prefer the classic look and thin profile of the original flavor.

How do you like that Martins? The handle looks weird, but it's very ergonomic, right? If it's anything like mine, it's razor sharp!

Yes i like the shape but it's a bit on the small side, it's a 2014 LE so i'm not bothered, it's a shelf queen  :tu: it is sharp though

Nix, I hope the wind dies down and the fire ends soon - can’t imagine what it must be like to be under threat of evacuation and worse..... best wishes from this side of the pond.

Day 14

I’ve been using this ultra-light belt carry tool kit today to tighten up screws in my kitchen which mysteriously seem to work their way loose over time! The extra bit sets mean I rarely encounter a fastener that can’t be tightened with this kit on hand - certainly more compact than my many full sized tool sets, and more versatile than the Victorinox SwissTool Spirits I’ve come to recently. This is an early version of the Charge Tti which I had a real job tracking down and doubtless cost me more than was sensible especially adding the accessories, but it has come in very handy when travelling or on holiday and needing to make running repairs. Doubtless it’ll help crack open a beer or two later after I’ve re-oiled the garden table and washed my MTBs!
