Fascinating blades and stories, everyone!

Day 28

After many years of not seeing the appeal of the Pioneer, I am now a confirmed aloxoholic! No soldiers here, just Pioneers, the standard, a poor man’s black beauty, a lovely grass green from Berlin, the year knives and the Nespresso knives (though given that they lack the lanyard/key ring attachment, are they still Pioneers, or are they civilian soldiers!!??) - it’s the colours that attract me most to the alox series, and that o-so-useful awl - it just doesn’t get smeared in adhesive when opening packages like the blade does.

They do tend to pop up from time to time , it can either mean the knife has been dismantled or the person building the knife re-inserted it to make adjustments. Mine is the latter as all marks are the same and uniform and the pommel is peened correctly
:tu: They do look the same.
So it’s a war time knife that’s been in storage and stamped post war is that right?

:like: a lot of nice ones in there Rizio  :tu:

Day 28
Today is a Lifu Multitool.  Ot is the most extensive tool, but made decently enough.  One of the things I really liked about this tool was the 1/4 bit adapter and how the case held a few bits.  It rode in my bicycle jersey pocket are wedge pouch on several extend bike rides.

(Image removed from quote.)

This tool also has a story behind it.  One of my additional duties (in reality a great boondoggle) for about a year in the Navy was a contingency task force for shuttle launches.  I was in Florida for STS-133 and because it was delayed, I had to some spare time and rented a bicycle to go riding.  It was at the bicycle shop that I purchased the Lifu.  What did stink was because of the long delays, when it actually launched, I was on another operation so my alternate got to go.

Shame you missed it, neat MT, looks capable

Yes that’s it exactly and re-issued. I think it was some time in the 50’s. A little later the Admiralty ordered a new batch from Wilkinson sword but they are very rare

If you look in Ron Flooks book it has quite a lot about them.

I also have a third Dagger that will feature on here before the end of the month, this too has an interesting story and is also featured in Ron’s book.

Nice knives and pin.  I love the simplicity of the Moras.

It was a shame that I missed the launch, but I had done two others and it was the other officer’s first, so he deserved it.  I think what bothered me most was I had to do all the work for prior to the event and then got stuck with 12 hour night shifts.

DAY 28
A couple of Spyderco folders.  Resilience and Tenacious.  It's so easy to put a razor's edge on these.  I've not quite warmed up to shape of these blades for carrying EDC for everyday tasks.  They are really easy to flip open because of the big thumb hole design, though.  I think these are probably the best choice (and the reason I bought them) if you have to be in a sketchy area and the knife laws allow a folder so long as it isn't spring assisted.  Very light, large blade profile, and easy to deploy.

Powernoodle Day 28

New Opinel No. 10. Ready for biscuit gravy, drywall dust and squirrel blood.

How does the laminate work D2 on bottom and 14c28 on the top or vice versa?

Edited for accuracy:  its composite blade, with D2 on the cutting edge.

Very nice collection, I gonna admit, I too am an Aloxoholic and it is crazy how many colors are there for collection.

I don't know about the sketchy area, but I did read an impressive story about Spyderco vs mountain lion many years ago.  The spyder hole sure is easy for deployment.

Powernoodle Day 28

(Image removed from quote.)New Opinel No. 10. Ready for biscuit gravy, drywall dust and squirrel blood.

Its like a D2 sandwich.  D2 is in the center, like the peanut butter and jelly, and the 14C28N is the bread.  When ground, it reveals a D2 edge.  Kershaw does it allegedly to lower the cost of using a full D2 blade, but I'm not really buying that.  Normally a laminate is used to give you a hard cutting edge and a "soft" spine that won't break as easily.  I have no idea how they get that wavy pattern on there.  That pattern is exactly the same on every D2/14C28N Leek.
Actually the blade is not a laminate but a composite. Here´s a description I found at onestopknifeshop.com
Quote
The wavy copper line you see running through the blade is the brazing that permanently joins the razor-like Sandvik 14C28N cutting edge to the tough D2 spine.
This explains why they all look the same, the parts are machined like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

Wow!   So in the game of Spyder, Bird, Cat...    1. bird eats spyder   2. cat eats bird  3. spyder bites cat.   LOL.
Horrible what happened to that boy.  So many of those situations end differently.  What a tough kid!
