MTO Unleashed!

Day 8

My SAKs with Mountains

Left to Right: Rocky Mountain National Park (came on a Camper but reside on a Mountaineer), Yosemite on a Super Tinker and Matterhorn on a Climber.

I love the mountains almost as much as the ocean which is saying a lot for a Sailor.  I grew up near the Adirondack Mountains and did my first backpacking/mountain climbing trip at 15.

The Rocky Mountain National park is my favorite because of personal experience.  On my 2004 drive across the USA, I intentionally went a little out of my way to drive the Trail Ridge Road through the Rocky Mountain National Park.  It was a beautiful drive and I highly recommend it, especially if you love the mountains but do not have the physical abilities required for hiking and climbing.

Yup, that's a Traxxas Rustler 1:10 2WD, with Stampede wheels and tires and a small lift by repositioning the lower shock mounts. Also a 15T pinion gear to maintain power wheelies.

I'm not racing it, I just run it in the yard for the dog to chase, and sometimes I take it to the elementary school and play with it on all the concrete and gravel there. It's one of my "Bored AF, Corona purchases". I ended up with the Rustler instead of the stampede because I wanted soemthing less likely to flip, but went with the stampede tires and small lift so it runs better through tall grass. Compromise, but it's working for me.

Charles.

Nice one!

I've been looking at a lot of 4WD options as of late. Gravel drives, steep inclines, and complete lack of level land or a large paved area makes RC use outdoors a hassle; and useless if the model is 2WD. Tamiya has some nice stuff in the CC-01 family, but most requires assembly (doesn't bother me), paint (I suck at that) and purchase of most electrics (which getting good ones is the same cost as the model).   I like the old XMODs Evolution trucks, as their more compact scale fits in well. A 4WD hop-up kit was offered, and there are loads of third party hop-up kits that make it stronger and more powerful than the Kyosho Overlands (I have one, needing a ton of repair) which despite representing trucks and SUVs are NOT 4WD! But secondhand market prices on those are nuts these days; and seem to be going up like crazy. What used to be $20-30 is now nearing the $100 I paid for the Kyosho 3-4 years ago.

My current 4WD RC is an XMODs from when Radio Shack briefly revived the brand in 2013? at a larger scale. I think it was (and right before all Radio Shacks around here minus the one franchised location closed). The 4WD was an add-on kit, which I bought with it. I found the piece that allows you to use a 9.6V rechargeable battery (vs. the 6 AAs it used before); and am going to get it out once I get around to getting the battery and installing it.

Day 8. Kershaw Leek base model, Sandvik 14C28N blade. I have to admit, I am pretty impressed with this steel. Seems to hold an edge better and is definitely as tough as 420HC.

DAY 8
Schrade SCHF2SM.  I'm not a big fan of Schrade in general on their fixed blade line, but I have always loved this knife.  Hollow handled knife made from a solid piece of 1070.  It originally comes with the whole knife painted in gunboat gray.  I stripped the blade portion and put a patina on it.  Even though they knurled the handle portion it is still kind of slippery if your hands are wet, so I added some Talon gun grip tape to the handle and cap.  I keep a small fishing and fire kit in the handle, some first aid stuff in the pouch and an Arkansas stone on the end of the sheath.

Looks like a pretty decent knife, even as I am very critical (not only due to country of origin; but also quality of knives--most of these newer Schrades I've bought have been utter crap).

An older model (back when Schrade was still an American company building products in New York, and not a holding company in Tennessee) you might want to look it is the Schrade Walden H-15. It was their take on the Mark I and has a 5 1/4" blade.

My Slash is one bad hombre. Motor and pinion are important. But suspension adjustment can be key for wheel spin and trac control. Granted, tall grass is it's achilles heel

Day8
Today we are back at the bench mat with an old favorite; a Gigand Guardian C designed by Fred Carter.

As you can probably tell this was a regular edc knife for me from 2001-2006ish. The knife is a triangular blade with a clip profile and flat back. The sheth is a boot/clip style wit a unique magnetic retention that works most of the time.
The reason I stopped carrying it was eventually the plastic started to wear out. The handle is verry banged up but the real issue is the shieth broke where the clip attaches, and the compartment for the magnets is comming open a little.
Truth is I like this knife and after dozens of tries have not found another small dagger I like. Shure this is a piercing affair that cant cut as well, but its size shape and weight made it a joy to carry.

Gerber did/does make a version of this knife with a tab retention that lockes into the thumbramp guard on the spine side. (I just never got around to buying one)

And since I am doing Gigand here are a pair of Bodyguard tantos. I'm not shure but these may have been my 1st liner locks, also long time carry. All 3 knives have Aus-8A steel for the blades. The folders have a some sort of cast aluminium alloy handle.

I got all 3 together as a bulk lot with about 40 other knives from a store closing.
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.
But for now I'm just a lost jack of trades with neither mastery nor home. ~NoaIsumi

Day 4: Sharp 380

Today I used my grandfather's knife to slice up a mango, and then to eat it. I love the long little blade for mangos, it lets me slice it into quarters and then work the meat away from the pit with the narrow blade. It also skins the mango nicely.  I remember my grandfather using this knife as a kid, and after both grandparents died I laid claim to it as the only thing I wanted from the estate. It was the only thing left that meant anything to me, and mom and her sister had no interest in a little old pocket knife.

It's not anything special, it's a Sharp brand knife, model 380, sold by K-Mart back in the day.

Charles.
It is special, that's the only thing from the estate that reminds you of him.  I have a knife that was given to me by Grandpa, and I plan to pass it down to my little guy someday.

Never been, but it looks wonderful from all these google photos.  If you have the chance, I would strongly recommend to pay a visit to Grand Teton NP, the old joke about whether there is Ansel Adams first or the parking lot first must be true.

I used to race the Kyosho AWD before going into 1/10 touring, and things have been leaps and bounds better than those days.  Cody, if you are looking smaller scale truck, I'd suggest to check out the Kyosho Mini z Toyota 4Runner.  It's a 4x4 crawler and what I like most about Kyosho Mini Z series is their really realistic body without any painting, and the options to upgrade is practically limitless.  Here is a video by Amain:

Day 9

If anyone loves Scandi grind on a folder, Enzo is a pretty decent brand for making such knives.  Below is Birk which has both lock and unlockable version for UK, the Borka above has a really stiff backspring, and though I like the idea of 'stout' scandi folder, the spring is so stiff that it's basically a two hand opening knife.

Belated Happy Birthday Steve! More great knives and photos everyone!

Day 9

This one is my only fixed “knife” as such, it’s a Georgian (that’s the country not the state! ) dagger/short sword I was presented in the mid 1990s by the then president, Edouard Shevardnadze. A staggering amount of work goes into the scabbard, and the blade definitely holds an edge, but a little impractical as a modern day edc even if it was one back in the day in the trans Caucusus!

Please do, I think most photographer friends I have talked to always regret not planning enough time in Teton.  Most people know about the Mormon Row house, but definitely plan a sunrise or sunset at Schwabacher Landing, it's magical.

The handle on that is almost an optical illusion.  Looks like leather and wood at the same time.  Beautiful.

Thanks, it does have a rather lovely velvety feel to it. I think it's just exceptionally dark curly birch... either that or its walnut, but maybe taken from the football.

Spyderco Dragonfly Tattoo

One of my favorites and not only because of the tattoo.

Beautiful knife! I had a chance to get one, second hand, for €50. It took me a couple of days to decide on buying it, but by then it was gone...
