New for 2020 - PowerAccess Assist MT
on: January 23, 2020, 03:44:39 PM
The Power Access Assist MT was on display at the 2020 SHOT Show. It features 21 tools, assisted opening blades, compound leverage and more. It come in the stone washed finish or black oxide.

SOG's 2020 multitool offering is coming in slightly before the re-brand. We firmly believe in the Compound Leverage mechanism featured in this tool, as used previously- but we are still hoping to see more finessing.

Grant really enjoys the previous version of this tool, and we're looking forward to getting our hands on this one for review and testing. I am going to hold my opinion on the tool until we try it out. But here are some photos we took at the show!

Price: $100 USD

Black Oxide:

What is the steel on those? The stonewash on a MT would make me worry about rust. Heck I sometimes get light surface rust on my Charge, used in dirty and wet environments and not cleaned fully. The real world of the multitool.

Interesting to have assisted knife on MT, just hope it is an easy one hand closing for the blade.

Just saw a Protech and Arcform collab new auto knife on YT, the highlight is the smooth easy closing.

I like this better than the original PowerAccess. At least you can get the big tools open one handedly. I just remain skeptical of SOG's stuff when it looks basically the same as what they have been offering lately.

It looks kinda like the locktab of the Leatherman free p4 which is easy close one handed. Should at least be easier than their older powerassist

The fine screwdriver is interesting. They’ve squeezed a lot into the tool and styling looks neat.  :like:
But the thumb stud on the saw will snag when cutting.  ???
I originally was a fan of the geared pliers (have the PP, PPP and PowerAssist), until I realized how it limits the opening of the jaws. Still undecided whether this trade-off justifies the increased gripping power.  :dunno:

It looks really nice. I like the clean, plain handles.

It looks a little thick.
The long tools look a little short.
The rescue hook seems to protrude too much.
The thumb-studs are in slicing/cutting paths. Especially for the saw, which is already short.

As nice as it looks, I think I'll wait for 2021. :pok:

...and someone needs to tell me where the index mark is for the angle guide on the gear guard.  :dunno:

And please tell me I’m not mad, and that there’s nothing that folds inside those outer scale ‘pockets’, that they’re just styling? (Adding thickness)  :dunno:

Mmm, the more I look at the pics, the more I’m wondering about this MT...

Do they house the assist mechanism?

Is it just the knives that are assisted, or are the saw and hook also assisted?

Wow, I didn't realize that the implements aren't even in those channels! Lame. Added thickness just for an assist mechanism does not seem like a good trade. Plus, the thumb studs are extra long to clear the channels. Goofy

And another thing! A plain edge, a serrated, and a strap cutter is triple redundant and a waste of space. Do either a PE or CE and strap cutter, then you have room for scissors or a file. But SOG makes pretty bad scissors and smooth files so maybe that's why they have so many blades. Where is Picard?

I believe it’s two assisted blades and the two tools you’ve mentioned are also assisted. We’ll get one, and Grant is looking forward to reviewing it. He really enjoyed its predecessor.

The BO is nice looking. I was wondering more about the wrench and bits as I am currently looking at those items.

I recently picked one up, as it looks a bit like a poor man’s Leatherman Charge+. Now, that isn’t a bad thing, but if you’re going to aim for one of the best tools on the market, you’d better have the chops to back yourself up. SOG at one time did make tools similar in quality to Leatherman. Similar.

Now, I do have a YouTube channel that is in need of some new content, maybe by next weekend. I’ve gathered up quite a few tools and gadgets that deserve my very unique take on them, and now my SOG PowerLock looks to be due for a review, but only after a few changes so it better suits my preferences.

Yes, it is. It sounds like a model of electric wheelchair, and one prone to breaking down.

How about an unassisted version? It would much thinner. :pok:

To make it appeal to people with lower standards? :pok:

Honestly,  I looked this one up in youtube. The guy commented on how cool the assisted opening and skull on the sheath are, and all I could think of was the Z-Hunter and all those gas station knives with skulls and assisted opening.

I just got mine in the mail earlier. You’d think that a newer designed tool over the PowerLock 2.0 would be an improvement. It is absolutely not the case with the PowerAccess Assist. The “assisted” tools have additional built for the opening, but, they don’t open and “spring” open consistently. The main blade usually ends up getting clumped up with the other adjacent tools, and it is an abysmal mess. I specifically wanted this to have quick access to a primary blade, and was hoping for a Wave+ type experience with assisted opening. I was sorely mistaken.

I bought two.I feel bad for myself.I wanted to like it so much but after a few days use it has issues.blades sticking, then opening and sticking open.clumping, broken finger nail syndrome.the locking tab on one side constantly sticks open so the tool you want won't lock unless you manually close the lock.it is improving but....

I can now add to my last post that the issue I had with the locking mechanism sticking is now gone.it needed use, oiling and more use.it now works just as well as the other side.some break in time is what it needed.annoying at first for sure but the payoff is a smooth operating tool.it really is a nice tool to use....now.

This tool is anything but boring - it has a lot of gadget-factor fun going for it.  The geared plier, spring-loaded implements, thumb studs, and the bit holder clamp at the front are all great features.  I hope they eventually improve upon the QC and overall design which is consistent with their rebrand philosophy.

Here are the changes which would make it great (even if it makes the price go up a bit):

1)  Replace large belt cutter with large file
2)  Replace tiny flat blade screwdriver with small scissors (this MT itself is too large to use on tiny screws for corrective lens IMHO)
3)  Add replaceable wire cutter inserts like Leatherman, Gerber and others
4)  Incorporate small belt cutter/clamshell opener at tip of serrated blade like Leatherman Charge
5)  Offer a shiny mirror polished finish like original SOG Power Assist
6)  Thicker metal for body and implements
7)  Add 2nd small magnet to bit holder clamp at front of tool
8)  Make the plain blade tip less pointy - that thin tip is waiting to break off.
9)  Get rid of the 1mm gap between the two outer layers of sheet metal on both sides of each handle (unless there is a good reason for that gap).
