It is very frustrating, I’m sorry to hear about your problems Fuzzbucket.

You can pretty much purchase any old Leatherman tool and be certain to get a great one, I just purchased a brand new Mini and a new in box Sideclip and both of them are flawless. It’s too bad the new ones are such a lottery.

I dunno about Leathermans qc on newer products, what i heard and read on those new limited edition Charges, i think they didnt even had QC on those finish was awful on tools and wobbling scales and etc... i think its awful when your paying extra for those and finish is so awful.

I did have all 3 gen Waves and i still think 2nd gen Wave is best of them. Maybe i need to give my Wave+ change after my challenges are over.
I own Surge too but it doesnt just feel so good as Wave in quality after all

Interesting what kinda luck everyone has had. I can't think of any LMs that I purchased new having any issues, from jaw alignment to tool lockup, even my two $7 LM Revs were great and I figured if any had been lacking on QC it would have been those.

Maybe my luck gets all used up on my tools because I never seem to win at anything else. To this day I still haven't won anything from the McDonald's Monopoly game.  Ex. no free food. ever. And I usually end up being the first or second to pick at white elephant games.  :dunno:

Sorry to hear it Fuzzy :ahhh I have been fortunate with my LM purchases as well but most of the time I try to buy second hand if possible :salute: that way if things are a big screwy then I don't feel as bad about it :D

Old school has way less to no problems even if they are quite older. It is usually from abuse if they have any problems :salute:

Sorry to hear this Fuzz
I joked that the new emblem would be a way of differentiating between original LM and newer LM

But even so, I still wouldn’t buy new leathermans here in the UK, their prices are beyond a joke.

Also, just a wee observation, but the new boxes have a cheapness about them too. It's not the sort of packaging you would expect a quality item to come in.

Indeed. I got £50 off, but it still cost a hundred squids.

The overall quality was crap. Scissors were dismal. And, yes, the grinds were atrocious.

I'm no longer buying new LM products. Full stop.

Vintage Supertool? You betcha.

Vintage PST? Absolutely.

Swisstool?  Why.....yes.
I do believe I have AWL the LM MTs I will need, and consider myself fortunate at this point for not having ang issues.

I here you about the SwissTool, my Spirit I acquired NEW a few months ago is an amazing MT. A work of art, high polish and perfect form and fit for a NEW in box tool.

Now looking for a good used OHT and ST200 is prices are right.

A SwissTool as well.

So sorry that LM let you down Fuzzy!
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I recently bought a new BO Wave+ that had several lock engaging issues, amongst other issues. LM also needs to look at the scraping issues on the plier heads of the Wave and Surge. I like the worn look on BO tools, but the coating shouldn’t completely disappear after simply opening the tool a few times. Ridiculous

This may not be possible.. In comparison between let's say, rebar and ST300, wave and surge. Wave and Surge will always have the issue where the pliers scrape on the handles as they are fitted in just nice with very low tolerance. That is also what makes them a better driver as they will not have any handle play when putting in higher torque when twisting.

Reducing the plier thickness ever so slightly to create clearance, while maintaining plier tang thickness, would correct the issue without affecting tool integrity with other functions, so long as the tangs were properly parallel to the plier's central axis

That slight reducing will definitely help. Generally I think having a on spot thickness of the pliers should not be an issue for them. But the handles will be a big issue. After folding and heat treat, the internal space can be wildly inconsistent. Some very tight, some can even rattle with the pliers. Then, we are back to square one again.

Surge scissors lock differently, after you extend scissors tool then bring the non stationary arm towards the tip and it should lock, unless you already tried that then nevermind. I think all surges rattle a bit as well.

Amazing what you can achieve with a used fiver in a brown envelope sent to the LM QC dept with a note asking them to send you the last one made on the Friday afternoon before the coronavirus shutdown.
