I managed to purchase a Large Vantage Alaskan guide and would you believe it I missed the postman  I’ve sat at home for the last 3 months but today I helped a friend put a fence up and my wife and daughter were both at work. It’s not all bad as I can pick it up from 7am tomorrow morning from the sorting office which is only about a 3 minute drive. It’s just driving me crazy as It’s only half a mile away and I can have it till the morning
So excited about this one I’ve wanted one for ages.

Pics to follow tomorrow

I've got a 301 Stockman that was supposed to arrive today, but the postal service finally admitted this evening it was going to be late.

USPS leaves a lot to be desired these days.  They complain about volume and COVID, but UPS and FedEx seem to be coping.  Also, I understand if things take a little longer, but I don't understand why we can't get accurate delivery estimates...

Here are a couple of 112's that were crafted in the old Custom Shop in 2004,just a year before Buck moved to Post Falls ,Idaho.

Beautiful!          :like:

I'm partial to the traditional Bucks--the 112, and the 110--but grabbed chance to get a limited edition Vantage when it popped up. The new knife arrived today.

First....my fancy Vantage came in some fancy packaging: a small bag (like a Benchmade bag) inside a nice storage box with a magnetic closure. This was fun and added a 'special' feel, but I'm guessing I helped fund the new wrapping.

The Vantage itself is really nice. S35V steel blade and natural micarta scale inserts. It is very nicely made. And feels great in hand.  :tu: I generally don't like clips on my knives, but I think I may keep this one on. It doesn't feel obtrusive. I may change my mind with use, but for now, I like it.

I have a small Vantage and really like it. Another solid knife that is easy to carry and use. My experience with the small Vantage is probably the reason I was open to picking up a large Vantage. Like the smaller version, the large Vantage has nice thick scales, creating a substantial handle that feels like it will provide good control. One of my complaints with the Spyderco PM2 (a knife of similar size to this Vantage), is that the scales are too thin and flat. (Keep in mind, I love the PM2.) Both the small and large Vantage provide a nice handle.

For comparison, I had the new Vantage photo'd in a line-up of the usual suspects:

Buck 110, Buck Vantage, Buck 112

I think the Vantage is a nice compromise between the Ranger and 110. I like the blade length which has the same edge length as a Victorinox 111mm main blade. I also like the blade shape...sort of a long clip that dreams of being a drop point. I haven't used it yet, but given my experience with the little Vantage, I expect it will be a good cutter.

Last of my initial observations: this is technically a flipper design. I'm not a big fan of flippers, but I think Buck has executed this really nicely. The flipper lever is usable but not too obtrusive. More importantly for me, the 'Spydie hole' is adequate for OHO opening with my thumb with bare hands and a thin glove. When wearing a heavy Winter glove I had to use the flipper lever.

Will the Vantage replace the 112 or 110 in my heart......?

Nooooo.....

For me the Ranger and the 110 are great knives that have found a sweet spot in knife design. However.....right off the bat, the large Vantage feels like a home run. If you prefer a more modern knife design, I think you could do far worse than consider a Vantage: it checks awl the right boxes.  :tu:
