Has anyone considered either a 4LN or 4WR Vise Grip (Petersen, not Irwin)? Either of those or even the larger (but not large) 6LN. Knipex makes a model similar to the 6LN. Has anyone ever tried the Knipex model? I'd like to, but as I already have two of the 6LN Vise Grips, it would be redundant (not that "redundant" has ever stopped any of us!)

I had ordered the 5inch Knipex pliers the other day and they arrived today. I was surprised how small and light weight they are. The plan was not to have these for my carry, but rather for the tool box. There are always hard to reach spots somewhere, and these are perfect for those areas.

I just checked though, and they fit perfectly into my EDC pouch. So might as well carry them along with the Ranger. Will take some photos tomorrow.

I have Irwin 5WR Vise Grips. The wire cutters aren't very good, there's too much gap between the anvil and blade. Plus they are a bit weighty for limited functionality. They seem fine for pliers and the locking function, though.

I don't have any experience with Petersen or the other tools you mentioned

I bought one to see what they are like.  It's a good quality tool, but tiny. Way too small for my (largish) hands, so promptly gifted to the missus (she thinks it is OK for her more delicate hands).

Do you mind posting a comparison pic of it fully open compared to Wave, Crunch, Spirit pliers or similar?

I only have a Spirit to compare. The Cobras are open to their specified max opening, 28mm for pipe. The Spirit is open all the way, not really usable that far open

Not seen this thread, but it reminded me of when I worked with a heating engineer for a year or so a few years back and regularly carried these to help assemble/dismantle domestic boilers and drain down CH systems - the small size of these were spot on, and sat on my belt which is why they stayed so clean - only thing missing is a butterfly radiator key which lived in my pocket (now sits in the bathroom cabinet as my bathroom radiator is the system high point and is the only one which needs periodic bleeding).

Even paired up with a multitool with pliers, these would be handy. Very often you have to hold a nut and need two spanners. If you want them you'll find a way to convince and justify to yourself...  :D

An old video, but still an impressive demo of the grip strength of the Cobra 125mm, from 5:45:


I carry one of them in my EDC bag, with a 111mm Outrider. The Rebar rides along, it has a handy needle nose, it can cut wire and has more drivers, a serrated blade and a file.
