Front flippers, what's your take on them?
on: July 08, 2021, 01:55:52 PM
I've known these for quite some time but only recently did I start to feel the urge to get one. I like the concept of an opening mechanism that can be virtually invisible and still flick a blade open in a flash.

Any comments/recommendations? Feel free to share your experiences with them, pics welcomed (and encouraged).

  :salute:

I have one or 2 and while they are easier to deploy they just aren't my cup of tea  I prefer OHO blades that have a hole to open them :D

I am ambivalent towards flippers. I occasionally carry a CRKT M16 and the flipper along with the assisted opening does make it very fast to open but I think that is the only knife I have that has that feature and I have so many knives that I like better.

Ive been looking for some sort of flipper. The Skeletool is so easy to open that it got me thinking…

I had a Buck years ago that opened quickly

Do I need it?  No. Do I want it? Yes.

I don’t know what to get though… some knives with thumb studs open just as fast as a flipper.

I wasn't talking about awl kinds of flippers (like I think some of you are). I meant only those who are called "front flippers", like these:

In general, I'm not a fan of flippers, frontal or lateral.

I had one flipper that was a pain to open without using the flipper. Naturally the time you need to use your knife is when there is a group of small children standing nearby eating ice cream cones. Because it only opens by flipping, you use your best Bruce Lee impersonation and flip it out with a very audible 'snap'. The overly protective nanny screams because some crazy-looking, knife wielding maniac is surely about to go berserker on her young wards. The startled children drop the precious balls of ice cream off their cones onto the pavement and then start to cry. Maybe you cry a little, too,...because it's wrong to waste ice cream.

No. Not a fan.

I think 'snapping' a knife open is bad practice in general, leading to excess wear. And you look like a silly-tool, not a tool-user.

Except.....

I do like the Buck Vantage.

When I got my small Vantage, I had not realized that it was a flipper. I just saw the little flipper as being a small guard. But it didn't take me long to start using the flipper feature to open the knife about 1/2 way, then using the thumb hole to slowly open it the rest of the way. And it can be opened one-handed with just the thumb hole (albeit a bit awkwardly).

I like the small Vantage well enough that I got the medium. Once again, I was surprised that it was a flipper design. ( I guess I had just become used to the small's flipper and used it unconsciously. ) However, I generally just open the medium Vantage using the thumb hole.

In my mind a flipper design is a negative feature, but, as in the case of the Buck Vantages, sometimes I can overlook that.

And avoid opening my knives around ice cream parlors.   ;)

P.s. -- just removed the annoying pocket clip from the medium Buck Vantage pictured above. Not sure why I hadn't removed that earlier.....

Buck made a few new knives this year. I like the Langford and the Decatur. Both are side (back ) flippers

They look like a great way to hurt yourself whilst trying to impress your friends.

I clicked on to this thread because I had never heard the term,"front flipper".My only response is:"WHY?" It seems awkward at best and a bit dangerous at the worst.I'll stick with normal opening knives.

Well, it's a good thing I don't have any friends, then.

I tend to agree with your assessment, Ray.  I do appreciate the standard flippers though.

Might have to try 'em before you know.

Sometimes I think I'll like a knife but don't, and sometimes I think I won't but end up loving it. I would not have picked up a Vantage if I had fully realized that it was a flipper design. But I'm glad I did!

I looked at one recently, I think it was the Boker Wasabi?  But, anyhow, it was marked as UK legal as it has a non-locking blade length that complies with UK law. I was not sure, however, whether the UK Police would share the view on legality as they are certainly not keen on one haded opening blades. :-\

The good thing about some of the front flipper knives is that you can use both hands to open them. They have no noticeable OHO method, so you can deploy them two handedly and avoid that "OMG, that's an automatic knife!" reaction.

I have lots of non OHO knifes that I can open with just one hand (from a Buck 110 to a SAK Classic). Doesn't mean the average user can do it or that the knives are considered OHO.

Front flipper knives are not what I thought they were.  I thought they were just flipper knives but now I see they are different.  I've learned something new, mostly about the incompleteness of my collection, again.  While not something I think I would like for the most part, I did find myself looking at the CRKT Dually thinking it looked interesting but it is a little small. The front flipper is also a bottle opener.

Fair point - and I'm no stranger to a 111mm SAK OHO  :)

I like them, they're really not as awkward as they seem once you handle one and try it out a few times. I have the Boker Exskellibur (spelling likely not correct) and I really enjoy it. I want to pick up some more when funds allow, the Civivi Mckenna looks nice for example.

I'll upload a pic of mine in a bit  :tu:

They can dislike it, it isn't illegal here and if they're going to take away a legal knife on nonsense like that then they're likely already looking for a reason to do it regardless  :dunno:

Obviously make your own choices w/regard to our... 'well thought out' restrictions, in my opinion/experience just be sensible in how you use them and where and you likely won't have a problem, carry legal and whatever they say you can likely appeal if you want since you aren't actually breaking the law  :tu:
