Half Multiforce
on: July 12, 2021, 02:22:09 AM
I think that I have caught the modding fever and I  :like: it  :D

Been looking over all of the modding threads looking for ideas. Seen that quite a few people have constructed half Waves, half Surges, and half Charges (Poncho has a half Charge that I covet ). I like what I have seen, but I lack the source material to make one for myself. Well, actually I do have one used Surge, but it seems to be a bit heavy for a multi tool pocket knife. But I do not have a Wave or a Charge since I prefer the PST/ST branch of Leatherman MTs.

I was thinking about looking for a used Wave/Charge, but then I realized that I have a very good copy of the Wave already: the Ozark Trail Multiforce

The scissors and can opener are top notch, the saw is as good as the saw that comes with the ST 300, the blades are fine, and it has a 1/4" bit holder (a big plus for me). I have found the file to be okay, though the consensus seems to be that the Wave's file is better. Finally, it has a large straight driver. And oh yeah, all the tools lock except for the bit holder.

I used the handle containing the scissors et al. I found that it was easy to add the bit holder in the pliers end of that handle. With a minimal amount of grinding, the bit holder engages the pliers' backspring while inline with the handle. Though the bit holder does not lock, I bent the backspring a bit so that there is a lot of resistance to folding up. Certainly much more than the Gerber Armbar Drive. The bit holder with bit overlaps the scissors and has to be opened in order to extract the scissors, but that is not much of a problem.

I like the saw a lot, but chose to install the file instead since I have a saw in my Klein/Blackfire MT. I chose the plain edge blade over the serrated edge, but shortened it since I prefer a blade without a belly.

I decided to try to jazz up the scales a bit. I first etched the scales using salt water, cotton swabs, speaker wire, and a 20 volt cordless Craftsman battery, and then I used a brass brush in my rotary tool to brush some of the etching out. The scale with the clip turned out a bit better than the other scale. I may give it another try in the future.

Here are some pictures:

Very nice! If you don't often need pliers, this is a great option for having just the other options available, in a slimmer tool.

Thanks!

I use pliers during the work week, and I like having a pliers-based MT with me to serve as long nose/needle nose pliers. But when I am not at work, I don't need pliers often. So having a slimmer tool at those times is desirable.

A brand new Multiforce at Walmart is going to cost you way less than a BO ST300 is going to cost me

I worked on the scales again tonight. I decided to copper plate the scales. I don't have the proper power supply, and I didn't even have the proper chemicals or equipment to plate copper onto stainless steel (typically a nickel layer is plated first since copper won't bond to the passive layer on the surface of stainless steel). However, if your goal is for an interesting look rather than a proper layer of copper, then it is possible to achieve a decent result with crude instruments.

Now that's purdy.  I'd be happy to keep the stainless look if I ever get around to doing mine, but that copper is mighty nice.

Yes! When I saw yours and Sam's I realized that something like that would be very helpful for me. And it has been the past two weeks.

I should have provided the link to your can opener thread since it was your test I had in mind when describing the quality of the opener.

Predictably, the copper did not hold up well on the side opposite the clip. That side has to ride against a sweaty leg all day.

So, I tried my hand at DIY black oxide using ferric chloride. The scales are dark gray instead of black, but they do provide contrast against the stainless steel tools, which is what I wanted. It may not look as good as Poncho's Charge knife, but I am happy with it.

Personally, I think it is one of the better MTs available.

This thread is gateway modding.  See a very nice mod, buy a tool to make a copy.  Realize you like the new tool.  Buy a second one for the actual mod.  Realize you need a spare because you like the original and the mod.  Buy a third tool.

Here is a short explanation of how I used the ferric chloride to produce the black oxide finish:

I prepared separate plastic containers with the following items:

Clean water (distilled is best)

Water mixed with dishwashing liquid

1 part ferric chloride and 2 parts white vinegar (this is the etching bath)

Water mixed with baking soda (to neutralize the hydrochloric acid formed in the ferric chloride bath)

The process:
Put on nitrile or latex gloves
Tie string to scale
Clean the scale in the dishwashing liquid
Rinse in the water
Clean with degreaser
Rinse in the water
Clean again with degreaser
Rinse again
Pat dry with lint-free cloth
Dip into ferric chloride/vinegar bath and leave for a few minutes
Remove scale from etch bath and drop into baking soda bath
Rinse

If the black oxide finish is to your liking, then dry and soak in oil for a while.
If not, repeat the steps above.

This method will achieve a dark grey, not black, finish. There are solutions (copper/selenium) for sale that can produce a black finish, but I don't know how durable they are. This method is relatively cheap and can be repeated if the finish is scratched or worn away.
