How much is a website worth (valuation tool)
on: August 17, 2021, 11:37:19 AM
I bumped onto this one by accident. There should be more similar sites too.

https://sites.cutercounter.com/

Have fun seeing how much or how little  a website is valued at.

The Ad revenue is also interesting. MTO is getting near to $500 per month, BF around 800, for comparison

as much as someone is willing to pay for it...

I'm betting we don't get offers even close, but Grant would need to confirm that...

I'm amazed, BF is huge in comparison.

When I ran MTo and BF on that website  I got drastically different numbers for monthly ad revenue  Mto $166 and BF over $4,000

edit:  different results every time  :dunno:

MTO was valued at nearly 100Grand too, this morning.  Something is not right, are we on MTO or on Bitcoin.com?

Maybe it takes the ad value of the past few hours or something similar.

BF ad value is shown as 4 grand now.

Our value changes significantly every time i run it, which I have done from time to time.  Sometimes we are near 6 figures, other times we are a Big Mac combo.

In the end, MTO is more than a set of stats on ad revenues etc- between the forum, the Main Site, the Encyclopedia, the Gallery  SAKWiki etc, there is ablot more value here than a robot can measure.

And that's not even counting the social media side- the FB group is quite popular, at least with people that say Gerber Sucks but then can't say why they suck....   ::)

I guess that is cool somewhere on the internet....

The fact is, our value on these kinds of services is usually quite low as we don't have a huge pile of ad services jumping out everywhere and slapping users in the face.  We COULD be hugely profitable, but then it wouldn't be MTO.

You've forgotten the sale value of the hive mind. I'm sure we're worth something, if only to the brain equivalent of a scrap yard....

Could you?
Maybe a sucker is born every minute, but whenever I land on a site that has a pop-introduction-offer, or anything else like that, I X-out pretty quick.
If I see what are clearly paid "reviews" or articles. I X-out
and if when I go to X-out, I get a "Wait, don't leave, More offers!" pop up, I throw up in my mouth.

Lots of "survival" gear sites do it,
and it's not just sites that rely on ad revenue.
One that springs to mind because I went there a day or so ago, and left before getting the information I was after because of the aggressive advertising - daisy.com - a well known manufacturer/supplier, you'd think they'd let the history and quality of their products speak for itself and have a more...demure? subtle? website....but as soon as you're there a pop up with a countdown clock warning you to get your DEAL on whatever! and when you go to X out, you get a popup, with a PING, saying...I don't know what, didn't read it.

I believe the time for that obnoxious behaviour is behind us (it should have been behind us in 1900....) and we need to be a little more civilised

I can't imagine I'm the only one who objects to that sort of thing to the point where I won't do business with anyone who does it (I cancelled Amazon Prime because they have ads INSIDE a paid service. I was disgusted)

I still buy recipe books, because I find online recipes to be (for one, terrible) but also just thin covers for selling smurf.

How to weight what a website is "worth" vs some arbitrary financial figure? I have no idea. I doubt it can be done using metrics as you might do for a business.
Goodwill has little value online - being on the customer list for the local painter inflates his business value, because it probably means I'll use him again, and it possibly means I'll recommend him to friends and family if they need a local painter.
Being on the list for a website? It takes me seconds to go somewhere else, and given the nature of websites, the "Goodwill" really belongs to Grant and the team - if they quit/move on/start another concern elsewhere, the goodwill probably goes with them.

Yeah, we could.

The fact is, those sites do that because it works.  If it didn't, they'd do something else.  For every visitor like you that leaves, there will be ten others that click through all of the pages to find out what kind of mushroom they are, or to see what all of the Backstreet Boys look like today.

And, each of those ten others will generate a hundred times what each page on MTO generates.

There's a reason they all drive nicer cars than Dear Old Uncle Def does.  But then, Dear Old Uncle Def has always believed in building things slowly and properly, and that's why many sites come and go, but this one will be old enough to drive I'm a few months.

And, while I appreciate the comment regarding the goodwill, yes, we have some excellent team members helping to run the show, but it takes a whole community of good people to keep it running.  Without members, a forum is a waste of a perfectly good porn server.

Well, I'm the weirdo that spends 3 minutes reloading a Youtube page just to avoid seeing a 5 seconds add, so I don't think I'm a part of that target demographic.

I don't even wait for pop-up adds, I'm gone as soon as the cookies definition screen starts to appear.

I have an idea regarding the first suggestion

We did try the second suggestion, with the women thread, but I do not know how much more revenue it was making
