Corkscrew Mechanic Mod
on: October 03, 2021, 05:56:28 PM
A while back I tried to create a Corkscrew Mechanic by taking an Angler and removing the fish scaler. It went rather badly wrong. I reached out to Comis and asked for help. This is the result. The peening is unbelievable. I can't tell which side he did it on! That's some real skill. In addition all the tools have the correct snap and the tool feels like a factory model. I've been really looking forward to this mod as 3 layer is about the max that I want to carry and the pliers are going to make a big difference to my life due to disability in my fingers. I don't regularly need a full size pliers head with me at all times but the help for picking up or gripping small stuff will be invaluable.

I gave it some new micarta scales from Tachenmesser over on Etsy. I also quickly filed off the keyring nub, I'm not a fan of them. Looking good and feels great in the hand.

Huge thanks and respect to Comis for his skill!

Now that's a good looking mod.  You said that you removed the fish scaler, but it looks like the scissors took the hit also.

The Angler doesn't have scissors.

Thank you for the post!

Hope this tool will serve you well, and for the peening, I know some folks may like to pre-peen the pin on one side, before fitting the tools back together since it may be easier.  But I choose a different route and always peen on both side alternatively, since I think it is more secure and the brass will fill up the rivets better.

So despite this new knife's excellence I'd never gotten round to carrying it on me, it had been living in my shoulder bag. This is mainly because it didn't fit into my belt pouch due to the extra thickness. I finally got round to ordering some new leather and making a new pouch. Horizontal pouch, massively over built but then when you see the old pouch (last pic) which has been on my belt almost every single day for 5 years (holy leather patina batman!), you can see why I like to build them strong! That's the idea behind the double snaps (my trademark) and the full length belt loop also. It has to withstand many years of being caught, pulled, bashed, etc. I built it a bit more simply than the previous one which had high end Horween leather, a fancier X stitch and had a smooth leather interior for an easier slide in and out but this one was mainly to try out the dimensions and try and remember how I did it 5 years ago! I'm still happy with it and not in a rush to make a posher version of it unless I'm very bored one day. Well it's now on my belt and I've used the pliers twice already this morning! The SAK pliers are not great to be honest, the spring in particular is too anemic and the handles too thin to provide a comfortable grip - but to replace my crippled finger functionality they are very useful.
