You can also harden a wooden stake etc, by heating its point in a fire.

I see they cut through the fatty part of the steak, not sure I'm buying it.   :dunno:

I'm interested to see what it can really do.  Twenty some years ago people had similar reactions to the introduction of ceramic blades.  I realize ceramic blades are still not common, but I think they have proven themselves.

I recall an interview with knifemaker Kevin "Mad Dog" McClung in a restaurant.  He was talking about his new ceramic blade, the Waiter overhears and says "that's ceramic?  That won't cut anything."

Mad Dog then casually picks up a fork off the table and starts whittling it away with the ceramic blade!

It's a new process, and I think it's fascinating.  Whether we are all going to be carrying wooden MP600s in the future is another story, but I think it's cool anyway.

Who needs practicality anyway?  :D

I think wooden nails would be cool to use as long as they didn't break :o :like: :like:

I suspect it's environmental credentials all depend on what the "chemicals" they use to remove the lignin actually are and what the power usage is. It's a neat enough idea, that I suspect goes way beyond cutlery, but I'll wait and see what the applications and impact really are.  :)

I watched the video of the wooden nail being hammered, and it reminds me of a lot of shop students trying to hammer nails into their projects.
A little Leatherman information.

I don't know about wooden knives, but Felix Immler did a very surprising video about wooden nails.

Wouldn't this cause some security issues? They could pass metal detectors without a problem. Then again, so can polymer based knives/guns...

While it seems the products in the article are designed for more "long term" use, disposable wooden cutlery is pretty common around here....
