You laugh, but that's the way I buy levels and thermometers - see if all (or most) of the models available show the same result. For levels I stack them on each other and check if reading is the same. Sadly nowadays it's worth to check the tape measures against each other too.

I put them on the floor, hoping the contractor that built the building at least gets that much right!

Years ago i was at a popular US based home improvement depot (I won't mention their name:P ) buying fire extinguishers.  I needed three and opened every box on the shelf to find three good ones.  The rest were in various states of discharge.

I took the discharged ones to the customer service department and told them they were discharged.  They told me "no, we sell them discharged, you have to take them to the fire station and have them charged."

I then pointed to the three that were charged (same brand/style/size) and said "then why are these ones good?"

I then proceeded to ask her how she would feel if someone had a kitchen fire and grabbed their brand new fire extinguisher and found out that it was discharged, right out of the box.   :twak:

I'm sure they were all back on the shelf an hour later, but at least I felt better for trying.

Tape measures have a tolerance of +-1 cm per meter so they probably will be off a bit from each other anyway.

Oh yeah, and in case you forget, don't buy fire bottles from that place!

Shouldn't be too hard to spot, the place (whatever it is) is bright orange.

I guess the fool proof way is to rotate it left to right and check again. Or use a phone app  :D

This reminds me of the story of a guy who comes to a little town and stops near the church. It's close to noon and the bells start tolling. He looks at the church clock and it shows a different time than his pocket watch (just to avoid the smurf).

He goes in and asks the priest:
"Tell me, how do you set the correct time in the church clock? It seems a few minutes off."

The priest says:
"We set it by the firehouse siren, at noon."

The man goes to the firehouse and asks the chief:
"Tell me, how do you set the correct time for the siren?"

The chief says:
"We set it by the church bell, at noon."
