Ontario trip 2022
on:
May 14, 2022, 01:31:38 PM
Megan and I are headed back to Ontario for a couple of weeks- first to visit my family again, and then down to Toronto for a few days while Megan's dog gets surgery.
We are driving in Megan's Volvo instead of my Jeep, and while I love my Jeep, this is a much smoother ride!
We've been on the road since 4:30 this morning, and it's currently 08:30. Megan is driving so I thought I'd start documenting the trip!
We are driving through New Brunswick right now, and in the second pic below you will see fences along the side of the highway. This is because there is a huge issue here with deer and moose, and the fences are there to discourage wildlife wandering on to the highway.
The last two pics are taken as we crossed over the Saint John River near a town called Jemsegg. It's actually a really pretty bridge, and I wish I had the time to stop and fly my drone around it a bit.
I'll update this with some of the cool stuff we see along the way- this should be a fun thread! 😀

Stopped near Oromucto to get gas and clean the windshield. It's getting difficult to see!

We have just entered Quebec! Our third province today!
We will be spending the night in Montreal tonight, but that's still another 6 hours away. That will put us about tem hours away from our destination, an easy enough trip to knock out tomorrow.
As I said, moose are bad here- here are a couple of the warning signs, and an idea of how bad the bugs are!

These bugs - nothing in comparison to the Florida love bug swarms I accidentally decimated with a rented Harley Davidson 5 years ago
The guy at the rental station had to pick up his jaw after I showed up to return it haha.
Safe trip boss

We are about an hour and a half away from Montreal, where we plan to spend the night. It's a little over halfway, and we could push on, but there's no real huge rush to get there.
And why rush when you can enjoy the Appalachian mountains as they run through Quebec?
Also, the St Lawrence River is as beautiful and impressive as any other river you could come up with!
Lastly I managed to snap a picture of what is known as "the Dinosaur McDonalds" since they have a bunch of dinosaur statues outside!

I don't know, I don't think I have ever actually stopped there! It may be the only McDonalds east of SSM that I haven't eaten at!
We made it safe and sound to Montreal and I have already sent some emails to harass JZMTL, because why not?
Naturally we took the tunnel, because Google said it was the best route, when in fact I think it was really the most inconvenient!
We got to the hotel only to find they are building a bridge across the road from us, and with my luck, they are likely to work double time all night to make their deadline!
On the bright side, Jackson found a friend in the hotel room that likes to bark at him as much as he likes to bark back!
Now it's time to relax and pop (unscrew actually!) this fine vintage of gas station wine! I love Quebec!

Yikes, I try not to eat at McDonald as much as I can.
If you make it up to the Sault, you should try (if you haven't already) Noel's Place/Chummies Grill in Rankin Reserve...just as you get into the Sault on the right hand side on a side street that runs parallel to highway 17. It is right across from my workplace actually.

They make a mean Indian Taco dish, or a chilli poutine. Their fish is also good. I find their food to be excellent. The owner has great relations with the BC Timber Kings, who had a show on HGTV a few years ago. Because of this, the restaurant is replete with a lot of beautiful wood carvings.

In what would be a late start for us (but still probably early for most people!) we were back on the road at 6am. Of course, we are in Montreal, and so a stop at St. Viateur for some of the best bagels to be had anywhere is non negotiable. This meant a drive through Montreal, which is such a beautiful city.
Montreal has a reputation for being full of crazies, and, if you are used to modern, well laid out cities, Montreal absolutely lives up to it! In reality Montreal is half old world, European style city, and half organic city, with things just growing and changing pretty well anywhere and any way it wants.
It is a fascinating place, and one that I think everyone should see before they depart this little blue marble- it will astound and confuse you, frustrate and inspire you, and probably all at once, especially if you are the one driving!

My father's family is from here. My father took a short 35 year break from living here to serve in the military, then came back when he retired.
Can't say I know of any Folz in my family tree, so I guess you got lucky!

I really want to visit Canada at some point in my life! Looks beautiful
Here in Sweden most bigger roads (if not all) also have wildlife fences and clear warnings for the patches that don't

Canada is a beautiful place if you like the outdoors and that lifestyle. We have everything from mountains to prairies, deserts to oceans, and even giant, sprawling world class cities if that's your thing.
There's just one smurfty spot, in the north end of Ottawa, near the river. It's pretty, but everything inside is rotten to the core.
Beyond that, Canada is pretty much the most amazing place to be. Megan and I have just driven for two straight days and are still just over a day's drive away from the halfway point, if we were trying to cross it, so there's a lot to see.
Where I am now is my favorite place to be though!

We had a bit of a light show and some booming, but nothing serious.
I'm sure the black flies are going to appreciate the extra moisture!
