I was focusing on the knife more than the background(agree with Sos on the knife), but just pick up the title after browsing the post for the second time.  So what could one learn from this?  :pok:
Sorry Comis, I missed this the first time through.  Here's a little tidbit for you.  It's the little things that are missed and become valuable when living under runaway inflation and dealing with a black market economy.  So, besides the obvious prepper pantry I am stocked up on trade goods including health and hygiene products such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, and hard goods such as work gloves, tools and knives.  I've tried to keep a supply of good booze to trade including bourbon, rum and Scotch whisky, but I keep drinking it.

Day 30

Rain predicted for tonight, leaves covering back yard for second time.

Leave blower rounded them up into one long pile.  Next step is to take onto tarp and move to the curb for city pickup.

My Izzie II available via neck carry, not neede as of yet!😉

Great scenic!

Great job with the lawn, nice glove too!

Thank you Comis, trying to stay ahead of the leaves, can’t wait for all to drop.
Gloves are nice, found at Sam’s Club and my size too, Cabretta Leather, very durable, XL, had put lotion/oil on hands and force on to stretch for better fit.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Day 30

Happy Halloween!  Carving a pumpkin with a small fixed blade was easy, but I probably still prefer something even smaller/thinner like the small blade on a 91mm SAK.

Thank you Alan for hosting this fun fixed blade challenge, getting to see all the cool fixie was always a high point for me in this challenge.  And I think I probably will be getting a sharp finger this thanksgiving, after seeing them frequently in this challenge.

Day 30

Cut up a box with the Magnacut Mule.

This knife has never ceased to amaze me.  Magnacut is plenty tough for my uses, and has not rusted in the least.

I set aside some funds to buy a new knife next month, but I may end up using that money to buy Halpern G-10 scales and one of Spyderco's sheaths for the Mule. The cheap Frost sheath I'm using is flimsy, and it hurts to use the knife without handles.

Here are my takeaways from the challenge.

All my bigger belt-carry fixed blades do their job well. However, my small "pocket" fixed blades come up short.  Some are uncomfortable and oddly laid out (ARS Altoids Tin Knife), some are too small (Tekna Xtra Edge, AG Russell Hunter Scalpel), and some are too bulky (Mora Eldris--which for me, is either a coat pocket or belt carry knife). The CRKT Minimalist suffers from a tiny handle, and I may go with the custom scales I found.   The AG Russell Woodswalker is basically a paring knife that's been rebranded to being an outdoor knife. Mine rarely leaves the kitchen knife block.  The AG Russell Deer Hunter would be perfect, except the 4" blade is too long for EDC. I think that leaves the '80s and '90s era  Blackie Collins/Gerber Buddy System; which I am currently browsing online marketplaces for.

My local cutlery store has the Esee Izula, Becker Necker, Becker Remora, and a couple of TOPS that all look promising. I plan to see how each feels in-hand.

  it is Day 30

In retrospect, I found this challenge the most challenging to complete. I had to tuck my Buck 112s away, and find ways to discreetly carry a fix blade in my suburban setting and not draw unwanted attention.

My Mora 511 saw most activity when I worked construction of parking structures and lots. Yet, only in colder months, as easiest to conceal under jacket with crossbody strap or slip in long narrow leg pocket on bibs. Fix blade was so much better to access with work gloves.

Camping and hiking, my Buck 104 or Mora HD companion always would work but this month did not need to use.

I liked the Schrade Sharp Finger, GA1dad had presented great uses. I ordered two during the month, the first was a new China version, sharp, but other than slicing paper, it did not do well on wood sticks. The 2nd model is a USA model, received butter knife dull, I worked the blade, and applied a 20 degree edge, and it cuts, paper, card board even sticks. The blade is hard to control on hard materials, wanting to jump out of the cut.  Handled meat, and soft firm materials like foam OK, but not my favorite.
The elMorro, handled everything I tried except feather wood for fire prep. Just could not maintain a firm grip to stay the knife track.

The Scandi grinds I have cut very well, except apples, could not make a clean flat cut, the blade wanted to jump out about 3/4s the way on the downward cut. If using the end 1/3 of the blade not as much, as cutting slices out of a half.

The three knives I liked before I also liked through the challenge. Izula with new longer scales from Knife Connection, Buck 684 (have 3), (it is like the 113)  and an Izula II.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The Izula s could handle neck carry, belt carry discreetly and even tucked into front Jean pocket either right or left side. The Buck fits a 113 leather sheath, and besides deep insertion in the sheath rides the belt well and also could tuck in front right pocket standing up.

All three have similar blade shapes so likely why I was comfortable using. The Buck is also my kitchen cleaver for chopping, slicing meats, dicing veggies and even spreading peanut butter on crackers before being cleaned and put away.  All 3 can feather wood without issue.

After this I may look into some pocket clips that can mount to the Izulu’s sheath via screws. They are viable EDC options, but I look forward to my 112 Slim Select.  Pro or plain (red or orange or blue or gray?)

Congratulations AlanK for hosting a great month and monitoring our contribution.

Very entertaining contributions by AWL.
See ya wondering around the forum, have some catching up to accomplish.

Congratulations to awl who completed the challenge!

This was a fun challenge for me and my little Bow Legged Joe. Over-awl, the BLJ was a very handy utility knife. There were one or two occasions when I found myself wishing I had a knife with a slightly more acute knife, but even so, the BLJ awl-ways found a way. The edge geometry might be a tad obtuse, but I could probably thin it out a bit if I really wanted.

Once again, I find that carrying a fixed blade is a treat: they are so handy and easy to use. And don't take up any pocket space. I'll likely be carrying another fixie....maybe a 113...for November...until the December CYC.

Thanks to Alan for getting this challenge organized and running!  :tu:

Obake took part in 'heating the human, not the home,' I find one of these pain relief pads under a very, very thin hoodie results in a tremendous amount of warmth. Later on in the day it also attended to an Amazon package, sleepy shopping had gotten the better of me:

Day 30

For the final day, I thought I’d take a picture of the two knives I used the most during this challenge compared to my favorite fixed blade (Bark River Essential).

The White River Always There Knife (ATK) is an awesome little skeletonized knife. The knife performs real well at will at many tasks, especially for its size.  It can easily be carried as neck knife, on the belt or even in a cargo pocket.  The biggest problem with the ATK comes from being a skeleton handle knife.  The handle isn’t going to be that comfortable for a lot of use and can feel a little slick in the hand.  The gutted paracord wrap helps a little but I may try using 425 or 325 paracord without gutting to see how it works with the sheath.

The Buck 113 is an awesome knife - great for its purpose and beautiful.  It is big enough for a full comfortable grip.  The blade is a nice size and geometry which makes it great for most tasks.  its It is bigger than I usually carry, but it can could fairly easily.  I wish it came with a better sheath and a left-hand option, but at least I had a sheath that worked.

Fantastic finish everyone.  I'm currently working 15 hour days and I'm exhausted when I get home, but I will try to get to the drawing for the Gerber Vertebrae tonight or within the next couple of days.  Stay tuned to this channel.  I'll see you all in whichever challenges you're in for November and December.

And that knife reminds me so much about the Kabar.  From the way it lay tip down on the table, I bet it has a pretty decent forward bias and probably well balance in hand too.

I have to order some 325.  I started to wrap with 424 that I had and realized it would be too fat for the sheath.

Day 31

I've enjoyed occasionally carrying a fixed blade knife for many years and have tried many knives over that time.  My ideal EDC fixie is a knife that does everything for me that I would otherwise do with a folding pocket knife including being easy to carry on the belt, in a pocket, or around the neck, but in a sturdier, non-folding, format.  Sadly, I still have not found the answer to the question about which knife is "the best" EDC fixed blade.  I liked most of the knives in the challenge.  My takeaway from this challenge is this, that different people have different needs and what is ideal for one of us may not suit everyone else.  I bought the Bradford Guardian 3.5S for the challenge and found that it is a good user, but I didn't really like carrying it.  I did enjoy carrying and using the old Schrade Sharpfingers in my collection, but Loopcutter didn't care for his Sharpfingers.  Echotech also got the bug and purchased a new Sharpfinger and seemed to like it and Cody seemed fairly happy with his off brand copy.  I liked the novelty of the Bow Legged Joe but I would probably never buy one.  The Bark River Essential was a fantastic knife that seems to be just about right for an every day carry, and the knife HARM's dad made years ago was just awesome, although I had some concerns about it prying open paint cans.  I both liked and disliked the Mora Eldris because it was easy to carry just stuffed in a pocket, or belt carried in a flashlight pouch, but it took 2 hands to deploy it which defeats some of the utility or usefulness of an EDC fixed blade knife.  I did not try out the Gerber Vertebrae because that is for the lucky recipient to use and review, in this thread, as soon as possible after they receive it.  And with that I shall commence with the drawing without further delay.

Revising the list of participants by removing myself, and those who dropped out of the challenge for their own reasons, resulted in the following 9 members who finished.

01 Sos24
02 comis
03 Nix
04 cody6268
05 GearedForwards
06 old Lefty
07 harm
08 LoopCutter
09 Echotech

Starting with 1 and ending with 9 the random number generator delivered a result of 8.  Congratulations LoopCutter!   Gordon, please PM your address to me.   I will get your prize out as soon as possible, unfortunately it will be at least a couple of weeks before I can get to a post office.
