Day 7

The saw typically isn’t one of my most frequently used implements on any of my SAKs or MTs, but to give a fair evaluation I was determined to test out the saw on the Vulpis.

As shown, the saw did manage to cut wood.  However it was slow and awkward and I’m not sure it is worthwhile.  The short saw blade necessitated short strokes, and limits the size of wood that can be cut (probably to smaller than the size I could just break without a tool).

The short handle, which I can’t get more than three fingers on in any grip, essentially became only a two-finger handle when holding it at an angle and with my ring finger behind the end of the tool to keep my fingers from slipping forward onto the saw blade on the forward  stroke.

So, while the saw technically did cut wood, the size and ergonomics are such that I don’t believe it worth having.

Day 8

Having carried and used the Vulpis for about a week, having used or attempted to use every implement on it, and preparing to switch to a different SAK-alike tomorrow, here are my final (for now) thoughts on the Vulpis…

The blade helped me free my new compressor and accessories from their packaging today.  I’ve used it throughout the last week for numerous cigars, packages, fingernails, etc.  In spite of its smallish size and odd shape, it is a good blade.

The screwdrivers are useful, if a bit oddly sized.

The bottle opener is adequate, though slightly fiddly to use.

The can opener will work in a pinch, but if I anticipated using it regularly I would choose a different SAK/MT.

The scissors really fell short of expectations.  While they can manage to cut some things that are thick and rigid enough, they are nearly ineffective on things that are thin and flexible, such as hair or strings.

While the saw technically did cut wood, small size and poor ergonomics rendered it not a worthwhile function to have on this MT IMO.

When I originally purchased the Vulpis, I had high hopes that it might be like a FX made from premium materials, but it hasn’t really lived up to that.  It is, however, an overall good quality piece with a few glaring issues with some of the functions.  Accordingly, my advice to anyone considering purchasing a Vulpis is to get one of the two-layer versions with only the blade and opener layer.  The scissors and or saw add weight and bulk, but not really useful functionality IMO.

Day 8

Got to cut some zipties off so I can setup some Christmas inflatables.

Also got to use the flat head to help me open another SAK-A-Like.  It was definitely rusty and tight in there.  I gave it a good wash and scrub, and then decided to oil the pivot points to help crack everything loose again.  Going to soak each end in mineral oil over night to hopefully help it loosen up some more.  It already has a decent snap when closing.

That's a nice little knife. Excited to see what follows up the Vulips.

Day 8

Getting a little better at the OHO. The trick is to start with your finger "high" on the blade so it won't touch the edge when you roll. Still not the most convenient, but hopefully it'll keep getting better.

Opened this lumpy package...

And about a million other goodies. This is probably about 2/3 of it, along with a mini pry, ratchet and bit set, some adjustable wrenches, and a knife.

Day 9

Next up is the Mikov Fixir.  In contrast to the smaller Vulpis, this is more what I would consider a full size pocket knife at 4 1/8” closed.  Blades are 440A.

This particular model features a main locking clip point blade, a secondary gut hook blade, a saw, and plastic scales.

It also came with a brown leather belt sheath (vertical carry only).  But, I’m not much of a belt sheath guy, and I have no problem pocket carrying a knife this size, so pocket carry it is.

F&F and W&T are solid.

Day 9

Been a busy weekend. I drove back home to visit my old highschool friends, and I'm posting late. They had multiplayer (sort of deathmatch) Pacman, but the griptape was coming up. Trimmed the end. Still not feeling the OHO, but the blade is serviceable enough.

Day 10

Magic Hat #9 was the first beer I actually enjoyed, so it seemed a fitting buy for my nostalgia weekend. I LOVE this bottle opener. The long length and thick hook make it great and grabbing on and popping the top off. Strong contender for best on this style of multi.

Day 10

Doing some inflatable maintenance.  Had to splice in some LED replacements into our Santa inflatable.  Blade was pretty good at dealing with the insulation.

Day 10

The main clip point blade of the Fixir locks open via a lockback mechanism.  Lock up is solid, with no blade play in any direction.

I like this clip point blade shape, and the blade is a nice size.  (That is a 91 mm SAK in the comparison pic.)

The blade had a useable edge right from the factory.  It easily trimmed this cigar.

So what’s the problem?  It’s the huge, protruding lock release.  While it hasn’t been as noticeable in the pocket as I feared, it is definitely uncomfortable to hold the knife in some grips, and I would have a real concern about hot spots under extended use.  I would have much preferred a slip joint main blade over having to contend with this monstrosity of a lock release.

Might have joined in on this one but had already signed on to the Chuck Yeager challenge.
Been following along to see whatever was posted in terms of SAK Alike.

Not sure if this would have qualified but I recently got this to replace some old cutlery in my EDC bag.

That’s an interesting looking piece.  Does it come apart like a hobo knife, or is it permanently a single piece?

I’m not sure detailed rules for this challenge were explicitly posted, but in past SAK-alike challenges, any MT that (1) was knife-based, (2) was not made by Vic or Wenger, and (3) had at least one tool function other than knife blade(s) would qualify.

Day 11

The gut hook blade did an OK job trimming this cigar.

This blade definitely seems more of a specialized/niche blade than a general utility blade due to the complete lack of a sharp point and concave blade shape.  It wouldn’t be my first choice for an EDC knife, but it’s my understanding that these knives are marketed at least to some extent as folding hunters, so it perhaps makes some sense in that application.

It slides apart, Nate, like a hobo.  Knife/spoon side and the fork side.  I find the corkscrew to be an added piece that seems like an attempt at a SAK copy.

Really nice looking tool. What brand/model is it?

Day 11

Used it all evening fixing Christmas inflatables but I couldn't get action shots as it was already dark out and I was holding the flashlight with my mouth.  I'm done tired of fixing inflatables but it's worth it when I see the smiles on the wife and kids.

Here's a glamour shot instead.
