Day 22 part TWO

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Top, Sheffield blade worked a tip onto the twig it was provided.   Unfolded handle for better grip and the heel of the blade worked the best at getting a bite into the wood of the hardwood.

Center, the Clip Tool blade required some adjustment in hand to find a sweet spot for biting into this wood sample. The tip of the larger twig had a knuckle, so the approach required moving up from the end and feather the layers until the point was revealed.  Surprised that the heel of the blade did not give good control, using the blades post just before the curve to the tip was more comfortable and was equally efficient.

Bottom, the NexTool as expected had little issue whittling down the softer wood of a StateFarm pencil. Its blade shape is very well suited for such tasks.

Another observation, I am left handed, and the Sheffield worked and handled best when held in my left hand and material in my right.   However the other two knives felt natural using my left hand. Both were better in my right hand, better control as well as cutting efficiency.  :dunno:
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

And, a shout out to GARY!!! :woohoo:

Great job finding a method to shape a pencil tip without a blade on your SwissTech. 👍

Day 22

Well it looks like I got my days mixed up.  I posted the sharpened pencil yesterday. Anyways, I have a question for the Dime owners. How has the pivot on your Dime held up? Mine is getting loose and the jaws have developed quite a bit of play. The hardest thing I have done with the jaws is pull wiring staples from siding. It did a great job on that. I haven’t used the wire cutter in the jaws. I am just surprised that it is loosening up so early. It is not even a month old.

Well, it is about time for an update on the elusive Ms. Phoenix.  I had to haul trash and do some stuff yesterday.  I remembered to check out the cottage past my mailbox.
The little blue car has been parked for more than 10 years now on the left side of the cottage.  It was gone.  In its place was the white car that was parked on the right side of the house.
I continued on and did my chores.  On the way back there is a house that nobody lives in.  Man and his wife are both dead.  Kids are grown and gone.  I saw what looked exactly like the little blue car parked in front of the garage doors.  And, parked next to it was what looked like an identical little red car.  Strange stuff happening.
Best wishes.  G

Don't worry JonesE, it's all good.  Actually, I was worried that I had missed something when all the sharpened pencils and sticks began appearing!

Day 22
Mini-challenge

Sharpening a pencil takes a little extra time when you don't have a blade of any sort on your keychain plier tool.  I decided that anything which allowed the pencil to write a message would be sufficiently sharp.
Photo 1)  A green pencil and the Swiss+Tech.
Photo 2)  I placed the pencil in the jaws of the pliers and ground down the paint and wood with them.  Took a little while.  Then I tapered the last fraction of an inch of the pencil a little.  Still using the pliers.
Photo 3)  Wrote the message Finished on the paper holding the wood dust.  The lead only peeked through on one side.  The other is still covered with wood.  Sharp?  No.  But it would do to write.

I tried to think of the last time I bought a pencil.  Or a pen.  I'm not sure I ever bought a pencil.  Went through school by borrowing paper and writing instruments.  I bought a fancy silver Schaeffer when I got out of school.  I still have it, but haven't used it in ages.  I did buy some wire bound notebooks now and then and test Blue Books.  Remember those?  I begged, borrowed, or st... FOUND pencils and pens.  School boys throw away pencils with no erasers.  So there it is.  I never bought a pencil that I can remember, and maybe only one pen.  I still have sufficient numbers of both.  I sharpened worlds of pencils with a pocket knife.  My old Grandad said not to use pencil sharpeners.  All they did was grind up the pencils, according to him.  He was right, of course.
Best wishes.
Gary

Nice work, Gary!

Day 22

Feel like smurf. We had some old tests under the bathroom sink, and it looks like Covid. Finding and whittling a pencil was a bridge too far today. The tiny pliers actually did really well on staple duty.

Day 22
It was a busy day and wasn’t home for most of it.
I decided to do the mini challenge in the time before I left.  The wind kept blowing the shavings away so there isn’t much pictured.
Also, did have time for a beer.

That's very impressive Gary!!  I'd say you earned double points for that endeavor.

Day 22

Two pencils and a stick.  This was a bit harder to do what with the size of the tiny blade.  Still, I was able to complete the assigned task.  Just took me a bit longer than I anticipated.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

When I went out earlier this week, I stopped in at Food Lion for some ham and cheese.  I walked in the lobby and grabbed the first cart I saw.
The cart didn't roll super great, but lots of these carts need maintenance.  Then one front wheel locked up and skidded.  I rolled it backward a step and looked to see what I had run over.  Nothing.  Went a few more steps and it did it again.  From then on it was nothing but a problem to get this thing to roll.  I just pushed harder and kept at it.  Finally when I was getting close to checking out, the left front wheel locked up solid.  I walked around the front and picked up the cart with one hand and dragged it to the checkout.
The assistant manager was watching.  He said, "Oh you got one of those."  Then he pulled what looked like a key tab for turning on car alarms, etc.  Just smaller.  He pushed a button while pointing it at the wheel and said, "That did it."
The cart had some sort of locking device on the front wheel.  Couldn't see any mechanism that would cause a wheel to lock.  Looked exactly like a front shopping cart wheel.  I accused him of practicing dark magical arts.  That took him back a little.  Anti-theft device?  Who knows.
I am sure some of you are chuckling and would like to ask how I got my groceries stowed on my mule for the trip home.  I know I'm behind the times.  It doesn't bother me any.
Best wishes.  G

Final mini Challenge on Friday August 29:

Use your mini pliers to bend a paper clip or wire into a unique shape.  Any shape will do.  It can be an unrecognizable doodle, a mess, a disaster, a zig zag or a pile of hog hockey.  Bonus points for something recognizable like a cross, ring, arrow or tetradactyl (four toed) foot.  Make a zipper pull, or wrap it around a pencil to make a spring shape.  Or straighten the paper clip and use a file to make a micro flat driver.  Post a pic of your mini pliers and paper clip abomination or masterpiece.

I got one of those carts at a Meijer’s store in my area.  This cart had a placard mounted on the cart warning that it had a wheel locking system that activates beyond parking lot.

Well mine locked up in the store withe about 12 items in it!

I found another cart while looking for options, but its front wheels were locked too!

Walked up front, gripped another cart, went back found my cart, transferred item to this replacement and flipped the broken cart upside down in middle of aisle.   Found that other cart and did same thing.

I could tell my BP was elevated, so stopped my shopping and paid for goods and left. Then on the way to the car, guess what ????

Carried bags to car, returned to cart, and it went upside down in middle traffic lane. 🙃

Next time in that store, I did not find a single cart with signs, and some I notice had new front wheels😱

I know your frustration my friend!
Lived it,
