SAK-A-Like / Off Brand Challenge - September
on: May 06, 2025, 06:41:50 AM
Hear ye!  Hear ye!  Come one and all to the SAK-A-Like / Off Brand Challenge for the month of September.

Do you have a Nextool Knight, a NoBox, a Pradel, a Leatherman T2/T4, or a Swiza?  How about an Armbar, an Imperial, Colonial, or an Imprerial Schrade?  Or how about one of those nameless rabble that you find next to nothing at the bottom of the bargain bin that you wouldn't be caught dead with?

If you answered yes to any of the above (if you answered yes to awl of the above, you my friend, have major issues just like the rest of us) come join me in this awesome challenge!

It sounds like something I would be interested in.  September would give me plenty of time to scare up something for the challenge.  Plus, I don't usually make plans any farther than the next meal.  I think I got this challenge confused with the Scout Knife Challenge.
Sign me up.  Best wishes.  G

A Scout knife is like a Victorinox Recruit.  :D

I didn't get the knives mixed up, just the two challenges.  For the record, does a Scout knife count as a SAK-A-Like?  Good luck with the challenge.  I went back and looked at the previous SAK-A-Like series while I was at it.  Best wishes.  G

IIRC, for past SAK-alike challenges, any knife-based tool that had at least one implement that wasn’t a knife blade counted, as long as it wasn’t actually a SAK.

I'm certain I've done this one before, but I've collected more "alikes" since then.  In fact, it's a sub-collection within my collection.

Welcome, welcome!

This is a Swiza I wouldn't mind getting my hands on except it's only available to our European members.  It's probably better for my wallet anyways.

My Swiza (which will be a primary participant in this challenge) lacks scissors. But everything it does have seems pretty decent.

I used the SMKW house copy of the 108 GAK for the green challenge. If you've never carried a 108 they're a cool platform, and their version is fantastic for the (sub $10) price Don't carry a crappy 91mm knock off. Try something new.

I think this could be an interesting challenge for me.

I have copies from the US (Colonial Swiss Master, mostly), Germany,  the Czech Republic, Italy, and Ireland. Maybe a Japanese one, and tons of the awful Chinese knockoffs.

I'm still a little confused with Swiza. While not legally recognized as true Swiss Army Knives (only Victorinox is recognized as being the official maker of the Swiss Army Knife), they're still made in Switzerland, with a number of ex-Wenger employees being involved.   Been looking a lot at a model with the OH blade, punch and Phillips--that's it. Simple enough to be a "jack of all trades" knife that's only got what I need without weighing me down.

I think Swiza would qualify for the challenge as a SAKalike. Not being made by a supplier for the Swiss Army, while looking and functioning differently seems like good reason to include it in the challenge.  :dunno:

The Swiza definitely qualifies as it's not manufactured by Victorinox.  :tu:

Here's the one  I"m thinking about getting, the SH03.

One-hand blade, awl, and Phillips. Thus, it should just be a single-layer knife.

That's a cool one.

I always thought Vic could do more with the one layer knives. If I could find a 91mm Waiter at a reasonable cost, I'd go for it.

Probably doing it with the Adler/ISC (Schrade) model I did during the first one, but I think I'll give Swiza a second chance (gave away my D04, but the SH03 does not have a true Vic equivalent outside of the now-discontinued Cowboy/Sentinel Plus which is a larger knife). MKM and others now have some decently priced, but still nice SAK clones. There's also a cheap Mossy Oak I keep staring at that looks nice.
