Day 30: Many thanks to AzteCypher for hosting a really fun Challenge, and to a great group of participants that made for a very fast month!

I had the chance to try out two knives that I kept overlooking, and had a good time doing it.   I could carry either one and be in good shape most days.

I don't remember the demo knife I had with a round opener stud on the screwdriver.  I do remember all the blades were stiff.  I also had a civvy model.  DuraTool or whatever they called them.
You know, Barry?  If my Dad hadn't swiped my Cub Scout knife I might not have been in this need to acquire pocky knife mess.  One knife would have done me for years and years.  At least until I found another one.
In fact, I was happy carrying my Victorinox Trooper until I joined up with this group of wackos.  You could set it to music and make a jingle out of it.
I'm a wacko,
You're a wacko,
He's a wacko,
She's a wacko,
Wouldn't you like ,
To be a wacko too?

Im sad to say im Out: My newer Engelberth Strauß Workpants where sadly a bit "Thigher" on the Pocket, also on the Pocket where the Techtool have to put in, so i did yesterday change it to the Victorinox Climber i think (was this the Model whit only Blade, Small Blade, Skizzors, Can and Bottle Opener, Hook, ) as i can carry it whit the Deep Carry Pocket Clip in my "Messure Stick Pocket" ..
I did use the Böker Techtool this Month though, and i will also keep it for when i have to use it in my Backpack but i did loose the Challenge ..

Day 30

Thanks AC thanks awl, lots of great tools, stories and pics everyday, a most enjoyable challenge :hatsoff: :tu:

I rediscovered quite a few sakalikes over the month having originally thought I’d only use the T4 and Armbar, two tools I like a lot for different reasons

The T4 is solid with a good tool selection,  a bit boxy but everything works well

The Armbar disappears in the pocket, less tools but nothing wasted, I like it a lot

Couldn’t do a sakalike challenge without bringing out some of the other genuine army knives out there, so along with the Vietnam war era (1971) Camillus US Army knife, my collection of Aussie and British knives, from 1940’s to 1992, all issued knives….and of course an ADF issued FRED

Day 29

Well, my image hosting site is having server issues so it won't let me upload my pics.      Yes, yes, I know....  :worthless:

So, use your imagination for now until the site comes back up properly.  :D

Picture me using the slide out blade on the Gerber Keystyle to break down a box for recycling.  Not the best deployment but it works.

Then picture me cutting a new watch battery off of the rest of the strip so I can bring my watch back to life.  Even though the scissors are made by Fiskars, I still prefer my Vic scissors.  They just seem to cut that much better.

Well okay, I'm using my imagination now.....   I see someone with a curly moustache cutting a box up.  Cutting.  Cutting.  Cutting.  Cutting.  Oops, he said something naughty....   Cutting.  Cutting.  Finally finished cutting.  Now what is he doing?  There is a little package.  I can't read what is on it.... Batteries.  Those little ones that look like a nickel.  Yes, he is trying to open them with a weird little knife.   Cutting again.  Pulling.  He got one out.  What is he doing?   He's putting one in his mouth..... No, don't do that.  Why is he doing that?  Now he spit it back out and wiped his tongue with his shirt sleeve.  Now his dog wants to try one.  He thinks it is a snack.  Moustache man won't let him have one.  Must have tasted awful.  Faaaaadiiing away.

Day 30

I asked the intrusive (unwanted) AI feature a question of what was the best Bigfoot movie.  It directed me to Youtube and a video called the best 5 bigfoot movies.  I looked at a few little pieces of that just for chuckles.  (the local AI wouldn't let me write chuckles.  It insisted on clarification.)  Pretty soon I won't have to write anything at all.  The AI can take a digital challenge for me and write it up.  Post a photo, an annoying report, and sign it with a G and a smiley face.  (The Victorinox Spartan is always at your side and ready to spring to your aid to meet any challenge.)
Now I ask you.... is that really better than the real IMR post?  Something like this....  My Spartan smells funny since I left it overnight in coffee.  I think I might need to soak it in hair tonic to kill the stink.  Oh yeah, it has a bent blade where some moron tried to pry something.  I will try to kink it back in line.  Might have to wash my hands afterward.  Ick.
I used to be able to turn off the AI, but it got tough with me and won't let me now.  I will post one more photo of the rather heavy Ruff Rida next to a very much lighter Wenger.  The Wenger smells like hair tonic too.  I will say that the Rough Rider is made from the finest cutlery steel and choice materials to ensure long life and years of service.  Always ready at your side to meet any obstacle.
Best wishes.

Used Aitor canopener (combo) to tighten cabinet door hinge screws.
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I gotta say i liked to use T4, Armbar, K502X and Aitor but those 2 clones are bad to use daily since quality isnt best and only tools on those what are usable is blades but i did try to use tools on those 2 clones and they kinda did job but it could be worse to use

Huge thanks to everybody who participated this challenge, it was great to see how everyone used diffrent kind tools to do job.

Day 30

 :woohoo:

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The four I consider the best of the  a-likes.

Scout knifes seem to be the winners, and the CAMILLUS crossout was definitely the best for the month.

The CASE Scout Jr is nice and pretty, yet a tad small. But must say the AWL is sharp as any blade and impressed me with its functions.

The OZARKs are the most alike, right down to the blade steel.  IIRC these were $5 originally and price was lowered to $2.50 - $3 depending on the store.  I was impressed at $5, but acquired several more when discounted.   Made good gifts to the less than knife savvy person.  In fact one did two contracts teaching English in Spain (2years) and know is in third year of law school in the Northeast😎.  I taught her how to maintain the blades edge using bottom of  ceramic coffee cup.

Been fun, great fellow contributors, good pictures and amazing stories shared this month.

First, a few thoughts straight outta left field. Since I said "left field," I do suppose it's fitting that I predict the Tigers' 2025 season will end tomorrow. Second, Nate is really making me wish I could make a run to Algo Especial! (That's a little grocery store in Mexicantown, Detroit.) And third, the cookie factory is now trying to goad me into purchasing autographed photos of Maureen McCormick and Dawn Wells. So I guess the QOTD is: Ginger or Mary Ann?

Okay, I'll get back on track...

Day 30

Back on Day 3, I had this to say:

My preliminary assessment is that you'd have to really like the shape, the sorta rubbery scales, and/or the supposed dishwasher safety to justify such a price premium.
That is my assessment of the Swiza. I see it as very much a niche product. Most knife-based multi users are unlikely to find the price premium to be justified. However, it is decidedly different, and I'm happy to have it in my collection.

The Gerber Armbar Scout is conditionally recommended. If you feel that screwdrivers are a crucial multi component, it's not for you. But the tools that are included are decent at worst. I just hope the egregiously bad pocket clip is removable. Both the Armbar Scout and the Swiza D04 were acquired in trade with BPRoberts. :hatsoff:

And finally, we have the Gerber Curve. I wish someone had thought to include a stop for the clip. That's the only real knock I have. If your primary multi use is cutting and turning screws, the Curve is a fairly unobtrusive keychain tool that can fly under the radar without much difficulty. Better yet, even though it's discontinued, I found packaged examples on eBay for less than $20 just before this was posted. Recommended. :hatsoff: to whoever put it in the surprise box!

Oh, and a photo would help...

This was a fun challenge, with a great variety of tools. Thanks to awl who patricipated, and a special thanks to AzteCypher for hosting. I'll soon be off to request the badge, and I'll see some of you in next month's fixed-blade challenge!

So you are getting TV sit-com stars?  I have been getting Reba lately.  Yes, that Reba.  Nothing said about autographed photos.  These are Bikni photos or flaunting her HUGE size.  Sometimes one and sometimes the other.
Reba seems like a nice gal, I suppose.  Her accent is something I can understand.  She also has lots of good points.  Money for one.... and..... I guess maybe a nice house and car.  And money.  I might not look as good in a Bikni as her, but I can sing better.
The AI fiend changed 'accent' into 'accident'.  Gotta watch that stuff.  It might change a word like 'promotion', or 'proposition' into something dangerous like 'proposal' and I could find myself living in Nashville with a 70-year-old red head.  Things could be worse.  At least she has lots of .... you know.
I wonder how she feels about HDPE adjustable manhole inserts?  They really are the wave of the future for durable, sustainable waste and drain openings.
Best wishes.  G

How's the quality? Been looking at cheaper rigging knives, as I need the spike often--but the vast majority of my "spikes" are military antiques (mostly Canadian and English) or high-end (Myerchin).  I want something fairly inexpensive to throw in my toolboxes.

Day 27:

The JR Moon Big Dipper hasn't been made in decades. They were some of my first pencils (some still have my name written on them from my kindergarten days) , and I suspect they were old stock at the stationery store from which they came in the early '00s.

I know there's a couple companies still making pencils in the US, but forgot the names. I like fairly thick pencils. Stronger leads and easier for me to hold.

Sears Craftsman 9560. Has the remnants of the pre-'60s logo. I'm guessing late '50s due to celluloid handles.

Best I can tell, this is an Ulster-produced example.

Note: repurposed an old photo since the original Day 28 photo was terrible.

Zippo Pocket Knife

HS was my Granddad's initials, so I bought this knife for him originally, and I later inherited it after his passing.

H&S Machine is a fairly small operation (10 employees) in Lawrence, MA. They were founded in 1948, so it means the knife was made in 1973 going by the "25th Anniversary" marking. No connection to it, but I liked the tools on the handle when I bought it for my Granddad. I also have one for American LaFrance.

Day 30:

I have no idea. It has an unintelligible logo ("P" in a diamond) and "STAINLESS JAPAN" as a tang stamp. Tools--pen blade and file/screwdriver/bottle opener (seems like a common tool on many small Japanese knives of the era!).

One of the few advertising knives from my own backyard, this one was a giveaway from Richlands National Bank in the '70s. I bought it for like $2 at an antique store by my house about a year ago.  I think they were bought and sold a couple of times, and the location, I think now houses a Wells Fargo.  My folks never banked with them.

Enameled gold-tone logo. Probably brass. I'd really be curious if it was gold...

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I used it to tighten up my old desk scissors--1930s Shapleigh Hardware 7-inch, chrome-plated.

Gotta admit, this 30 day challenge included some I either never used in the first one (could swore I've done two of these...), or never had. Gotta admit, good quality, inexpensive secondhand knives  are something I NEVER pass on.

Rough Ryder Marlin Spike Knives are pretty decent for under $20 each.

Or, for about $25 a piece you can get the solid one-piece stainless steel Myerchin spikes, and they will probably outlive you.

Day 30

Fun fact, for the price of the JOTS you could outfit yourself with a Pioneer, a Classic SD, and a Wave+ and have about 10 bucks left over to get a Jarritos (or other glass bottle soda of your choice) and at least a rice and beans plate. Oh, sorry, that's at the retail price, which is almost impossible to get. If you pay Ebay prices you could probably upgrade yourself to a Farmer X and a Minichamp. Or dinner for two.

I think this is a beautiful knife. I know a lot of people complain about the Delrin on a premium knife, but I think it's the right style. The hex wrench is cool, even if I didn't use it. But at the end of the day the Pioneer is more practical (with the awl and extra screwdriver), cheaper, and awlso cool (you can even get your BYSAK if you want). I don't regret buying it and I've got no complaints about the function, but it's not a knife I'm ever likely to recommend to anyone other than a niche collector.

Cleaning it up and putting it back in the drawer for next time I need a "designer" knife to show off somewhere.

Thanks for hosting, AC. Hopefully I'll see some of you over in fixie land tomorrow.

Day 30

Final thoughts.

The Gerber Armbar was both too much and not enough for me.

On the one hand, the blade worked well and had the advantage over a SAK of having a lock that’s easily disengaged and a blade that can be safely opened without worrying about the backspring.  The scissors did the job, and theyre a must for me.

But the lack of a screwdriver and openers was a negative.

So if this was a dedicated folder like a slipjoint the blade would have been fine, but the bottle opener that was included seemed to be lacking in utility without a screwdriver tip.    It seemed extraneous for the most part.   Meanwhile it didn’t have more useful implements.

I don’t think I will be carrying this much unless I am just looking for a utilitarian blade, for cutting cardboard or something.

Congratulations to awl for another successful challenge.

Day 30

These weren’t the only tools I carried for this challenge, but found myself falling into a pattern by the end.

From left to right:

Work - LionSteel Jack 2 - High quality, unobtrusive appearance, and ease of carry made it a favorite here.  The only real negative is the limited toolset.

Football practices and games - LM Free T2 - In previous posts, I’ve detailed what I feel are a number of questionable design choices on the T2.  However, having sturdy, locking flathead and 3D Phillips drivers that I wasn’t afraid to torque with my full strength (and a comfortable enough handle that I could do this without inflicting pain on my hand) made it a good choice for this application.

Scouts & weekends - MKM Malga 6 - In spite of the questionable utility of some implements (blunt awl; tiny fork), the M390 blade cuts like a laser.  Textured orange G10 scales meant a good grip even when wet, and would have made it easier to find if dropped or lost.  I also made use of the flathead screwdriver a few times.  Though I didn’t use the can opener or corkscrew during this challenge, I felt better prepared for having them along.

Thanks to awl for a fun challenge, and a special thank you to AC for hosting!

Day 30

Thanks to awl for joining me on this fun challenge.  I like this challenge because I put into rotation knives that I sometimes forget I have.  There are definitely some badly designed/executed SAK-A-Likes (I'm looking at you Quirky Switch multitool) and others that with a bit more work could've been better/less frustrating (Gerber Bear Grylls).  But there are some good classic and contemporary ones out there.

These were my favorite ones to carry though I don't think I carried the Colonial Scout knife now that I think about it.  Each have their strength and weaknesses but they awl served their intended purposes well.

If you don't have the badge yet, don't forget to request it.  It's on page 5 of the available awards pages, towards the bottom of the page.

Looking forward to seeing some of y'awl on the Fixed Blade Challenge tomorrow!

Day 30
Ruike M31 opened some hot sauce.

Of all my SAK-a-Likes , I really like the Ruike, with the Boker being very similar if not identical.

The one that I found myself enjoying more than expected was the Ruike S31.  The blade, scissor, bottle opener all work as expected.  I was uncertain about how useful the hook cutter was, until I started experimenting with it. It actually works well for cutting open chips or other packaging , even poly and bubble wrap.
