Day 9

Pumpkin is never great at these kinds of pics, but this one came out pretty well.

Nessmuk's quote on tourists and campfires:

Quote
The wood was thrown on endwise, crosswise, or any way, so that it would burn, precisely as a crowd of boys make a bonfire on the village green. The object being, apparently, to get rid of the wood in the shortest possible time.

In my experience, that's pretty accurate.

Good to see some more Maxpedition entries along with the fine dogs and the only good-luck black cat I know of.  Pumpkin.  I couldn't let summer go by without picking up some fresh local produce.  I had summer squash, sweet corn, and home-made cole slaw today.  Yummilicious.  I got my green beans ready for an early morning cooking tomorrow.  I try to do things requiring cooking early in the day to minimize the heat build up in the house.  No A/C here friends.
Best wishes.  G

Day 8
Rummage, organize and repack the Jeep's toolbox.

For knife content, here's a Camillus and a Gerber saw that usually live in this thing along with an Etool and a machete
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.
But for now I'm just a lost jack of trades with neither mastery nor home. ~NoaIsumi

Day 10 - might as well do day 10 while at it. I had this for a long time but it didn't tick my boxes for using as home edc but at work it's a perfect size pliers for those fiddly stuff. Don't use it very often but when I do.. I'm really happy to have it! And the Phillipsdriver have fixed loose door handles more times than I can count. It's like no one else here at work are bothered by them  :viking:

Day 10

Opinel with a weedwacker.  I mentioned the display of Stihl promo knives and multi tools before.  I happened to see the two counter displays for these things.  There were only a couple of empty slots on them before, but yestiddy they were practically empty.  Who knew cheap, largely useless, overpriced gas station type knives with Stihl written on the sides would be popular?  I wonder sometimes if our friends in the UK or other places understand the relatively recent US term 'gas station knife'?
The gas station near W-Mart where I usually stop had a CASE display.  I say had, because last visit I notice the display had been moved or maybe stolen.  Many of the convenience stores had CASE displays along with the local ACE hardware.  Every one of them had break-ins and the displays were looted.  The CASE cabinets were a magnet for criminals.  Next time, I will ask someone what happened to the display at my local station.
Anyway, gas station knife, refers to the cheap impulse buy knives at the cash register.  Generally, in a plastic bucket.   Priced for three dollars or so, take your pick.  Junk.  Once upon a time any little store had a cardboard display with dollar pocket knives.  Imperial.  Colonial.  Jackmaster.  Kids would beg Mama for one of them and she would sternly say, "No."  Then the disappointed youngster could get his own Barlow knife from Bobby Ray Hauser at school instead.  Bobby Ray probably found the rusty relic, and could be convinced to sell the precious thing for 27 cents, a pack of bubble gum, and a wrinkled Batman comic book.  When you took the treasure home, you had to make sure Mom didn't see it.  So began the first of many deceptions that you played on the one person who really did care for you.
Best wishes.  G

Day 10

Thanks for the memories of gas station knives, Gary! I have been tempted by them many times. I remember displays of Barlow knives behind the counter of my favorite small town general store in the '60s. Same store sometimes had a used shotgun, .22 rifle or maybe a .22 revolver for sale. And you could buy just a few rounds of ammo if you couldn't afford a whole box.

For today's pic, here is a tomahawk that was hand forged from a piece of Ford truck upper control arm.

Yes, I miss the days of being able to go in a hardware store and buy just a handful of something you needed.  You didn't need to buy a pack of sandpaper or a plastic box of screws.  You told the man what you wanted and he would grab some loose screws or nails for a little pocket change.  If you only needed one, you probably got it for free.  Fasteners, washers, O-rings, cotter pins, etc. were all available loose.  Buy window screen or rope off a roll by the foot.  Glass panes for windows, one at a time.
I like the axe.  That might be the first home-made tool on this thread?  Best wishes.  G

The Boss Lady and I were out and about in her car recently and I found out that she didn't have a suitable knife/fork/spoon option for our lakeside pasta dinner.
I'm pretty pleased with this setup.
Separates into 2 pieces.
Knife/spoon and fork/opener.

After I put one in her glove box she decides to get a different set that rattles inside a plastic box.

I'm taking my ball and going home.
Addicted to sharp pointy things.

Nice one Pit. I'll try to remember a Spork or Hobo knife picture for tomorrow.

Day 10
The Opinel Gardening set comes in a nice wooden box.  You get a No12 folding saw, a No8 spearpoint with tapered handle that they call the garden knife, and a No8 Pruning and grafting knife.  Buying the set is cheaper than buying them individually and is a great way to start your Opi collection.

Day 10 (late)

Got this today. Can't resist the low price. It's $80, it had been $100 for a while.

Kind of busy at work and not much time for hobbies.

Day 11 - packing up for a weekend away frome home. Decided to bring this combo, it's basic but still pack a good punch I think. No overlap other than the tweezers, the SAK is a mod I did years ago and still use for long periods of time. Don't show in the picture but it has plus scales

Day 11

I haven't posted a Hobo Knife in quite a while.  I brushed the dust off mine.  Sheath is marked 'Mitsubishi'.  Blade stamp is for 'Gutmann Cutlery'.  Gutmann made knives in Solingen but also was an importer here.  The knife is Japanese, of course.  Young IMR enjoyed playing with it some.  That was about all it was good for.  I refuse to carry a folder in a belt sheath, and this monstrosity might be largely responsible for that phobia.
Best wishes.  G
