Ground work
on: June 16, 2025, 07:51:16 PM
The Boss Lady decided that she'd put up a couple bird feeder poles, in the back yard. Out ground is HARD clay and rocks so it took her a while to hammer them in.
One came out fairly straight while the other has a noticeable right lean to it   I went out to help straighten it up and saw that she'd bent up one of the stabilizer stakes.  I figured the easiest way to fix it was to seat the bent stake further into the ground.  Easier said than done given the makeup of our ground.  SO, I went out and picked up this ugly tool.  It's a reinvisioned tea crate hammer made from cast iron.

This should make short work out of the job.

I have one that looks darn near identical--grip is orange. Absolutely sucks as an axe, but for prying and hammering (as intended), it works fine. It's also so soft, it won't chip.

Well, the axe is gonna be used on the ground.

I've got a bunch of machetes to cut most anything else.

Good for the Boss Lady.  Feed them birds.  I haven't seen one of those hammers in a while.  Never knew what they were called.  Best wishes.  G

I had forgotten what they were called, Gary.  I had to try to find them at the Northern Tool store and the sales clerk hadn't ever seen one and hadn't even heard of it.   While looking for it on their website the Google lens thing kicked in and told me what it was.

I remember those.  Dad had one that he got from grand-pa.  Haven't seen one in years.  I always thought it looked like some sort of medieval weapon.

That looks a lot nicer than mine- I have one with a yellow painted wood handle. They have been discussed here a fair bit in the past under the name Box Tool or Ugly Tool.

I love them!  Very handy and they take (and give!) a pounding!
