Neat Little EDC option
on: February 19, 2009, 09:34:50 AM
Well we all know that pepper spray is illegal to carry on yourself (well for where I live it is)

So...I was browsing a site and came across this nifty lil thing...
http://www.legear.com.au/DYEWitness-Criminal-Identifier-Personal-Defender-p/dyewitness.htm

Apparently it is legal for the poms as well as us Aussies

I might get one...the price is very very appealing

Opens up some other possibilities. Where pepper spray is legal, add it to this product. You get some stopping power and the ability to identify the bad guys.

Now, if you really want to screw with the bad guys, add dye to the expanding foam used for sealing around window and door jambs. Hard to hurt you if they gotta be busy clawing the stuff off their face to breath.  >:D

Sorry gang.

Looks like this may come under the Firearms Act list of Prohibited weapons:

"Section 5 (1) (b) any weapon of whatever description designed or adapted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing.

You're probably right, but does it actually classify as a weapon? As it shouldn't cause any harm to the attacker, mearly make their life difficult?

What about a small can of spray paint? I mean, if it wasn't specifically designed as a defensive weapon it might fit the bill. Just carry around some art supplies like one small brush, or an old hinge to paint. Then one could argue there was nothing premeditated, that you just used what was at hand to defend yourself.

Using that argument then things like CS, Pava etc would be legal as they too will not cause any harm to the attacker, mearly make their life difficult  :P

I didn't know if they were covered under that bit of legislation or another, i still wouldn't see it as a weapon though but my opinion doesn't count in such matters :D

Yes, I actually hold a Section 5 Firearms Certificate with an annual refresher (I teach it as well) for carrying CS, so before anyone else mentions it....No a Copper is not exempt  :police: :P

Is that just for on duty or does it cover off duty too? (Sorry if any one finds this dull and boring but i don't so :P :D )

HUUUUUUUGE Grey area.

Theoretically I am covered Off duty.  A recent Home Office circular even confirmed this for me recently.  The argument would be

1 - Travelling to a different Parade station so Transportation of CS in my vehicle to home etc would be viewed as OK
2 - If I intervene in something off duty I am without PPE (Personal protective equipment) therefore I am only left with certain "Empty hand" tactics that include deadly force.  If CS is carried I may be using a lesser force to achieve the same result.

However, it would be a brave force that formally announces this :-\

Interesting.... is it possible for a "civilian" to get a license? Not that i want/need one I'm just intrigued as i know shotgun licenses aren't hugely difficult to obtain (with a good reason obviously), but i guess this is a different kettle of fish?

I would doubt it very much.....a shotgun licence is a VERY different things to a Firearms Certificate.

Think Slipjoint compared to Flik-Gravity-locking-10" blade of death.  Thats the difference in law we are talking here  ;)

Flash...I know we live in different parts of the world, but I can not imagine doing out jobs without guns, going off-duty in your own jurisdiction were you run into people who you've arrested (and they do not like you) while being unarmed.  I have the up-most respect for you continuing to do your job under such restrictions.

I normally come up with glib responses to compliments but I will only say "Cheers" for this one. :police:

I agree with cgk, but if it's one thing I've learned, it's that when you are on duty, folks see the uniform, not you.  I have encountered many folks off duty that never knew who I was, despite having encountered them professionally in the past.  For anyone who wonders how Superman can put on some glasses and pass unnoticed, well it can be done.

Flash- do police officers still live in certain sections of the city?  My mother used to tell me about certain neighborhoods that were reserved for coppers- when she got her first car she was rear ended by a tuck on her way home and ended up in the yard of a cop's house, and several officers were out in their yards doing yardwork and witnessed the accident!

Def,

We live anywhere and everywhere.

True story, on my honeymoon on the plane journey home I met a family I had "dealt" with:

Daughter - arrested for theft
Mother - arrested for handling the stuff her daughter stole
Son - Arrested for affray when I arrested his mother and sister for the above.  :ahhh

Lets just say the return flight was "interesting"  :D

Def,

True story-(by the way "true story" is usually code for B.S.) I arrested a guy for robbery, a week later he was in line at a fastfood restaurant telling his buddy about his arrest....I was in line behind.  So yes I went unrecognized.  I have had many others that did recognize me.  Even though I serve in a community of about 65,000 we usually deal with the same sorts so after 15 years I find I am recognized much more often.

In my city, it's not uncommon to find yourself bumping into all kinds of people you know, who know you, the brother of someone you know, or the cousin who knows you.  It really isn't a big city at all.  In fact, a woman I met who works at my (day job) boss' other company is a woman I was watching very closely one night at the bar I work at because she and her husband were fighting.

In all my years of working the jobs I did in Toronto, there were only two incidents in which I ran into someone I knew "professionally.  One was an inmate who consistently threatened many of the screws, so I gave him my home address and told him he wasn't man enough to hunt me down when he got out.  I know that sounds stupid, but out of the thousands of inmates I dealt with (and hundreds I gave my address to- I was young and reckless!) this was the only one to ever to come after me.  Last I saw him, he was hobbling away as fast as he could after I stuck his knife in his leg and opened the door to my apartment to let the dog have a go at him!  :D

The other was a guy I arrested at my day job, roughed up a bit after he decided to resist arrest and pick my pocket at the same time.  Then, a few days later when I went back to work at the jail, guess who just happened to be on my floor?  Of course he didn't recognize me, so that was good!

Most of the time though I walk right by people I deal with in uniform and they have no idea who I am.  I never take my eyes off them though- I'm not nearly as tough as I was when I was a kid!
